A versatile “running shoe” that has won the hearts of many crossfit athletes. And it has because it possesses 3 really important things. It is good for running, which you end up doing a part of in crossfit anyway. It is light, which is a huge advantage when jumping. And it is low in the drop, and it just gives a much better feeling when you do crossfit.

Nike Metcon is a newer player on the market at the time of writing. Of course, the world’s largest sports brand also has to have a shoe that is dedicated to crossfit and or weight training. Nike Metcon is an excellent crossfit shoe that is both low, light and with a formidable durability.

As you can see, Inov8 and Reebok dominate the list. Reebok has bought the rights to use the word crossfit which is a protected brand. They have therefore invested heavily in this type of training. Inov8 has always delivered top cross training shoes – they will continue to do so. Watch my video below, where I review what a good crossfit shoe is.

Crossfit is here to stay

CrossFit interest development in Denmark

The minimalist lifestyle, sports and way of being are growing rapidly. The same applies to the crossfit wave. Google is here to stay. The same applies to crossfit. There is no doubt that crossfit will increase in popularity over the next 5-10 years. The strong increase also means a larger market – and here it is important to be fast. I have also just included the most significant increases in search terms within crossfit. So you can see what is moving.

THE GUIDE – the perfect crossfit shoe

I am a huge shoe enthusiast. I spend many hours reading and trying out all the different crossfit shoes that are available. Shut up, there are so many bad options for shoes for crossfit! Wow, how annoying it is. Big brands are trying to color you with huge marketing budgets. Let me review how a good crossfit shoe is built – then you have something to navigate by. I have been training in Nike Free for a long time. They are excellent, but there are better alternatives. Let me review what characterizes a good crossfit shoe. Regarding the choice of brand, which I get a lot of questions about, I especially recommend Inov8 andAdidas sko. Nike sko have also become more popular within crossfit – however, they are far from leading.

It’s just about having a flexible shoe, right?

Primarily, yes. But wait, there are many other factors you need to take into account. I will go over the same factors here that you can see in the video on this page.

1. Crossfit shoes should be flat

It is super important that the shoe is flat. Here we are talking about the “drop” from heel to toe. That is, how many mm of sole is on the heel, and how many mm of sole is on the forefoot. The difference between these two numbers should be as close to 0 as possible. If the shoe has exactly 0 mm drop, it is what is called a zero drop crossfit shoe.

Why does there have to be a low drop?

It’s quite simple. It gives you a better and more natural execution of your exercises. If you wear a pair of running shoes, you create an unnatural body position. Never do crossfit in running shoes!!

2. Weight must be minimized

Why? Thin shoes mean low weight. Low weight means less energy expenditure. Less energy expenditure means more energy for correct execution and heavier weights. That means faster progress. Have you tried training in a pair of ultra-light shoes? Indescribable difference.

3. The lower the drop – the more expert and natural

Let me introduce you to the “heel-to-toe” concept. The concept, in its simplicity, is about measuring the difference from the height of the heel to the height of the forefoot. I personally advocate for as low a drop as possible – especially if you only use the shoes for crossfit. If you are new, I would recommend a 3mm-6mm drop.

4. Optimize your reaction time

Typically, you will find that thin shoes give you better flexibility and reaction time. There is less material to create friction. Here we are talking about both the sole and the top. If you do crossfit indoors, there is typically a good surface where you don’t get splinters and the like.

If you do crossfit outdoors, it might be a good idea to just use a little sole. There’s no need to be annoyed by splinters, stones, etc. Make sure to get a shoe without too much fabric to optimize your reaction time.

5. Flexibility

A flexible shoe is a must. The point of a flexible crossfit shoe is to have good mobility.

d, as you know, is one of the most important parameters in the crossfit genre. If your shoe is not flexible (been there, done that), you will not be able to perform the exercises properly.

To see how flexible a shoe is, I recommend you see how much you can bend it. Try in every possible way, horizontally, vertically, rotatally (I don’t think that word exists), etc.

6. What will you use the shoe for?

If you want to run or do other forms of cardio with your body weight as one of the primary loads, some cushioning is important. Unless you are familiar with the heel-to-toe drop concept and natural running, I would not recommend jumping into a pair of shoes without any heels.

If you are going to do indoor training alone, it is important that you get the best possible sole for that particular surface.

7. Rope climbing – something you include in your training?

If you do a lot of rope climbing in your training, you should pay attention to whether your chosen shoe has extra protection on the inside of the arch. Otherwise, they will break. I have experienced this myself with several pairs of shoes.

The best shoes for crossfit

Based on what you write, I just need the thinnest, lightest, flattest and most flexible shoe.

No, you shouldn’t.

You’ve been walking around in thick, heavy, and not very flexible shoes your whole life. Jumping to the opposite extreme from day 1 would be risky. That’s not something I recommend.

Start with a relatively thin shoe, with a 3-6 mm drop and preferably quite flexible.

If you also use the shoes for running, there is an even greater risk of injury. This is something I have seen so many times. Be careful.
