Asics Cumulus 21 is launched

Asics Cumulus can do many things. It can, among other things, challenge the Asics Gel Nimbus to a dance. Yes, you heard right, Cumulus is not afraid to take on the challenge with what is probably the most popular model of running shoe in Denmark.

Asics Cumulus is a running shoe for the neutral runner. A running shoe that runners all over the world are really happy with. And for good reason, because it’s a damn good running shoe.

We have now come to the 21st version of Asics Cumulus. And what does it do compared to Asics Cumulus 20? It’s easy to answer. Pretty much the same..
It’s not the crazy revolutionary things that Asics has pulled out of its hat for this Asics Cumulus 21 version. But of course there have been some updates, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to change the version number.

The biggest change to the Asics Cumulus 21 is probably the heel area. The heel and instep have become higher and a bit tighter. This gives a slightly more stable fit, as you will feel that the shoe has a better grip on your foot overall..
The shoe has also become a little tighter around the foot, especially focusing on the forefoot. There you will notice that the mesh section is not quite as loose as it was before.

But if we look at technologies overall, the Asics Cumulus 21 has the same ones as in the Cumulus 20. We are still working with FlyteFoam Propel, which is this extremely soft material that is located at the top of the midsole. FlyteFoam is the lower part of the midsole. FlyteFoam is this unique and lightweight cushioning that Asics has had great success introducing in almost all of their models.
So, considering that the changes made to the Cumulus 21 are not huge, we would be very surprised if it does not become at least as successful as the Asics Cumulus 20. The shoe itself is certainly impressive.

What does the Asics Cumulus 20 offer?

Cumulus from Asics is a running shoe with many years (versions) behind it. This time we go from version 19 to version 20 of the Asics Cumulus. And the fact that we are so high up in the version numbers means that we already know that it is a running shoe that is loved by the people. Otherwise it would have been taken out of production a long time ago.
The Asics Cumulus 20 is the newest model in this series, but what are the differences from the previous version, the Asics Cumulus 19?

Just a little info about Asics Cumulus

Asics Cumulus is known in the technical language as the perfect little brother or sister of Asics Nimbus.

Asics Nimbus and Asics Cumulus both cover the neutral segment of runners. But the fact is that Cumulus is a lighter and more responsive running shoe, which means that you can actually, if you are a lighter runner, achieve a significant improvement by choosing Cumulus over Nimbus. Many people don’t know this, and that is why many take the safe option of choosing Nimbus every time.

The upper is markedly improved in the Asics Cumulus 20

Jacquard Stretch Mesh is the name of the new upper in the Asics Cumulus 20. An upper that is a significant improvement over the original upper that was in both the Asics Cumulus 18 and Cumulus 19.
The JMS upper is a 3-layer upper, where the inner layer is responsible for giving your feet the best experience in terms of support and support. The last 2 uppers form the outer part of the upper and ensure that your feet can breathe and feel fresh and fine at all times. Threads and the structure of the 2 outer layers mean that with a JMS upper you achieve fantastic ventilation.

The midsole has received a significant upgrade

Previously, Cumulus has been built on a “regular” EVA midsole. but those times are now (fortunately) over. The new midsole in Asics Cumulus is the very popular and praised FlyteFoam midsole. A midsole that stays whole and fresh throughout the run, and a midsole that is super responsive. The very energetic responsiveness is also due to the “propeller” in this new midsole on Asics Cumulus. It provides a fantastic bounce effect and a fantastic transition into the next step.

All in all, this upgrade of Cumulus from version 19 to version 20 is really an upgrade that is worth experiencing. Because wait, Asics has chosen to be picky about some very central points on the shoe. Our opinion about this is that Asics Cumulus is probably going to have an even bigger future. Especially if some dare to take the natural leap from Asics Nimbus to Asics Cumulus.

What was new in the Asics Gel-Cumulus 19?

Asics Gel-Cumulus has always been a bit of an underrated shoe in our opinion. Now Asics has released another updated version. Asics Gel Cumulus has been replaced by Asics Gel Cumulus 19.
This hasn’t made the running shoe a worse choice, quite the opposite. We have compared the Cumulus with the Asics Gel Nimbus,In this article you can read about the advantages and disadvantages of having a big brother and a little brother. You will be surprised.

When a new version of a running shoe comes out, when the number changes, all of us nerds sit with Christmas lights in our eyes, eagerly waiting to see what new features or updates the manufacturer has come up with. And it must be said that little has changed in the Asics Cumulus 19 compared to the Cumulus 18.

The headline for all the updates must be SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED RUNNING COMFORT. In the Cumulus 19, Asics has really put some effort into creating a shoe that is somewhat more comfortable to run in than its predecessor. And they have tweaked a few different points in the running shoe to make it succeed.

Better heel counter provides more comfort in Cumulus 19

The heel cap is one of the places where Asics has chosen to optimize this time. They have done it in Cumulus 19 compared to its predecessor Cumulus 18, that they have reduced the height of the heel a little. This provides better comfort in the sense that you do not feel the heel cap in the same way anymore. But still without it having lost any support and hold around your heel.

Asics Cumulus 19 has a better insole

There is also much better comfort inside the Cumulus 19. Here Asics has chosen to upgrade to a SpEVA 45 insole which gives you a much softer feeling as a runner. A softer landing and a better take-off.

Ortholite Sockliner has gotten better

The sockliner itself in the shoe has also been upgraded. Quite simply, just to provide a better fit throughout the shoe around your foot.

In addition, the Asics Cumulus 19 also has reduced seams on the shoe compared to the Cumulus 18. This means for runners that there are fewer places and less risk of chafing or other discomfort due to too noticeable seams.
Asics Cumulus 19 still has many of the good qualities that we have known in this model for many years. Full shock absorption throughout the entire length of the foot, Fluidride, Guidane line and the Asics Cumulus 19 has a drop of 10mm and an approx. 320 grams for a man.

What was new in the Asics Gel Cumulus 18

The previous models of the running shoe:

Another update to this classic from Asics has now hit the stores, and once again Asics is doing something good for runners.

Asics Cumulus has gotten a little boost. In this 18th edition, the cushioning in the shoe has been tweaked a little bit compared to its predecessor, the Asics Cumulus 17. So there is still a Fluidride 2.0 in the shoe’s midsole, and it helps make the shoe more cushioned and responsive. So runners who choose to run in the Asics Cumulus 18 will notice that the whole feeling of softness and cushioning has gotten a boost. It is more optimized in the Cumulus 18 compared to the Cumulus 17.

Asics still sees Cumulus as a ranking little brother or sister to Nimbus, and several tests actually show that if you are a lighter runner, the experience of running in Cumulus is better than running in Asics Nimbus. This is because Cumulus provides a different running experience as the midsole is lower. You get a lower run that seems more constant and straightforward. But if you are a “heavier” runner, then you may well have to look towards a Nimbus again, as you get some more cushioning in this running shoe.

Cumulus has a drop of 10mm, and is a middleweight in the running shoe category with approximately 305 grams for a size 9.

Asics Gel Cumulus 18 is still a running shoe that is mostly aimed at those of you who often run on asphalt. It can of course be used on gravel paths etc. as well. It is a mass training running shoe that falls into the category of “Value for money” running shoes. Much more about that later in my review. But in short, I think you get a lot for your money when you choose to buy the Cumulus shoe from Asics.

Test of Asics Gel Cumulus

First impressions are always important.

Let me say it up front – I’m not exaggerating when I say that I was so looking forward to getting into the Asics Gel Cumulus and then hitting the road. To put it bluntly, that’s just me. A mass training running shoe, for the road run. It should fit like a glove. But did it?

A review of this classic running shoe from Asics starts like any other. With the shoe being unpacked and you forming your first impression of the shoe. And is there anything better than the sight and smell of a brand new pair of running shoes? Asics makes some great running shoes, so this experience with the Asics Gel Cumulus was no exception. I was positive from the start. And that’s how a good review starts.

The shoes are unpacked, put on my feet, and then I’m ready for one of my road trips. The length of this trip was not determined from the start, but I can say this much that I added an extra 5 kilometers to the trip, both because the Asics Gel Cumulus is a good running shoe, but of course also because there’s always something cool about trudging off in a pair of brand new shoes.

Does it work even after many runs and lots of kilometers?

Now I have almost had my many trips in this Cumulus running shoe, and let me just point out now. The shoe clearly lives up to my expectations for a value for money running shoe. Asics has in this shoe a fantastic little brother to the Asics Gel Nimbus, and I get much the same experience with the Asics Cumulus when I run on the road. My assessment is that there are a lot of kilometers in the shoe, and it will easily (even if it is on hard ground) be able to handle +900 kilometers.

Running in Gel Cumulus From Asics must be said to be approved. I will definitely be able to spend many hours in this running shoe (if there were not so many others to test and try). It is my clear belief that I would easily be able to get a fantastic half marathon time in these shoes, combined with the feet feeling good. Where I would probably say that it would not be this shoe anyway on the 21 kilometer distance, it was the weight factor. There I think maybe Asics can optimize the Cumulus shoe a little more.

Shoe size – how to choose the best

Asics Gel Cumulus has a regular and standard running shoe size. It is no problem to find the right size Asics Noosa Tri, as you can safely use the size from your old running shoe to find the right size in Noosa Tri. However, be aware that it may feel a bit narrow in the forefoot, where the volume is on the lower end.

Analysis part 1: Who is the shoe aimed at?

Running style

Asics Gel Cumulus is primarily aimed at the runner with a neutral running style, or if you are one of the few who actually supinate when you run. This running shoe is not a lightweight in my eyes, and therefore probably not a competition running shoe. But that is against a sublime running shoe for you who train in quantity.

Fit

The fit in Cumulus is “normal” in the sense that there is nothing extra ordinary that you need to be aware of. Have you run in Asics running shoesbefore then the fit will be the same. You have to learn to live with the perfectly good fit around your foot.

In fine clothes

An asphalt running shoe. The structure and construction of the outsole are created to give you the best possible starting point when you choose to run on asphalt and or gravel paths.

Price level

If you choose to go to the store and buy the Asics Gel Cumulus right when it lands, the recommended price is 1200,- That’s not bad for this running shoe if you ask me. I think you get a lot of quality running shoes for the money. But if you wait a little while, I’m sure you can easily save a few hundred kroner.

Weight

Men’s weight: 306 grams in size 42

Women’s weight: 275 grams in size 39

Asics Gel Cumulus is at a level where I would say you have to choose a side. Should the running shoe be aimed at lightweights or do you want to target those who train a lot? But that doesn’t change my opinion that this running shoe is a fantastic alternative toAdidas Supernova Glide, Nike Air Max 90 orNew Balance 1080

Type of shoe

Asics is targeting the shoe at Mr. and Mrs. Denmark if you ask me. It’s a running shoe for the general public. It has a lot of things in its backpack. A reasonable cushioning, a nice design and lots of good Asics technologies

Durability

I would describe the Gel Cumulus as a running shoe with reasonable durability. The outsole and upper are made of really good materials – and if you stick to the instructions, you have a running shoe for many kilometers. The outsole / outsole does not wear out easily, and the shock absorption inside the shoe is also very difficult to “kill”. The only downside is their heel construction as mentioned earlier. But Asics is constantly working on improving that.

Analysis part 2: Structure

Outsole

A “Solid Rubber Outsole” is what gives you a fantastic lifespan on your outsole. It means it can withstand a lot of beatings, and you have an outsole for many kilometers.

Midsole

The Asics Gel Cumulus features both Speva 45 and Fluidride midsole technologies from Asics. All of this makes you feel amazingly comfortable in this soft running shoe.

Heel

Asics is known for their softness – and in Cumulus it is no exception. It is in the heel area that this happens. A huge Gel cushion has been placed in the heel which gives you the best (and softest) landing and a sensible push-off when you need to continue with your stride.

Forefoot

The forefoot of the Gel Cumulus is equipped with a good Gel shock absorption cushion that ensures a soft and comfortable take-off every time you take a step.

Upper part

A seamless upper that ensures you a very high level of comfort. When we talk about seamless uppers, we are also talking about a reduced risk of discomfort when you are out on the road. And NO runners have anything against that.

Inside

The shoe has a removable sockliner inside. This gives you a much better environment inside the shoe, and much better hygiene. This way you can better ventilate and clean your running shoes.

Outside:

The shoe is equipped with 3M reflectors for better safety when running in the dark. Safety is important – and we can’t have too much of that.

Differences in women’s and men’s Gel Cumulus

When we talk about the Asics Gel Cumulus review, we must keep in mind that the review is based on a rather large model of Cumulus. There are of course differences between the men’s and women’s models of the Asics Gel Cumulus.

Asics Cumulus women’s running shoes

The women’s version of the Asics Cumulus is pretty much the same as when I look at my own men’s version. Of course, there are just the small adjustments that need to be made. Women’s running shoes are usually always in different color combinations, which are more aimed at the feminine side. And then there are some more technical differences….

Difference in Asics Gel Cumulus for men and women

In the vast majority of cases, there is a difference between men and women in the structure – and thus also how your running shoes should react. That is why you will often see that there are larger Gel pads in Asics men’s running shoes. They receive a different load. Another obvious difference is how the running shoe is built in width. There is what is called a men’s last and a girls’ last. A girls’ running shoe will typically always be a little narrower in structure.

So my assessment is that you can easily find a reasonable and good discount the next time you buy a pair of Asics Gel Cumulus. And it doesn’t matter if it’s in a physical store or you buy them online.

When there is a sale in the stores – the Asics Cumulus is often part of that sale. It is a model that comes again and again, and therefore the stores have to be good at making room for new colors and upgrades. So you will definitely find the Cumulus on sale.

Cumulus is part of a family….

It is well known among runners that the Cumulus model has always been considered the little brother.

Many runners have shown it for years, and that is also Asics’ own interpretation. That the Asics Gel Cumulus is a little brother or sister to the Asics Gel Nimbus. There are a lot of similarities in these 2 shoes, and they are aimed at the same running style. Of course, there is a difference between the 2 shoes, and that is also in terms of price. But if you are not ready to pay more for an Asics Nimbus, then the Gel Cumulus can be a fantastic alternative.

Comparison

As previously described, there are some versions from some of the other running brands that are for direct comparison. We are talking about a number of “Value for money” running shoes here. And if we are to make the direct comparison, then a Nike Zoom Vomero or one New Balance 890 could meet your needs.

Summary

If anyone is in doubt, I am a fan of the Asics Gel Cumulus. It is a shoe that appeals to a lot of runners. Not only in terms of running style, but also in terms of the general look and price. As mentioned before, it is a shoe with lots of good technologies, and when you put that up against the price. Then it is an equation that makes sense to me. So the Cumulus from Asics gets a big thumbs up from me.
