Flowlife Flowgun | Massage gun | Test & review

test of flowlife flowgun

How about your own personal masseuse wrapped in a small, handy box? It may sound fancy, but it’s not. But having your masseuse within reach at all times, that was the thought that appealed to me.

Most people can probably agree that massage is both good and wonderful. Maybe not always while it is going on, because massage can be painful during the performance, but the feeling afterwards is wonderful. When the tense muscles and joints let go of you, and you reduce the pain and can use your muscles and tendons fully again..
That’s pretty much how I experience this massage gun from Flowlife, called the flowgun. It hasn’t always been a pleasure to use, but the subsequent effects have been really tangible.

The starting point for this test is a man who can probably be described as an exerciser. But then he is probably an exerciser with more of a passion for sports than the average exerciser. The test is based on both the sporting part and the ordinary everyday part.

We have previously tested the Flowpillow Heat from Flowlife, and this test will in some cases refer to it. You can read it here.
A massage cushion that has been good since day one. A massage cushion that has been laughed at several times, but when people are allowed to try it, the smile hardens a bit. It works well.

Flowgun massage gun can optimize your recovery

Recovery massage! A word that can make the tongue twist. But nevertheless, that’s why most people buy the Flowgun massage gun, I’m convinced. And that’s with full understanding on my part. Because it works fantastically for that purpose. And unlike, for example, Flowpillow Heat from the same brand, this massage gun is somewhat more flexible in terms of which area it can be used on.

Who doesn’t want a faster recovery? So you can get back out there and train faster, or maybe you just want the pain to go away. Massage can help with that process. Recovery massage can help your muscles, tendons, and joints recover faster. In fact, it’s estimated that you can achieve a 30% faster recovery.
When you move into recovery massage, what happens? It’s a longer explanation, but in short, the massage helps you increase blood flow and increase oxygen supply to your muscles. In this way, you can promote the process of faster healing.

Recovery is important, it can’t be said too often. Recovery is very important. And why is that? Because it is during your recovery that you get better, stronger or develop. For example, when you do a hard strength training program, you destroy a bit of your muscles and fibers. And when the recovery process starts, the body thinks that it should be able to handle it next time. That’s why it heals harder.
A massage gun with a good strength can help you boost the recovery process. But it can also be used for general well-being. More on that later.

Lactic acid is NOT your friend

Therefore, it is about getting rid of it as quickly as possible. And that is exactly what massage can help with. By effectively massaging with a massage gun from Flowlife, you can help the process along. Massage helps reduce the risk of lactic acid buildup.

Massage gun – what is it?

It is, roughly speaking, a rechargeable-forever-massager. A massager you can take with you wherever you want. Of course, it is not a real massager, and I must be the first to admit that such a massage gun in no way replaces a masseur completely. I still enjoy going to a masseur once in a while, because I can work more concretely. But my Flowgun massage gun is a fantastic alternative, which I use on an 80/20 basis. 80% of the time I use it for recovery, and 20% of the time for well-being.

Who uses a Flowgun massage gun?

I would be tempted to say everyone. And I mean that. Here at home, both children and parents benefit from the massage gun from Flowlife. The undersigned uses it mostly in connection with training and sports. My wife is a hairdresser, and unfortunately some defects in primarily the shoulders and neck are part of that, Flowgun solves that quite nicely. The children use the massage gun exclusively for well-being.

How to use Flowgun from Flowlife

We have made a short video showing how to operate the Flowgun massage gun.

Full body massage with Flowgun massage gun

In contrast to Flowpillow Heat from Flowlife, their Flowgun massage gun is much more flexible. I really enjoy their massage pillow on my legs and feet, and partly my neck. However, the right massage in the neck requires a lot of patience in terms of sitting and lying down correctly..
Flowgun is much more flexible. If you want, you can almost get a full body massage. Which must be said to be really good. And included in the package when you buy a Flowgun, 4 different massage heads are included. More on that later in relation to the flexibility it provides.

I would like to mention here that the combination of the 2 products is fantastic for me. I think Flowpillow Heat can do something on the hamstrings and calf muscles that I can’t quite achieve with a massage gun (Flowgun). The 2 rotating elements that are in Flowpillow, they just grab the muscles differently than Flowgun does.

Massage: Yourself or someone else

It’s so incredibly practical with a Flowgun from Flowlife that you decide whether it’s yourself or someone else who gives the massage. That’s one of the reasons why I think it’s flexible as hell. I’m not dependent on having to spend 2 hours on my knees begging to persuade my wife to massage my neck. Luckily, I can do that myself..
There can be areas on the back that are practically impossible to massage yourself. Believe me, I’ve tried. So you have to get on your knees and use your good persuasion skills, or avoid that area.

You can wake up your muscles before training

Muscles can be cold and stiff, and without pain. We all know that feeling of muscles being stiff and having difficulty getting them to move..
There you can actually use your Flowgun for pre-workout. You can benefit from massaging your muscles a little before training to wake them up, increase blood circulation and thereby be more prepared.

I have tried this method. Due to some problems with my lower back and neck, it is still advisable for the undersigned to stretch my muscles, especially my lower back, before training. So I thought it couldn’t hurt to try the Flowgun massage gun. In addition to being comfortable, it must give roughly the same effect. Because I have basically done something worse.
Where I have noticed a huge change according to pre-massage before training. It is in the muscle groups around the thighs (front) and calf muscles. The 2 large muscle groups can be tired for 2-3 days after a crazy hard training. Typically on the 2nd or 3rd day there is basically no pain, so I can train again. I can report that “awakening the muscles” with the massage gun works. I can only recommend it.

4 different types of massage with Flowlife Flowgun

It might be wrong to say that there are 4 types of massage, because in reality there are a lot of options. But there are 4 different massage heads included in the Flowgun case. And that gives you a lot of combinations of massage. It all depends on how you use the individual elements. I will give you my take on how I use the individual massage heads in another section.

Large round ball:
round ball for flowgun
The massage head that I use the most. It’s good for larger muscle groups like thighs and calves. And if you want to massage the whole neck, and not a specific point, then this ball-shaped head also provides the greatest well-being..
I actually also use this massage head under my feet with great success.

Flat round:

In my opinion, it actually covers a large part of the same area as the large round ball. However, with this flat mouth I can reach more specific areas. For example, on the front of the thigh, with this one I can achieve a “more aggressive” massage on selected points..
The second-most-used massage head in my suitcase

Fork:

I don’t use this one very often. Flowlife itself recommends that it can be used for, among other things, arms. And I can see what they mean. On the “not so broad muscle groups” you can use this fork to reach both sides of the muscle, which gives me a more intense massage.

Bullet points:

Flowlife recommends this for different areas on the back. I don’t think it only works for this. I also use it if I have muscle contractions that are a little stubborn. Then this pointer can go a little deeper into a specific area.Flowlife recommends this for different areas on the back. I don’t think it only works for this. Massage gun or foam roller

There is a tendency for massage guns to take a bit of a backseat to the otherwise insanely popular foam rollers. And they do so because with a massage gun you can work deeper into the tissue and into the sore muscles. A foam roller works somewhat more superficially than you will experience with a massage gun.

This is what you should note when choosing a massage gun

There are a few factors you should keep an eye on when buying a massage gun. The version I have tested here, which is the Flowgun from Flowlife, scores almost top marks on everything. So that’s why I can’t compare it to a worse version unfortunately. But I would definitely recommend you to take a look at this

Weight:
The massage gun should have an acceptable weight. It should not be too heavy (and actually not too light either). It should be manageable if you are, for example, giving yourself a neck massage. It may sound strange, but it should not be too heavy at all, because then it will be too hard and too awkward a position to sit in. On the other hand, it should not be too light, because then you will have difficulty forcing any effect out of it.

massage yourself with flowgun

Strength:
The motor has to be able to handle something. Not just in terms of the number of vibrations per minute, but also has to be able to push through. It has to be able to give you the different levels that you need. There should be somewhere between 1 and 6 levels in a massage gun. Where the 6th level is perhaps so powerful that it is not recommended for a beginner to try it. But it requires a proper motor. Flowgun has that.

Grip:
It may sound wrong, but it should fit well in the hand. The gun should not be too big or too small for that matter. It is an absolute plus if the handle is fitted with non-slip material. Flowgun has that

Massage options:
Here you should look at levels and heads. How hard/soft can the massage gun massage. Is that enough for your expectations? And then take a look at how many massage heads are included. How many areas of the body can you hit with the corresponding heads. There are 4 heads included for the Flowlife Flowgun. And that has covered my needs well.

Noise level:
Depending on where you want to use your massage gun, think about the noise level. For example, if you want to use it at work, it is important that it does not disturb your colleagues. Or if you are sitting on the couch in the evening, your family will probably appreciate that the television does not have to be turned on at max volume.

Strong motor in Flowgun

There are different models of massage guns. The one that is basically referred to in this article is the Flowgun from Flowlife. And here I would like to highlight several of its absolute strengths..
Flowlife Flowgun is equipped with a robust motor and can give you up to 3200 vibrations per minute. It is an effective massage, and with the possibility of lots of power.

Flowgun massage gun can be used by everyone

Yes yes and yes. We’ve touched on this a bit before. Everyone can use and operate a massage gun like the Flowgun from Flowlife. And everyone can also get something out of it in one way or another. I’ll touch on in a few paragraphs why I think this product is not just made for us sportsmen and athletes.

Whether it’s recovery or well-being or something completely different, there’s no denying that Flowgun can be used by everyone. My youngest boy, who is 7 years old, has no problems using it.

Easy to operate – up and running in 5 seconds

The Flowgun massage gun is incredibly easy to use, and it’s super quick to get started. If the storage case is empty, I’d venture to say that you can get started in about 5 seconds. Pick up the gun, attach the massage head, and you’re good to go. No need to find a proper spot first.

Flowgun is not just for athletes

It could very well be that it was originally created for sportsmen and other athletes. I actually have no doubt that it is.
But personally I think that the Flowgun massage gun goes much further. Earlier in the article I mentioned my own wife who is a hairdresser. She is happy with the Flowgun because it can help her with tension headaches etc. I use it myself of course in connection with sports and training, but when you sit 7.5 hours in front of a computer every day, tension can easily arise in the neck, arms, wrists etc. Here too the Flowgun is fantastic.
So in reality, there are many different groups that can benefit from such a machine?

Flowgun has a little brother

Flowlife has several massage guns on the program. Among other things, they have developed a Flowgun Pocket. A compact, but surprisingly strong massage gun. A Flowgun Pocket has the advantages that it is much more handy and easier to carry around. You can read our review of Flowgun Pocket here

Convenient storage secures your investment

I know that price is relative, in relation to who is looking at it. But for me 2500-3000,- is a lot of money. And that’s probably the price you should expect to invest if you want a massage gun that is worth something. You can see prices for the Flowlife Flowgun elsewhere in this article, or you can see it here
That’s why I think you should see it as an investment. And like with all other investments, you have to look at the return. That’s what I did. I asked myself a few questions:

1. Do you need it?
Yes, I do, because I do a lot of exercise. I sit down all day. And my wife can use it too.

2. Do you want to use it?
Yes, because it’s easy to get started. It doesn’t take long to get started. Just open the box, and 5 seconds later there’s a massage.

3. Do you want to save money?
Yes, I thought I would. Overall, it still takes some money out of our pocket compared to masseurs, physiotherapists, etc. So in the long run it will pay for itself.

Benefits of Flowgun massage gun

A general benefit of using the Flowgun massage gun is that it can help you recover faster and easier. When you use it, you reduce the risk of lactic acid buildup and increase blood circulation. This way, you can get rid of waste products faster and be ready again.

A specific advantage of the Flowgun from Flowlife is its strength. If you have seen our video, you know what I mean. It is not only robust, but it is also powerful, so that the helping effect can already be felt at levels 1 and 2.

Flowgun will also save you money in the long run. It won't take many "cancelled" massage appointments before you've earned your Flowgun. Not that a Flowgun is exactly the same as visiting a massage therapist, but when you prevent and help yourself with muscle tension with your Flowgun, I'm sure it will go longer between massage therapist visits.

It is practical. I think it is a clear advantage of Flowlife having chosen a small practical suitcase where everything is in. This means for me that I get to use it, and I get to take it with me to relevant places. A Flowgun is perfect for me to bring on a ski holiday. There you can easily get sore muscles, and here your Flowgun massage gun can really help you. Of course I also use it in connection with running, spinning and for general well-being.

Fast rechargeable battery. It's perfect that you can charge your Flowgun again and again, but at the same time that it works as fast as it does.

The weight is good. When you can feel how powerful the motor is in the Flowgun, I personally think the weight of 970 grams is a good thing. It fits well in the hand and is correctly adjusted.

It's not silent, but it's certainly not noisy either. It's a huge advantage that you can use Flowgun without disturbing others, for example at work. Or on the couch in the evening, while the rest of the family wants to watch TV.

Disadvantages of Flowgun massage gun

The price is of course an issue. And with a suggested retail price of around 3000,-, that is a disadvantage in itself. So you have to decide for yourself whether you can see the long-term investment in a Flowgun massage gun.

You just have to learn how to use it. It takes a few times before you master the technique. So the first few times it is definitely recommended that you start at the lowest level and work your way up carefully.

The number of drawbacks may be a bit of a reflection of what I think of the Flowlife Flowgun massage gun. I think it’s a wonderful invention. Especially for someone like me who suffers from heavy and sore muscles BIG TIME after hard workouts.

Customer testimonial Flowlife Flowgun

Ulrik Olsen, Flowgun has helped me a lot

I have had the Flowgun for a while now and after the first time I used it, I could already tell that it was significantly better than many other massage devices I have tried.. Since I have had a very monotonous desk job for many years, I have regularly been to a massage therapist for my right shoulder, where the pain often ended up radiating into both the arm, fingers and up into the neck. Fortunately, I no longer need that after I bought my Flowgun.. Since the Flowgun has several different heads that can be attached, I can switch depending on the type of muscle group that needs to be massaged. I mostly use the bullet pointer head for the neck and the muscle near the shoulder blade. I use the fork when I need to massage the large muscle on my arm. I use the large round ball and the flat one for my glutes and thighs. All in all a fantastic massage gun. May seem a bit expensive, but is definitely worth the extra money.–Ulrik Olsen, Vemmelev [/testimonial]

Rechargeable battery in Flowgun Massage Gun

Many people might expect it, but it’s a good thing that such devices are made with rechargeable batteries. I couldn’t imagine such products being successful if you had to constantly change batteries. And another fact is that you probably won’t experience the same power in products then.

Satisfaction guarantee proves seriousness

I also wrote this when I tested the Flowlife Flowpillow Heat. I really think it shows faith in your own abilities when you offer a satisfaction guarantee like Flowlife does.
You can use the Flowgun freely for 30 days, and if you are not satisfied, you can return it. That way you believe in yourself and know that you have made a product that works and lasts.

Get good massage gun suppliers

There is no doubt that the Flowgun massage gun from Flowlife works flawlessly. And that is why I am so super happy with it. In a previous section I have pointed out what you should look for when buying a new massage gun..
There are other items on the market as well. Flowgun is not unique in its class. There are also other serious providers of massage guns.

Hyperice massage gun

Basically a massage gun that is very similar to the Flowgun from Flowlife. However, there are still some places where one or the other model stands out..
Hyperice has made 2 well-known models:

– Hyperice HyperVolt
– Hyperice HyperVoltPlus

Many things are similar if we take a Hyperice massage gun and hold it up against a Flowlife Flowgun. These are 2 of the best brands you can choose if you want a high quality massage gun.

Flowgun vs. Hyperice massage gun

Even though they are very similar, there are a few differences I would really like to tell you about. And I have taken the updated model HyperVoltPlus from Hyperice as a starting point.

Weight:
A massage gun should not be too heavy, that goes without saying. Then it will be too heavy to work with in additional positions.
Flowlife Flowgun weighs 1kg
The Hyperice Hypervolt Plus weighs around 1.2 kg

Who wins: Flowgun

Noise level:
Hyperice HyperVoltPlus is equipped with quiet glide. Flowgun doesn’t have an official name for theirs (as far as I know) but both companies make a big effort to keep it quiet.

Who wins: Draw

The price:
Price is relative. And at the time of writing, Flowgun is the cheapest of the 2. It has a suggested retail price of 3999 SEK, while HyperVoltPlus has a suggested price of 3699,- Exchange rates and supply taken into account, I think Flowgun ends up as the cheapest. But fortunately you can follow our price tables, so you are always up to date.

Who wins: Flowgun

Massage levels:
HyperVoltPlus gives you 3 levels. In Flowgun you can adjust within 5 levels. I would say that the more levels, the better. Because then the massage gun covers both the experienced user and the beginner.

Who wins: Flowgun

RPM:
How many vibrations can the motor/massage gun take per minute? Both powerful motors can go up to 3200

Who wins: Draw

Number of massage heads:
In Flowgun you get 4 different massage heads in the case. HyperVoltPlus gives you 5 massage heads

Who wins: HyperVolt Plus

Battery life:
Both have a rechargeable battery. And I won’t go into how long it runs and how long it doesn’t. Both guns have a relatively short charging time.

Who wins: Draw
