What’s new in the New Balance 1260V5?

New Balance 1260, now in version number 5. But what does it offer? There are quite a few great updates in version 5 if we compare it to the New Balance 1260 v4. The most prominent upgrade is that there is now N2 cushioning in the forefoot, combined with Abzorb cushioning throughout the length of the foot. So the soft running shoes have now become even softer and more comfortable in a snap.
The upper has also been given a little boost, you will probably quickly discover that your feet will have a little easier time getting rid of heat in the future. They have optimized the mesh material, so you can now breathe even better.
And the last little thing I think is important to mention in the NB 1260 v5 is that the pronation wedge has now been given a little boost. Or maybe rather the opposite. It has been adjusted a little bit so that it is more comfortable, and you can now run even more “smooth” without noticing the pronation wedge.
In Denmark, many people run in Asics running shoes, But abroad, the picture is different. New Balance running shoes are very well known abroad, and it’s a bit of a shame that running shoes of such good quality are not more popular in Denmark. However, things have improved significantly over the years..

New Balance 1260V5 is a running shoe that is aimed at the stability-demanding runner. The effective and powerful shock absorption provides a comfortable running feel and provides strong pronation control. This pronation control and stability is equipped with “Post Applied” pronation control, which has a more sustained strength and performance. This also weighs less than the previous pronation control. So more performance with less weight.

The powerful cushioning is combined with a lower drop of just 8mm, which gives a stronger push-off. The power transfer from heel strike to forefoot push-off has been improved with the TBeam technology, which effectively transfers the power, while the plastic construction helps to stiffen the midsole of the New Balance 1260V4. Although the NB 1260V4 has always been known as a comfortable running shoe, they have given the upper a little more plushness for a more comfortable running experience and fit.

First impressions and run

I’ve been really excited to test and review the New Balance 1260, also with video, as the shoe is a far cry from the more minimalist and natural running shoes that I usually run in. But it’s always exciting to try something new, so I’m trying to forget my prejudices. At first glance, I honestly think it looks a bit big and clunky. The design is also not something that I immediately like. I’m excited to see how the shoe runs. It hasn’t been the best start.

It is a significantly different experience to run in the New Balance 1260. It is not because it feels like a clumsy running shoe, considering its design, it actually feels surprisingly light. The shoe is really comfortable and gives a good experience. Even here for the first time, it already sits comfortably on the shoe. However, I feel a little that I lose the feeling of the ground with the strong shock absorption. I like the low drop of the shoe, but my first thought is that the shock absorption is too strong. I feel like I lose too much strength every time I take a step.

After many hundreds of kilometers

There are parts of the NB 1260 that I’m really happy with, and some things that I’ll probably never be a huge fan of. Let’s start with the latter, first of all I’ll never be a big fan of the heavy shock absorption. I can see the idea if you’ve had previous injuries or are a heavier runner, but as an experienced runner I find that I lose some of the running feel. I don’t really get any contact with the ground and it feels a bit strange.

However, I am really satisfied with the comfort and durability of the shoe. I have forced myself to run several hundred km in the shoe and I have not yet seen any signs of wear, either on the outsole or on the upper, where I often wear out my running shoes quickly. That is extremely positive. The comfort is also beyond reproach. The shoe fits comfortably without pressing. Personally, I think there is a bit too much room in the heel, but my experience tells me that this is a general thing for New Balance, who design their shoes with a little more room in the heel. All in all, I can easily understand why the shoe has become so popular. It is just not for me.

Running style

It is a running shoe that is aimed at runners with moderate/heavy pronation. The New Balance 1260 has a strong shock absorption and very strong stability support, to help you resist the inappropriate pressure on the foot when pronating. In fine clothes

New Balance 1260 is mainly aimed at those of you who run the majority of your km on asphalt, gravel and other similar hard surfaces. I have run with the running shoe on other surfaces such as forest floors and the like. However, it has not been an unconditional success. Its grip is not effective and rough enough for running on too soft, smooth and uneven surfaces.

Price level

The recommended price for the New Balance 1260 is 1600 kr, which is definitely on the higher end. You also get a lot for your money with advanced stability and comfort technology, but you also get to pay for it. Fortunately, it is a popular running shoe, so the competition on the price is high, which means that you can always find the New Balance 1260 on sale and at prices that are far below the recommended price. Therefore, you can make a good deal and get a lot for your money when purchasing the NB 1260.

The New Balance 1260 weighs a lot. The added weight is one of the drawbacks of the high stability, pronation control and shock absorption. It all adds up to weight.

Shoe type

New Balance is mainly a training shoe for long, and many, runs on harder surfaces. The strong shock absorption is the perfect partner for such runs. In mass training and stability running shoes, weight does not matter so much. But the high weight makes the New Balance 1260 not an obvious choice as competition shoes.

Heel drop

Typically, you will find a higher drop in running shoes with such strong cushioning and stability. This is done to make it easier to move the foot from heel strike to take-off. New Balance has gone almost directly into the other trench with the 1260, with a heel drop of just 8 mm. This type of heel drop is between completely minimalist running shoes and traditional running shoes with a high drop.

Part 2 – Construction of the running shoe

Outsole

The strong outsole is the foundation for the durability of this popular running shoe. The New Balance 1260 has a “Blown Rubber” outsole that is extremely durable and will not wear out after many miles on hard surfaces. Both the front and back of the outsole are curved up to give you the most comfortable run and help you effectively initiate and complete your stride.

Midsole

In the midsole you will find a large part of the technology that makes the New Balance 1260 exactly the running shoe it is. Throughout the midsole you will find the responsive N2 cushioning, which does not take up much space, but provides strong shock absorption throughout the entire shoe. The new and lighter Acteva Lite foam provides the most optimal compression in the midsole foam.

Heel

Much of the stabilizing and absorbing technology is located in the heel. The shoe’s Abzorb Crash Pad provides increased control, stability and helps you complete each and every step in the best way. The wedge, which helps counteract pronation, starts in the heel and ends at the midfoot. The heel is asymmetrically constructed.

Midfoot

One of the big revolutions in the New Balance 1260 is that the pronation control is placed further forward than in other running shoes. The wedge starts in the midfoot to counteract the pronation movement as quickly as possible. The midfoot also features the new T Beam technology, which is a TPU reinforcement under the foot that increases the stability and torsional stiffness of the shoe.

Forefoot

The forefoot has the least shock absorption, as this is where it is most important that the absorption is responsive and helps you get a powerful push-off. With the newer and more flexible forefoot, you can really push through with the foot pads. It is more precisely here that you will find the Acteva Lite technology, which gives you lightweight foam with optimal compression.

Upper part

The upper is built in a breathable mesh material, which with its specially designed FantomFit, provides great support and comfort in a super lightweight package. The upper has no annoying seams that can cause uncomfortable pressure points in the shoe.

For men and women

The New Balance 1260 is largely the same for both men and women. Regardless of whether you are looking for the men’s or women’s model, the focus in both models is to provide the best stability, strong shock absorption and to counteract overpronation. If you look a little more nerdy into the NB 1260, the men’s model has slightly more powerful shock absorption in the heel, compared to the women’s model. This is probably done to take into account men’s higher weight and thus a stronger landing on the heel.

The New Balance 1260 is a really comfortable shoe, in high quality, which can be used on a lot of training trips and a lot of km before it gives up. As a starting point, it is a bit expensive, but if you use the price comparison at the top of the article, you can find the NB 1260 quite cheaply online.
