What to expect from Adidas Ultra Boost
My expectations were certainly high. I had heard lots of good things about this running shoe from others, so in my case it was not the best starting point. I think the tendency is that when you hear a lot of good things about a running shoe and then test it yourself for the first time, the risk of being disappointed is huge.
I wasn’t disappointed, let’s be honest, but on the other hand, it wasn’t a running shoe that could pull me backwards into the sky. It’s a shoe that I think is a little above average. But Adidas Ultra Boost definitely has some advantages that you should not overlook, and there are some things that are really cool about this running or leisure shoe.
Yes, I write both running and leisure, because this shoe is a shoe that in my world could definitely also be used as a pair of cool sneakers that your feet will love you for wearing. And they will, partly because this running or leisure shoe is:
– Ultra Light (feel)
– Ultra Flexible
– Ultra stylish
The fact that the lightness of the shoe is one of the first things that jumps out at you is a little strange. Because if you look at the data on the shoe, it is light, but it’s not the lightest in its class. But I still think it feels nice and light.
The flexibility of the shoe is nothing short of amazing – I really get the feeling that when I step into this running shoe, it follows my foot and its movements. And it doesn’t matter if it’s running or walking.
It’s a matter of taste whether you think the shoe is nice/cool/cool – but I like it, and think it can easily go with a pair of jeans or knickers in the summer. And when I pamper my feet at the same time, I’m even happier.
I was happy after the first ride in Adidas Boost
I was excited about this running shoe after my first run in the shoe (as I was after numbers 2 and 3) but let me put it this way, my first run in the shoe quickly revealed to me that it is not a shoe I would run 42 kilometers in with my good will. Whether I would do it anyway to get the good combination of lightness and agility, I wouldn’t put my head on the block on that.
My point is that I think – and this is my opinion – that it is a running shoe that for me is suitable for volume training, but I would not let the trips exceed 10-12 kilometers. It is highly individual what and how much your feet and body can generally tolerate, but I have found that my maximum distance in Adidas Ultra boost is around 16-18-20 km. As previously written, I can easily see myself using it on a marathon where I want speed in my legs, because it has a nice lightness and flexibility that does something to my feet.
There are different Adidas Boost models
You may have wondered a bit. And I can promise you this. You’re not the only one. When you hear people talk about Adidas Boost, they talk about the shoe in the singular and as if there is only this one model. But that’s not the truth. Adidas Boost is actually available in 4 different versions at the time of writing.
Adidas UltraBoost – It’s the one most people know. The regular Neutrail Adidas Boost running shoe. The super flexible, soft and very forgiving Boost model.
Adidas UltraBoost Laceless – It probably goes without saying. Based on the classic Adidas UltraBoost, this “lace-free” version has been created. This is to create more flexibility, lightness and agility.
Adidas UltraBoost X – This model is optimized towards the female foot. The instep has been adapted to better fit the female last and fit. The regular Adidas UltraBoost can be a bit too wide.
Adidas UltraBoost ST – Adidas is trying to create more stability in the shoe with their UltraBoost ST model. This is done by adding double Boost in the shoe

Overall impression of the Adidas Ultra Boost
My overall impression is not quite if we look in the direction of a full-blown running shoe. I think the trend from Adidas’ casual and sneaker shoes is too pervasive. I would call it an 85/15 in the running shoe’s favor.
But that’s not to say (also written just above here) that it’s not a good running shoe, because I think it is. It’s a good running shoe for the person who runs between 5 and 20 kilometers, and maybe enjoys running a half marathon once in a while.
These types of runners will get a lot out of this Adidas Ultra Boost running shoe as it is incredibly comfortable and flexible, and offers plenty of softness and cushioning in its construction. So many different types of runners are catered for in this shoe. But more about the construction of the shoe further down in the running shoe review

Choose your size in Adidas Ultra Boost
I don’t think this running shoe stands out from the crowd, it is exactly the same size I have always chosen in Adidas (43 1/3) and perhaps you should be aware that it may seem a little bit wide in the forefoot.
If you’re unsure of your size in Adidas Ultra Boost, check out our size calculator – it can help you figure out your size.
Men’s sizes: 39 1/3 – 49 1/3
Women’s sizes: 36 – 41 1/3

The magic is (also) in the upper of the UltraBoost
Many people talk about the innovative sole on the Adidas UltraBoost, and it’s the best sole ever from Adidas. That’s absolutely correct. It’s a stroke of genius. Personally, it’s not just one element that makes a good running shoe for me. But fortunately, the upper of the Adidas UltraBoost is ALSO very special to me.
The upper is developed in a deliciously soft material that Adidas calls PrimeKnit. It’s this ultra soft and flexible material that just follows your foot and gives you the feeling of running in a sock. It’s super breathable so your feet are allowed to breathe through the material, thereby achieving really good conditions inside the shoe. Unfortunately, the upper is also quite fragile. As mentioned earlier, it’s one of the prices you pay for a soft and supple upper of this caliber, so it’s not as durable as a “regular” upper.
Adidas UltraBoost is the ideal summer running shoe for me. Light, fresh, flexible and breathable. By the way, I’ve run with bare toes in the shoe, which I could easily do.
I’m going to say something now that none of the manufacturers will be happy about. But I have stated in several of my other reviews that I am a huge fan of Nike’s FlyKnit upper because it is so soft, comfortable and follows my foot in a sublime way. I can’t help but highlight the many similarities between Nike Flyknit and Adidas PrimeKnit. Both tops are unique and have so many similarities.

What is Boost from Adidas
You’ve probably discovered that Boost is the material placed in the midsole of the shoe. But what you may not know is that Adidas has been using Boost in their range of running shoes for a long time. However, they have not succeeded in creating a running shoe with a midsole made entirely of Boost material. Not until now, and that is the Adidas UltraBoost.
In the past, you had to combine the unique Boost material with the regular EVA midsole material to make it all come together. But that’s no longer the case. Now you’re flying on Boost material alone. And that in itself is a crazy experience. I think it’s great to run on. Not 42 kilometers. But if I’m going for 5-7 or 10 kilometers, then UltraBoost from Adidas is the obvious choice.
The Boost material is of course much more complicated than that, but to explain it briefly and precisely, it is a bunch of small, flexible plastic bubbles that could easily resemble a flamingo in appearance. As I said, it is much more than that. There are many years of research behind this Boost invention.

The lacing system is nothing special.
It’s a matter of taste and that’s why you get my honest opinion about it. It’s possible that you have a different opinion. But if I were to make a comparison with the other huge player on the market, namely Nike. I think the lacing system that the UltraBoost has in the version I tested is both “not so pretty” and does not have the optimal effect. Not that the shoe fits poorly or is otherwise annoying. But if I compare it with, for example, Nike’s same system, the Adidas version seems both heavy and clumsy..
Of course, I can’t say for sure that it’s exactly the same thing, but it definitely looks like two products with the same purpose. To give the foot the support it needs. Both systems are attached to the outsole and are based on the lacing system on the shoe.

The outsole is deceiving, but on the positive side
When you first look at the outsole of the Adidas UltraBoost, you have no doubt that it is not for rough surfaces. And the upper can’t stand up to that either. But the sole looks very sparse, and doesn’t seem to have much grip. But I have to admit that it surprised me in a positive way..
The outsole is built with help from Continental and you have to say they know their stuff. There is plenty of and very solid grip on almost all hard surfaces. And it doesn’t matter if it’s wet or dry.

Analysis Part 1: Who can use Adidas Ultra Boost
Running style
Ultra Boost is for the neutral runner. And let me point out that it is with a thick line under neutral, because I think, as mentioned earlier, that the shoe will seem a little too soft. And that may be fine for a neutral runner, but if you have very, very severe overpronation, I think this shoe is a little dangerous.
Fit
Soft, light and flexible. That’s just what this running shoe is made of. The PrimeKnit upper that Adidas has chosen to use in this Ultra Boost is unique in its way of wrapping around the foot, giving you a really good fit.
In fine clothes
The solid surface. This is definitely a running shoe I would recommend that you only use on asphalt, and as a last resort on firm gravel paths. The soft and unique upper means that it is not particularly resistant to branches, stones and other hard and sharp things. So if you are going for a walk in a little more challenging terrain or on a definite trail, choose another running shoe in your closet. This one simply cannot handle it.
Price level
1400,- is the recommended retail price. It is relatively expensive for a running shoe of this caliber if I have to judge it. Can you name running shoes where you get something more for your money by spending 1400,-? The natural alternatives to Adidas Ultra Boost, such as Nike Pegasus and Asisc Nimbus, I think offer much more for the price.
Weight
Men’s weight: 312 grams in size 43
Women’s weight: 283 grams in size 39
Type of shoe
Running shoes and casual shoes. Although it is of course very much a shoe for running, I could easily wear this shoe as a cool pair of sneakers with jeans or knickers. Definitely.
Durability
It is on this parameter that the Adidas Ultra Boost loses a bit. It is a super cool running shoe to have on your feet, but it is also a running shoe whose materials are on the fragile side.
Drop
10mm. A relatively high drop. But I don’t really think it’s a feature I notice – that is, I can feel it when I’m out. It’s not that I think it’s too high.

Analysis part 2: Structure
Outsole
Durable, and with a good elastic effect that adapts well to the surface.
Midsole
Adidas Boost technology in the midsole ensures that you get a really nice take-off and a really nice landing. What sets Boost cushioning apart from others is that it is really good at returning some of its energy to the runner, so you get a better take-off when you run.
Heel
I don’t think I’ve noticed any flaws in the heel, so I have to conclude that it’s a well-supported heel section that manages to keep the foot in place as it should.

Middle
The Torsion system from Adidas is integrated into the sole, giving you both support and stability in the midsole.
Forefoot
Here you get help from the new midsole, you get extra help with the landings when you have to take your steps.
Upper part
PrimeKnit. The lightweight woven upper that is completely seamless. Super soft and flexible, and I definitely think the upper is one of the better ones I’ve tried. It just fits like that.
Men’s and Women’s Adidas Ultra Boost
A running shoe that is available for both men and women. There is of course a difference in the construction, understood in the sense that more material is used for the men’s running shoe, and therefore it is heavier in the larger sizes. But the shoe has the same drop of 10mm whether it is for men or women.
Alternatives to Ultra Boost
If we have to evaluate based on running style alone, there are alternatives such as Asics Nimbus, New balance 1080 or Saucony Kinvara.
But I think it would be more accurate to say that this running shoe is between the aforementioned and other alternatives such as Nike Free or Nike Lunartempo.
Summary
I like this running shoe. I think it fits perfectly and it has a nice lightness. But I don’t think it will be my favorite when we talk about neutral running shoes. I think it sits too much between 2 seats. The seats I choose to call “regular neutral running shoes” and “natural running running shoes”. I don’t think the shoe meets my requirements as being “regular neutral running shoes”
