Adidas Supernova ST, this is what you’ll notice

Adidas Supernova ST? You might be confused, and we can’t blame you. The Adidas Supernova running shoe isn’t new, it’s just been redesigned and given new possibilities. It’s an old horse in a new coat.
Back in the day, it was actually called Adidas Supernova Sequence or Adidas Supernova Glide. Now it’s just called SUPERNOVA, and they’ve chosen to put short designations on the back to indicate what the shoe can do. Adidas Supernova is available in both a stable and a neutral version. We have used the Adidas Supernova ST as the starting point for this test. ST stands for stability = pronation running shoe.

The Adidas Supernova is definitely not a lightweight. But still, I think you should notice the effect the shoe has when you put it on. Because even though the weight doesn’t directly indicate that you’re running fast in the shoe, it by no means feels heavy and indicates speed.
This is partly due to the very soft and forgiving Boost midsole in the shoe. It gives so much return energy back to you with every step, so there’s plenty of help with propulsion from the shoe. This hides the slightly high weight of the shoe very well.

You’ll also be impressed by the specially constructed upper, which is naturally seamless and highly breathable. Here you really get a wow experience in terms of comfort. Because if there’s one thing Adidas Supernova has, it’s comfort. You become one with your running shoes when you step into them. Another part of the great comfort is the very stable heel counter (Fitcounter), which keeps you in place with every step and ensures that you have the optimal execution with every step. At the same time, it’s both soft and comfortable. When you have nothing to say about the heel of a running shoe, it’s usually good. This is the case with the Adidas Supernova ST. You don’t notice anything, no discomfort, ergo the heel cup does what it’s supposed to, and in a very comfortable way.

The Adidas Supernova ST is a running shoe that suits many runners. With its high level of comfort and Boost midsole, it can be used for a bit of tempo training with good intentions. On the other hand, the shoe is also geared to take you through long runs with maximum softness – during the entire run.

Adidas Supernova ST replaces the older version Adidas Supernova Sequence

Adidas Supernova ST is the shoe to buy if you love stability and comfort in a great combination

You buy Adidas Supernova ST if you're a fan of softness. The Boost build-up in the shoe makes your run a great experience every time

You do NOT buy Adidas Supernova ST if you are a neutral runner. Then you buy the model simply called Supernova. ST stands for stability = pronation

What have others said about the running shoe?

See below what others have said about Adidas Supernova ST

Kasper Knudsen, A complete experience

  • Adidas Supernova is a complete experience for me. Lots of great cushioning and a very good fit. Not the lightest running shoe in the world, but I'm not the type who cares about that either. For me, it's all about the shoe being good and comfortable to wear. –Kasper Knudsen

Charlotte Hansen, It’s definitely soft

  • I'm an ordinary runner. For me, it's not about the weight of the shoe, mileage or anything else. I care about whether the shoe is soft to wear and whether it hurts anywhere when I run. That's not the case with the Adidas Supernova, so I'm happy.–Charlotte Hansen

Morten Mortensen, How to do both

  • Well, I don't really think the Adidas Supernova does anything special for me. On the other hand, I can't say that it does the opposite either. So for me it's an acceptable running shoe without the big splash in the street–Morten Mortensen

First experiences running in Adidas Supernova ST

In fact, a running shoe that should fit my running style. It’s more the rule than the exception that I test a running shoe that doesn’t fit my running style.
But that’s the way it is, and as I’ve mentioned before, the human body can get used to a lot, and for me that’s adapting to many different running shoes.

But as I said, the Adidas Supernova ST is one of the few running shoes that fits the description for me. A running shoe for the intermediate or overpronating runner. So somehow I was both excited and looking forward to getting out and running in this shoe.
I admit it had been a long time since I had a pair of Adidas Supernova on my feet, and what I remembered from the last time (many years ago) was that it wasn’t like I thought wow, what a great shoe. But since Adidas Supernova has been reborn, of course it had to be given a chance. But it was with some skepticism that I approached the task.

There was no need to worry in that direction. From the first contact with the running shoe (when I unpacked it) I realized that a lot had happened. The shoe stank of better quality than last time, by far..
Adidas Supernova ST is the running shoe for you if you love a great fit and amazing softness. It’s really as simple as that. But it’s probably not quite that simple.

But I think you can tell from the start that you’re running on the optimized and very popular Boost sole in this version of Supernova. It’s actually quite strange how much you feel it. And that’s not a bad thing, quite the opposite.
The Boost sole is this energy-friendly midsole that is not affected by external elements such as temperature. This means you can expect the same from the midsole whether it’s summer or winter.
That’s not what you feel when you run. What you feel is how much energy the midsole gives back to you with every step. I think it’s a bit hard to explain the feeling, but imagine those plastic things you press on so they say bang. That soft feeling of one of those, but without it ending up saying bang. That’s probably the best way I can describe the feeling I get from that midsole.

My clear feeling about the Adidas Supernova ST is that it will never be, or would have been, my running shoe of choice for short and fast runs. But on the other hand, it could easily have become a favorite for the long runs.
It’s definitely what I would describe as a crowd training running shoe with a capital M. In my world, it reminds me a lot of the Nimbus in what it does. A running shoe for the person who wants lots of softness, lots of kilometers, a good fit and who doesn’t run intervals or tempo runs. Or at least not so keen on the shoe being as light as possible.

More experiences with Supernova ST

There’s no doubt that if you (mentally) don’t care how much your shoes weigh, the Adidas Supernova ST is an optimal running shoe for those who like to run short, medium and long distances. The Supernova ST caters to a very wide audience. And that makes us predict it to be a great sales success for Adidas. The audience for the Adidas Supernova ST (and the regular Supernova) is large, very large.
When we write (psychologically) in relation to the weight, it’s because my experience tells me that if you didn’t know it weighed 326 grams (size 43), you wouldn’t accuse the shoe of being heavy. But soberly speaking, 326 grams is a relatively heavy running shoe. I just don’t think you notice it when you run in the Supernova.

Size selection in Adidas Supernova

You should go for your normal size. I use size 43 or 43 ½ in a lot of running shoe brands, and I also use size 43 1/3 in the Adidas Supernova ST.
If you are unsure how to find the correct size, you can use our size calculator or you can buy your running shoes by the centimeter measurement. Inside the shoe, in 9½ out of 10 cases, a centimeter measurement is always mentioned on the shoe. Sometimes it’s under cm (centimeters) other times you can look for jp (divide by 10)
So if you have a pair of running shoes that you know fit and have been good, look through them and buy by the centimeter measurement. This is especially good if you are about to change running shoe models or brands.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

The comfort

The comfort of the Adidas Supernova ST is amazing. It sits really well on the foot and the combination of the soft, forgiving, supportive (and snug) upper and the very soft and rebounding midsole - it just makes for a great match

The price

The price is relative, and the meaning behind the price is probably even more relative. But personally, I think this running shoe is packed with great features and benefits. And with that in mind, I don't think the recommended 1100,- is scary. Especially considering that you'll most likely find it cheaper in an online shop.

The heel

An underrated topic in a running shoe. No one really talks about it much unless it's causing problems and discomfort. So it is with the heel. But I really want to emphasize that the heel itself in Adidas Supernova is a huge advantage. It just works. A really good grip around the heel that controls your foot almost to perfection. And at the same time, your heel and Achilles tendon are molded into a soft environment.

Midsole

The same song over and over again, but that doesn't make it any less true. The Boost midsole does a lot for the shoe. Super supple, soft and packed with rebound energy. That's what the Boost midsole offers. And it just works. At the same time, you get a midsole that basically lasts for many kilometers, as it is “robust” and durable.

Disadvantages

Libra

Although I have an opinion about the weight of the Adidas Supernova ST, and I think it gets lost in the overall look of the shoe. There are certainly others who will care about it, and a “fighting weight” of 326 grams in a medium size is too much.

Bodices

It's a bit fragile. But that's only to be expected from such a supple and soft upper. The price you pay in this case is that the upper is also a little too fragile.

The confusion

When a geek like me has to spend a lot of time figuring out this whole “Supernova confusion”, I'm sure there are many others facing the same issue. What is what? Why is it now only called Supernova? What does that ST mean? Where has the old Adidas Supernova Glide gone? The confusion is total, but luckily there are sites like ours on the Internet.

Analysis Part 1: Who should run in the Adidas Supernova (ST)

This analysis part 1 is based on what type of runner should run in Adidas Supernova

Which running style

Well, you’re lucky that Adidas Supernova covers the whole range. We’ve tested it as an ST model, which means the shoe is built for a runner with pronation. But if you buy the regular Adidas Supernova, the shoe is neutral and fits the neutral runner.
Adidas Supernova is what I would describe as one of the few “classic” running shoes. Many running shoes today have some kind of “free” structure and otherwise it must be a shoe for forefoot running or similar. Supernova is like the good old days. A running shoe built according to the principles of pronation or not. And then Adidas just chose to make the confusion total by making the same shoe for one type of runner and another. Smart or not, I like the shoe.

Fit

There’s nothing to be nervous about. In my opinion, Adidas Supernova lives up to most people’s expectations. A soft and comfortable upper. A mesh upper that is super breathable and, of course, completely seamless. This reduces the risk of discomfort and chafing.
You should be prepared that it doesn’t have this “loose fit” like for example a Asics Nimbus or an Asics Kayano has. The Adidas Supernova has a tighter fit around your foot.

Surfaces and conditions

Very versatile when it comes to surfaces and conditions. The good rubber sole from Continental has a good grip on most surfaces. The Adidas Supernova ST is naturally designed as a running shoe for asphalt and other hard surfaces. That’s also where it performs best. But a run on a flat forest path or gravel trail is easily handled.

Price level

As we have mentioned before, not only in this review, but in general, price is relative for the individual user. Therefore, this assessment is of course only based on what I think, however, it is compared to what benefits I can see in the shoe and what it offers in relation to it. After all, I see a lot of running shoes in a year.
Adidas Supernova ST has a recommended retail price of 1.100,- So the starting price is very close to this invisible and magical limit around 1.000,- That alone is a big advantage. But if you look at what the shoe offers compared to the price, I think it’s also a good and fair price. Let’s say you’re lucky enough to find the Adidas Supernova ST on offer, you get maybe 20% off, and the price is just under 900,- That’s an excellent price for a shoe with the capabilities of the Adidas Supernova ST.

What does the Adidas Supernova ST weigh?

Maybe just a little too much. But you can be quite calm. I don’t think it’s something you notice, funnily enough.
The whole shoe, its fantastic midsole and the good fit mean that you don’t really notice that the shoe might weigh 20 grams too much per shoe. My Adidas Supernova ST in size 43 1/3 weighs 326 grams, and of course I would like to get that weight under 300 grams or close to it. But I live with it, because honestly I don’t notice it.

Care and maintenance of the Adidas Supernova ST

You can always read our guide about washing and maintaining running shoes here. We’ll show you the do’s and don’ts when it comes to washing your running shoes. And there’s probably a little tip on how to remove sweat odor and bacteria from your running shoes.
But as the overriding rule, you should never put your running shoes in the washing machine. It can go well, but then suddenly it goes wrong, and that’s a real shame.

Drop height in Adidas Supernova ST

We’re talking classic running shoes when we talk about Adidas Supernova ST. And so does the drop. Low drop running shoes are gaining more and more ground, or at least being hyped more and more at the time of writing. But an Adidas Supernova ST is the good old classic running shoe with a drop of 10mm.
This means that the shoe is suitable for the regular (heel-lander) runner. I call it the regular running style because it’s what most people know and practice. And it’s only recently that more people have become aware of forefoot running and midfoot running. But it probably requires a running shoe with a lower drop.

Drop heights:
Forefoot height: 22mm
Heel height: 32mm

Analysis part 2: Technical review of the Adidas Supernova ST

A few more technical details and designations in relation to the running shoe. What features and materials have gone into the Adidas Supernova ST that make up the whole

The outsole

There’s not much else other than it works. And you probably wouldn’t expect anything else. The collaboration between Adidas and Continental to develop rubber and outsoles for Adidas running shoes is excellent.
A good grip on the ground. Adidas Supernova ST is designed for running on roads and other hard surfaces, but in fact, the outsole’s good grip allows you to run on forest trails or gravel paths. However, you should stay away from trail running in the shoe. It’s both too high for that and the upper is far too fragile.

the sole of the adidas supernova st

Midsole

Adidas has had huge success with their Boost sole. This midsole consists of a lot of small PU capsules, which together make up this amazing material. A very durable and hard-wearing material that lasts for a long time. Most importantly, it also has a fantastic responsive ability to create softness and return energy in every step you take. The Boost midsole is a midsole that has taken the world by storm, and it has done so for the sole reason that it works as it should.

Heel

Under benefits, we mentioned that the heel was something unique. And indeed it is. A FITCOUNTER has been implemented in the heel section of the Adidas Supernova ST. In short, this means that your heel gets the optimal working conditions. The heel and Achilles tendon are not only held in place as they should be, but also wrapped in soft and comfortable material. So it’s a super nice feeling.

adidas supernova st rear view

Shock absorption

It is balanced as it should be. The cushioning in the Adidas Supernova ST comes primarily from the Boost midsole in the shoe. And we’ve already talked about the effect it has. So you don’t have to worry about the cushioning and softness in this running shoe. It works as it should.

Upper part

We’ve talked a bit about the upper under “Fit”, but in the Adidas Supernova ST we’re dealing with a lightweight mesh upper. An upper that’s super soft and flexible, and it’s created without any seams. The upper of the Adidas Supernova ST fits snugly to your foot and gives you that “sock feeling” For those who like it, it’s a fantastic feeling.
Overall just a really good comfort in the upper.

Comparisons for Adidas Supernova ST

The direct comparison would probably be the Asics Nimbus if it was the neutral version we were looking at. You can also take a look at Adidas Energy Boost which may also have similarities with Adidas Supernova.

Summary

There are lots of advantages to the Adidas Supernova ST. Overall, I think the shoe is really good and since it covers a lot of segments, my assessment is that it will please a lot of people. Not least because of the name. Adidas has been really good at branding the name Supernova, which doesn’t just consist of running shoes. It’s an entire running collection.
Will the Supernovanova ST have many years in my running wardrobe? Well, it actually could. Because it’s a running shoe that’s super cool to step into. I can easily ignore the weight in the shoe, as I think it disappears a bit in the good comfort and return energy that is in the shoe.
So if you are looking for a running shoe with a high level of comfort and with room for many kilometers, I would definitely recommend taking a look at the Adidas Supernova ST (stable = pronation) or Adidas Supernova (neutral running style)
