Asics Nimbus 22 has landed – what can you expect

No one is better than their last match. And before is better than their last release. But it is fortunate that Asics almost every single time delivers the correct product when they launch a new version of their top model Asics Gel Nimbus. It is impressively rare that they have shot wide of the target.

Now the time has come for the (once again) very popular Asics Nimbus 21 to be replaced by the Asics Nimbus 22. And as always, it is something of a legacy that the new one has to carry on. The Asics Gel Nimbus 21 has really been a “hard hitter” and a customer favorite. But therefore it could well be that the Asics Nimbus 22 can carry on that legacy, who knows?

There are of course changes in the new Asics Nimbus 22, because otherwise it would be crazy to change the version number of the shoe if you didn’t change anything anyway. Let’s just say that right away. Asics Nimbus 22 can “probably” lift the legacy of Asics Nimbus 21. There are actually a few rather interesting updates in the shoe that you as a runner will really enjoy.

The upper on the Asics Nimbus 22 has, among other things, been updated. A slightly different material has been used for the upper of the shoe, resulting in an upper on the Nimbus 22 that is both softer and gives your feet a much better chance to breathe and get rid of heat..
If you take a look at the shoe, you will notice that the plastic support that was on the outside of the shoe/heel on your Asics Nimbus 21 is no longer found on the Nimbus 22. This is because it has been moved “into the heel”. This gives you a tiny bit more stability in the heel.

The soles of the Asics Nimbus 22 have really gotten a fantastic boost..
The insole in the shoe has become a little smoother and a little softer. The outsole has become more flexible in its expression, as it has been equipped with more grooves, and some of them are also more constant and deep. This gives the shoe a different and smoother flex when you take your steps.

Last but certainly not least. The already fantastic FlyteFoam midsole has been given a boost. 2mm extra foam has been added to the midsole. This gives you more softness and generally just a more enjoyable experience with the shoe. You had no doubt before the Asics Nimbus 22 that this model was a top model, but with this launch you have just been confirmed in that opinion..

What to expect from the Asics Nimbus 21

Can you be so bold as to call it a belated Christmas present? At the time of writing, the Asics Nimbus 21 will be launched in early/mid January 2019. That is, approximately 14 days after Christmas..
As a running nerd, you look forward to shoe launches like this just as much as you do to Christmas presents on December 24th, almost. But that always makes it a little special when we talk about series or models that really have a hold on people. And you have to say that Asics Nimbus has that. And it has for many years..

But it is always with a certain skepticism that you look at a new shoe of that caliber. Because it now lives up to the usual high standard. And high standard, it must be said, Asics Nimbus has maintained through all 20 previous versions. But now it is the turn of Asics Nimbus 21. Does it live up to the standard? Will it be lower, or will it be even higher.
Of course, it can be difficult to generalize. Because with so many years behind us, the Asics Nimbus has had both ups and downs for the individual runner. So of course we are comparing it mostly to the 2 previous versions, the Asics Nimbus 19 and the Asics Nimbus 20.
We have a clear feeling that most runners have been very satisfied with the 2 shoe versions of Asics Nimbus for a long time, so it is a tough field that Asics Nimbus 21 has to compete with.

But what can the Asics Nimbus 21 do? Can it do anything?

Yes, it can to a certain extent. Asics has once again tinkered with some pretty significant things in the shoe. And once again it has been done with great success. They have once again managed to elevate some elements in the Asics shoe that you would not have thought possible otherwise. Of course, we know that we live in a world in full motion where new development opportunities are constantly arising. But it is funny that people keep writing that the Asics Nimbus cannot get better now. But it can. And that is due to the rapid development of various technologies.

A tiny minus has turned into a plus

If I had to make any criticisms about the Asics Nimbus 20, it would be the forefoot and its ability to accommodate your feet and toes. It was a bit tight, and maybe too tight. We (or Asics) are changing that in the Asics Nimbus 21. That is one of the major changes. There is more room for your toes in the forefoot, and that increases comfort considerably.

An Asics Nimbus brand has been optimized – again

The upper has also been given a makeover in this update to the Asics Nimbus 21. A new type of mesh has been used. The so-called jacquard mesh that Asics also uses in other of their running shoes. This type of mesh is both lighter, more flexible and your feet breathe better through it. In fact, the upper is built up of both 3D print (stability in the upper) and then 2 layers of jacquard mesh. A very light combination of an upper that provides optimal support for your feet.

The heart of the Asics Nimbus 21 beats faster now

If you have to talk about the heart of a running shoe, for me it is definitely the midsole. This is where the magic happens. This is where the shoe can make a difference. The midsole is where you create the optimal comfort and the best shock absorption.
Asics Nimbus 21 has a 2-part midsole. Or perhaps you should rather call it a 2-layer. Because there are 2 different materials that are optimized for different things, which are placed on top of each other in Asics Nimbus 21. The lower part of the midsole is Asics FlyteFoam Lyte. A constantly springy midsole, which quite simply creates a super foundation. On top of this, Asics FlyteFoam Propel has been added. A midsole material that is optimized to absorb. To expand and work best with hard impacts. That is, every time you land after a step. At the same time, the entire length of the shoe with the midsole is placed correctly according to where you have the hardest shocks and impacts.

Asics Nimbus 21 has many old virtues

Asics Nimbus 21 is still one, or perhaps the best neutral running shoe on the market when it comes to long distance runs. But don’t let that fool you anymore. There was a time when Asics Nimbus was out of the question if you wanted just a little speed on short or long runs. That’s not the case anymore. Not because it has become that much lighter, but it has become much more ergonomic and you have a significantly better feeling in the shoe. Also on fast runs.
The shoe weighs approximately 305 grams in a size 42½. And the shoe maintains its 10mm drop.

Iloebesko.dk once again predicts the shoe will be a big hit. They often do that when it comes to these top models, and it usually holds true. It’s very rare for Asics to pee on the side. (Excuse the language) So why would they do it this time.

What to expect from the Asics Nimbus 20

A sharp corner is rounded with this launch of the Asics Nimbus 20. The Asics Nimbus has been on the market for almost a lifetime, and then not quite. But when a running shoe reaches its 20th version number, you know it has been around for a really long time.
Asics Nimbus is one of the most popular running shoes in Denmark, and has been so since day one. This is because it is an excellent running shoe with a construction and not least softness that fits very well into the mentality and mind-set of the Danes.

That’s why it’s always a bit more butterflies in the stomach, both for running nerds like the undersigned and for manufacturers, when a new version number is to cancel an old one. In this case, the Asics Nimbus 20 is to take over from the popular Asics Nimbus 19.
The manufacturer’s fear and my anticipation are probably not as great as the last time the Asics Nimbus changed version numbers. Because even though the Nimbus 20 is a sharp corner, the major update and change to the shoe was made last time, namely when the Nimbus went from 18 to 19.
At that time they decided to revolutionize by upgrading the heart of the running shoe, namely the midsole. They switched to using the new FlyteFoam midsole from Asics which is both more shock-absorbing, but “strangely enough” also 33% lighter. So there were at that time about a year ago major unanswered factors in relation to the Nimbus upgrade.
But as is often the case when Asics makes major upgrades to their running shoes, they had obviously done their homework, and the Asics Gel Nimbus 19 was just as successful as its predecessors.

Asics Nimbus 20 has become lighter

In the Asics Nimbus 20, there are still a few really good updates for the discerning runner to look out for. Because as written above, the weight in the Nimbus 19 was reduced considerably by changing the midsole. But in the Asics Nimbus 20, it’s time for the upper. And it has become lighter.

Asics has chosen to make a more open, and therefore lighter upper that allows the feet to breathe better. It is important to point out that the upper has not become less supportive as a result. You still get the good support around your foot that you are used to from your previous Asics Nimbus running shoes. So where it was the sole that reduced the weight last time, in the Asics Nimbus 20 it is the upper that plays a major role in terms of upgrades.

As the upper on the Asics Nimbus 20 has become a bit lighter, it has also meant that the upper has also become a bit looser. This gives a particularly good effect over the foot and in the forefoot of the running shoe. One of the few criticisms that has been made of the Asics Nimbus 19 is that the forefoot was a bit narrow/tight. But this has now been optimized in this successor.

The heel has been optimized in the Nimbus 20

The heel has also been upgraded on the Nimbus 20 compared to the Asics Nimbus 19. Let’s all cross our fingers that this upgrade also helps with durability. Because as happy as we all are for the soft and unique fit that Asics running shoes have always had in the heel, you could be just as annoyed by the lack of durability. Holes often wear out in the heel.
But in the Asics Nimbus 20, a tighter heel has been made, which is also more flexible and soft, so that it can follow the movements of your foot better. And at the same time gives you an optimized hold in the heel. The new structure is more designed to follow the movements of your feet.

Small change in lacing system on Asics Nimbus 20

This small update makes it possible to make your Asics Nimbus running shoe fit a little more uniquely around your foot. With this optimized system, it is now easier for you as a runner to adjust the lacing of the running shoe to your needs.

Asics Nimbus 19 vs. Nimbus 20

If we were to make a more direct comparison of these 2 models, they are around 85% similar. The percentages that have been changed in the Asics Nimbus 20 are mainly the “fault” with the upper which was too tight in the forefoot, and some felt compelled to go up a size to get the shoe to fit properly. And otherwise, they have been in and made these small adjustments to, among other things, the heel and lacing system. So if you are happy with the Asics Nimbus 19, then you will love the Nimbus 20.
Asics Nimbus 20 is still a neutral running shoe for him or her who wants a running shoe with an incredible amount of shock absorption, because that is really one of the characteristics of Asics Nimbus. It has been that way all the way, and of course it still is. If you come from an Asics Gel Nimbus 19 and are now going to try the 20th version of Nimbus from Asics, then our recommendation is that you should be happy. Because no major things have been changed in Nimbus 20, but the “minor” updates that have been made, they are really delicious. So look forward to taking to the road in your new Asics Nimbus 20.

What was new in the Asics Nimbus 19

Once again we are going to put a new number behind the well-known running shoe Asics Nimbus. This time Denmark’s (perhaps) most popular running shoe has come in version 19. And what does it actually have to offer? It has LOTS to offer.
Compared to the last update which went from Nimbus 17 to Nimbus 18, which was a somewhat neutral update, with few things that stood out compared to its predecessor. So this time you have to keep your eyes and ears open, because the new Asics Nimbus 19 comes with some really cool new things. The running shoe itself is updated in some pretty significant areas. Areas where the runner is in focus, and from the first step you will be able to feel the immediate improvement.

Asics Nimbus 19 got lighter

This is where the most effective update in the Nimbus 19 comes in. At least in relation to you as a runner. Asics, in contrast to the previous Nimbus models (16-17 and 18), has now chosen to throw a FlyteFoam midsole into the shoe. It is not only lighter, it is also more effective in its suspension. The FlyteFoam midsole itself in the Nimbus 19 is 33% lighter, but has a proven greater effect in its suspension. So you have now got lighter running shoes with more effect. It is an advantage you will be able to feel from day 1. Oh, it should also be mentioned that the new midsole in the Asics Nimbus 19 also lasts longer. So it also takes longer before you have run your midsole and thus the shoe “tired”

The upper was optimized in Nimbus 19

It’s not so rough anymore. A classic running shoe, and thus also its predecessor Nimbus 18, can look a bit rough in the upper. There used to be room for reinforcements on the outside of the shoe. These are the extra materials that help stabilize the shoe and keep your feet in place. They have now been removed, and Asics now uses 3D technology that works perfectly. So goodbye to heavy reinforcements, and hello to the 3D skeleton.

Better suspension, more pronounced Gel pads

If there is one place where Asics has been known, it is on their super soft and very effective Gel cushions. This is certainly not where users have asked their question marks. But you can still count on more shock absorption in the Asics Nimbus 19. The Gel cushions have been made larger, and they have been optimized in such a way that they now “hit better” you can almost equate it with them having become “foot-shaped”
I Combined with a new and improved midsole (FlyteFoam), this gives a completely unique feel. And the soft feel from previous Asics running shoes has magically improved.

New look for Asics Gel Nimbus 19

Not that it makes it crazy, but with all these very cool updates, there has also been a new look for the Asics Nimbus. The 19th version has become a lot cooler to look at, and the optimized upper in particular reflects that. It has become a bit more streamlined and “smooth” to look at.

The sizes in Nimbus 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are the same. But there is one thing that we were able to confirm after a relatively short time in the new Asics Gel Nimbus 19. The size is an issue you should be aware of. It is not unnatural that you need to go up half a size compared to what you usually wear in this shoe. Asics has changed the upper a little, more specifically the toe box, and this has proven to cause some challenges with the size.

What happened from Asics Nimbus 17 to 18

Asics Gel Nimbus has been the preferred neutral running shoe in Denmark for many years, and with this 18th edition of this fantastic running shoe, I don’t think that aspect will change.
In the Nimbus 18, a change has been made to the shock absorption compared to the Nimbus 17. The gel zones have been optimized in a direction so that they are better able to adapt to your feet and you as a runner. The gel zones in the Nimbus 18 have become larger, and they have become better at absorbing the impact upon landing and releasing energy upon take-off. So clearly an improvement you will be able to feel as a runner.

In addition, Nimbus 18 can boast of having received a updated Guidance Line, it gives you a better transition when you run. This feature is what keeps your feet and your structure in the right position when running. In Asics Nimbus 18 this feature has been optimized so that your transition becomes more dynamic, and you thereby achieve a more “smooth” run.

The fit in the Nimbus 18 is super soft and supple. And the experienced runner will say that it was also the same in the Nimbus 17, and that is of course correct. But in the 18th edition, a small update has been made to the upper so that it is a little softer and more supple. Of course, it is still the lovely seamless upper that hugs the foot and gives you the good “sock-like” fit.

The Asics Gel Nimbus 18 is almost a beautiful copy of its predecessor, the Asics Nimbus 17, just with a little more style and class.

My test of Nimbus

I have done a test, which has been designed in the form of a video review and this text review of Asics Gel Nimbus.

I have tested the running shoes over 800 kilometers.

Here I give my impression of the shoes.

Remember that it is my assessment. You may have a completely different opinion. This section is anything but objective. The purpose is to share my opinions on the shoe.

First impressions (immediate impressions)

When I receive the Nimbus Herre in its latest edition, I have no doubt that it will fit me well.

I cheated a little, as I have previously run in Nimbus and been extremely satisfied with the result.

As for the fit, I think the new version fits very identically to the previous one.. This is a big plus for those of us who buy Asics Nimbus online, whether it’s in Denmark, England, Germany or a whole other place.

After the first run, I have no discomfort, neither in the arch, heel, or anywhere else.

The shoes fit perfectly and I feel like running longer even though my training session has to stop after 18 km.

It turned into a leisurely run at a pace of around 4:50 min/km. Normally I would only run 5-10 km the first time in new running shoes, but in my test of the Asics Gel Nimbus, I have to admit that I was taken by the mood and continued – simply because I couldn’t control the urge.

After 800 km of running training (now it can’t do it anymore)

It’s now 800 km since I first received my Nimbus running shoes.

I’ve run everything from short brisk runs of 4 km to long, leisurely runs of 20-25 km. All at a leisurely pace.

I’m a big fan of the Nimbus. My personal pronation is not that strong, so the shoe fits me well. I also use the Kayano, which is for runners with a little more pronation.

The durability has been the biggest plus..

There are a few small scratches on the upper, but otherwise I think the durability of the shoes has exceeded all expectations. Compared to shoes from Adidas, I think Asics shoes generally last longer.

The shock absorption was as expected. It is very similar to the previous versions.

I personally use the Asics Nimbus on the hardest surfaces when I just need to get a few miles in. And that’s exactly what the shoe is good for.

If you want to run in the woods and the like, I have other recommendations for you. Then you should look at trail running shoes. But for asphalt, the Nimbus is preferable. The grip is good, the take-off is fast, and the landing is the most comfortable I could imagine.

Asics Nimbus size

I often get questions about choosing a size. Asics Gel Nimbus is true to size, which in English is called true to size. This means that if you buy them ½ size larger than your normal everyday shoes, they will in most cases fit perfectly. This applies to both women’s and men’s sizes.

If you are still unsure about the size, you can try my size guide for Asics, New Balance, Nike … etc...It allows you to convert sizes from brand to brand. It is an incredibly useful tool that I personally find works in the vast majority of cases. Please note that we all have unique feet and there may be deviations in sizes.

Advantages and disadvantages

No matter which shoe you buy, you will find advantages and disadvantages. I have listed some of the advantages and disadvantages that I see with the Nimbus shoe. There should be no doubt that I am a fan of the shoe and would definitely recommend the shoe to other runners. When I evaluate advantages and disadvantages, I evaluate the individual shoe in the field it is suitable for. I would never compare the Asics Gel Nimbus with the Asics Gel FujiRacer because they are two completely different shoes used for different purposes.

Why you should buy Gel Nimbus

Asics Gel Nimbus is a fantastic running shoe, but if you’re not convinced yet, read these 4 reasons to buy this running shoe.

• Asics Gel Nimbus has existed for many generations and has been refined so many times that there is not much left to improve.
• Asics Nimbus are cheap running shoes (online at least) – you can achieve very big savings, and you should take advantage of it!
• It is certainly one of the heavier running shoes as it is best suited for volume training, but that is also a good thing. It ensures that you avoid most overuse injuries.
• The Asics Gel Nimbus is a cheap running shoe for how many kilometers it lasts. Some running shoes wear out after far too few kilometers.

Asics Nimbus are excellent running shoes, and if you are a neutral runner who wants to get the most out of your running training, you almost certainly need a pair of Gel Nimbus.

Overall analysis of the Asics shoe

Running style

Not all runners can run in a running shoe like the Asics Gel Nimbus. Many years ago, the technology within running shoes was very limited, but as the years have progressed, running shoes have become more and more technologically developed. This has also meant that you can find a running shoe that fits you even better. At the same time, it also has some limitations.

Asics Gel Nimbus is primarily aimed at neutral runners. Approximately 20% of the Danish population has a neutral running style, 78% has a pronating running style and finally 2% has a supinating running style. If you have a slight tendency to supination or pronation, you can still run in the Nimbus running shoe. If you are a neutral runner, everything is just perfect!

Fit

Based on the normal width (D for men and B for women), the fit is as follows:

• Heel: normal width and normal fit
• Midfoot: normal
• Forefoot: normal, maybe a little wide
• Toe height: normal
• Arch structure: normal
• Shoe shape: semi-curved (like most other running shoes)

Overall, the fit is excellent. The fit is in many cases “normal”. This means that you can expect it to not be extra wide or extra narrow in some places.

In fine clothes

As I also say in my video review of the Asics Gel Nimbus, it is best suited for running on asphalt and gravel. You can use the shoe in the forest, but if you want a specialist shoe, you should want a shoe with better grip in the outsole.

Price level

Nimbus is an expensive running shoe. It is a premium running shoe, which the price reflects. If you are very particular about the price of your running shoes, you should stock up on Nimbus shoes when they are on sale or on sale.

Weight

Asics Gel Nimbus is one of the heavier running shoes. It weighs over 300 grams, which makes me classify it as a heavy running shoe. Some shoes weigh +400 grams, but that’s the minority. The disadvantage of heavy shoes is that you run slower. The advantage is that you get optimal shock absorption.

Type of shoe

An all-round running shoe for those who value comfort over weight in running shoes. You run on asphalt, sidewalks, in cities or on gravel.

Durability

As I mentioned in my test, Asics Nimbus shoes last a very long time. Even after 800 kilometers, the shoes are not worn out, neither in the sole nor the upper. It is a quality seal that also makes the shoe cheaper to run.

Drops and heights on the forefoot and heel

The latest Asics Nimbus shoes have had a lower heel to toe drop. This encourages landing further forward on the foot. However, you are most likely to land on your heel in the Asics Nimbus.

Technical analysis of the Asics shoe

Here I will review the actual construction of the neutral running shoe. Previously we looked at the improvements in the new Asics Gel Nimbus compared to the old model. There have been clear changes. The changes mentioned are just a few of the many specifications of this running shoe. Read more about technical specifications at Asics.com. Not that it’s something that’s necessary to know, but for enthusiasts, there’s now a link.

The outsole

The outsole is particularly important when choosing running shoes. It is the outsole that determines which surface your running shoes are best suited for. Asics Gel Nimbus is clearly preferable on asphalt and gravel. If you run on gravel with the shoes, I am convinced that they are best on hard-packed gravel paths. The outsole is very flat. Therefore, you should not use the shoe in places where it is muddy and where you slip easily.

Midsole

The midsole in the Asics Gel Nimbus is made of Fluidride. This technology is much more durable than what is found in similar products from other brands. In fact, it has been proven that Fluidride is 20% better in terms of the bounce effect. The bounce effect is an expression of how much energy you get back from landing to your take-off. It is especially on longer runs that Fluidride comes into its own. The new midsole is much more durable than previous versions of the midsole from Asics.

Heel

In the latest models, extra Gel has been added to the heel area, which gives you extremely good shock absorption. The shock absorption in Nimbus is phenomenal, and is considered to be among the shoes with the best heel shock absorption, considering the weight.

Middle

The midfoot has a decent amount of stability. The Nimbus is a stiff shoe with good stability. This gives you good conditions for a good roll from heel to forefoot.

Forefoot

The forefoot, like the heel, has more GEL injected, which provides good shock absorption for those who are forefoot landers. You can therefore easily use the Asics Gel Nimbus as a forefoot lander running shoe, even though it is a widespread heel lander running shoe.

Upper part

The upper of the new Asics Gel Nimbus stands out in particular. The upper structure is different from previous models with Fluidfit. The new lacing system gives you great opportunities to make special lacing closures. This gives you the opportunity to get extremely comfortable comfort, whether you have a sunken forefoot, flat feet or if you have other problems.

With Fluidfit the upper is stronger. I have previously criticized the Nimbus upper for being weak. It is my assessment that the strength has been significantly improved.

Difference between women’s and men’s shoes

In general, the Asics Nimbus for women and men are very similar to each other, however, there are some significant differences that you should keep in mind if you as a man want to buy the women’s shoe, or if you as a woman want to buy the men’s version.

• Significantly less shock absorption in the heel in the Nimbus men’s model
• Nimbus lady is a little lighter
• The heel height in the women’s model is approximately 3 mm higher (10%) than the men’s model.
• The forefoot cushioning is best in the Gel Nimbus women’s

The stiffness, flexibility, support and general construction of the shoe are more or less the same. However, if you are considering switching from women’s to men’s, you should be aware of the above.

Comparing Asics Gel Nimbus with other running shoes

Of all the running shoes, the shoe that most resembles is also from Asics, namely the Asics Gel Cumulus. Cumulus is a slightly cheaper running shoe, where the Nimbus is a premium running shoe.
