Asics Gel Kayano 27 – what to expect

That Asics Kayano is a sublime classic probably comes as a surprise to few. If you are a runner and have followed them minimally, you have heard Asics Kayano mentioned at one time or another. Simply because it has been on the market for so long, and is among so many runners the preferred choice when it comes to choosing a running shoe for mass training.
Now the Asics Gel Kayano 26 is facing a replacement. It steps up a size, becoming the Asics Gel Kayano 27, and what does that mean for you?

You could give the short version and say that it means better and more well-thought-out comfort for you as a runner. But if we dig a little deeper, there are of course some headlines and explanations for these updates.

The upper of the shoe, which has been updated in most updates over the last 5 versions, has once again received a minor update. More air for the feet means cooler feet, and thus better and higher comfort.

The midsole has received minor adjustments. The material as a whole has become a bit softer, so the Asics Kayano 27 is softer to run in than the Asics Gel Kayano 26 was. The midsole and the general cushioning still consist of FlyteFoam, FlyteFoam propeller and of course the soft gel pads in both the forefoot and heel. But this entire structure has been changed a bit in the Kayano 27, so that everything feels softer, but still just as stable.

The last change we highlight in the Asics Kayano 27 is the modified and optimized “grooves” on the outsole. They are cut a little deeper, making the whole experience feel more supple and light.

So all in all, it’s not huge changes like we’ve seen before on a classic running shoe like the Asics Kayano, but a number of small updates that all go towards better running comfort for the individual runner.
Asics Gel Kayano is still an ultra-cool mass training running shoe that is aimed at the pronated runner, as it has stability units on the inside of the sole (counteracts pronation). Asics Kayano has taken the running world by storm many times, and although version 27 does not contain revolutionary updates, we predict Asics Kayano 27 to be as big a success as most of its 26 predecessors.

The Asics Kayano 26 is another masterpiece – or is it?

As we’ve written many times, there’s no doubt that when a running shoe enters its 26th edition, it’s because it’s capable of something. The previous 25 editions haven’t been bad, quite the opposite.
Asics Gel Kayano is practically known by 99% of Danish runners – and a large percentage of these have also tried running in a pair of Asics Kayano from time to time.

Now we have come to the conclusion that the Asics Gel Kayano 25 will be replaced by the Asics Gel Kayano 26. And it is always exciting when the most popular running shoes change sizes. Because what is going to happen? What has the manufacturer, in this case Asics, dared to touch and change?

Protect every step you take,This is how the title of the Asics Gel Kayano 26 can be freely translated. Asics has launched the Kayano 26 under the theme “How to protect every step” And that title alone is promising for what awaits us. The very foundation of the Asics Kayano has of course not been touched. So it is still this running shoe that belongs at the top of the scale at Asics, and which protects against pronation. With this update we are sure that it will not fall down the scale in any case.

One of the few drawbacks that the predecessor Asics Kayano 25 turned out to have was the space for the toes. You could sense that there was perhaps a little too little space for the toes. Personally, it was especially when I had run +10 kilometers in the shoe that I could feel this minor irritation. This has been corrected in Asics Kayano 26. It has a larger (both in height and width) toe box so there is now a little better space for your toes.

Softness has been a huge focus. We believe that when we look at the new Asics Gel Kayano 26 from the outside in. There are several updates in this model that make the shoe softer and more springy. Among other things, Asics has added Gel in both the forefoot and the heel. But where you might notice the biggest difference is in the midsole.
There we are dealing with the same structure as we had in the Asics Kayano 25, and yet some parameters have been optimized. But the thinking has been the same. The midsole in the Asics Kayano 26 still consists of a combination of FlyteFoam Lyte and FlyteFoam Propel. And it is the latter material that you will experience in the Asics Kayano 26 that has become more. It may be difficult for the ordinary eye to see this update, but you will definitely be able to feel it. This means that you get a softer experience with the shoe, and in fact the shoe’s midsole also delivers more back to you every time you take off.

Asics Kayano 26 has added more GEL in the heel and forefoot

Asics Gel Kayano 26 has a softer, but still equally stable heel counter

Asics Gel Kayano 26 has more FlyteFoam Propel in the midsole

Asics Gel Kayano 26 is still a running shoe for the pronating runner

In addition, there are other small updates to the shoe. Among other things, the insole has been optimized a bit so that you follow your feet better. It’s not the biggest update in the world, but it’s still just an update to the shoe that makes the experience even more complete and unique..
If the Asics Kayano 25, with its small flaws, was such a big success, then we predict a really big future for the Asics Gel Kayano 26. It is truly a complete shoe with lots of cool details and lots of softness. A fantastic combination.

Watch a video explaining the many updates that the Asics Kayano 26 contains compared to the Asics Kayano 25.

Asics Kayano 25, what did it have to offer?

When you say Asics Gel Kayano, you also say heavyweight in running shoes. Not because it is significantly heavy, but probably more because it is strong. A running shoe that has been in the industry for so many years, and is sold in the numbers that it is (DK). Such a shoe deserves respect. That is why it is always super exciting for running nerds like me when Asics is about to launch a new version number. Because how much have they dared to tinker with, and how much has been retained. Every time a running shoe gets a new version number, there are updates. That goes without saying, because otherwise it could just keep the old number. But it is always exciting whether it is BIG heavy updates, or just minor adjustments.

In relation to the fact that the Asics Kayano 24 is now becoming the Kayano 25, I dare say that we are dealing with some rather heavy, and for a manufacturer, very dangerous elements of the shoe when it comes to updates. Both the midsole, upper and outsole have been given a makeover. And in fact, the Kayano 25 has gone a bit against the grain and become heavier. It is always the case that you always try to cut weight, but measured in grams, the Asics Kayano 25 is heavier than the Asics Kayano 24. There are reasons for this, and it is most likely not something you notice. There is also an explanation for this..
In addition, there are a lot of personal spots that I think are different. For example, I think the shoe has a much more solid look, it doesn’t look as “sloppy” as the Kayano 24. But that’s probably basically due to the updates.

But let’s start with the smallest of the major updates. GREBETin the outsole. In fact, it is not a material update, but more of a design update. The material is exactly the same, namely AHAR+, but they have chosen to design the fields at the bottom of the shoe a little differently, and this should provide better grip.

Then there’s the big update of MIDSOLE. And here you should be happy. This is probably part of the explanation why the shoe is sharper in my eyes, and why the Asics Kayano feels lighter even though it is heavier..
Some of the GEL material in the midsole that you know from Asics, and which has been a hallmark throughout the years, has been removed. It has been replaced with FlyteFoam. That material was also used in the Asics Kayano 24, but in the 25th version it has a double effect. At the bottom it is FlyteFoam Lyte, and on top of this Asics has added FlyteFoam Propal. Flytefoam Lyte, and thus also the double effect, is only found in the rear part of the shoe. But FlyteFoam Propal is in both the front and back of the shoe. The material gives the Asics Kayano 25 much more bounce effect, and thus gives you a faster take-off. Therefore, one can easily argue that the shoe seems “faster, more flexible, lighter” even though it is actually heavier.
I’m especially looking forward to seeing and hearing how this update with the midsole is received. I’m a fan, but if you’re a “kayano runner” you should probably prepare yourself for it to be a little different.

Your toes are in focus with the new Asics Kayano 25. The upper has been given a bit of an overhaul. More room for the toes, and the mesh material has been upgraded. It is a Jacquard Mesh that is used for the upper, and it gives a fantastic feeling of air and freedom. Combined with the more room for the toes, I definitely think that this is the update where I get “the most for my money”
The midsole is the biggest update on the Asics Kayano 25 because it is such a central element of the shoe, but when I look at myself and ask myself which upgrade has the best effect for me, it is the improved upper. The midsole, after all, is where I was used to world-class cushioning, even without the new measures. Upper updates give me a “different feeling”

And as we always end with in a version update, the Asics Gel Kayano 25 is of course the same running shoe as it has always been when we take a look at the more general terms and lines. It is still a by definition clear volume training running shoe. It is still aimed at the over-pronating runner, and it still belongs to the absolute top within running shoes. Both internally at Asics, but indeed also generally seen across all brands. It has been represented there for many, many years.
Many technologies, such as MetaClutch (heel cap), are still available, there is still this soft feeling when you step into the shoe, and there is also still the same pronation wedge in the shoe.

What was new in the Asics Kayano 24?

Asics Kayano has reached its 24th edition. And I’m sure many runners are really excited about what it can do. Asics Kayano 24 naturally replaces the 23rd edition of the shoe. And let’s be clear from the start, you shouldn’t expect the same revolutionary results in Asics Kayano 24 as there were in Asics Kayano 23.

The Kayano 23 has actually been very well received – and now it may sound like it was a completely different shoe when you went from 22 to 23, but it wasn’t. There were just a few pretty significant changes in the Asics Kayano 23. These were technologies that proved to hold water (I didn’t expect anything else from Asics either) and therefore there are a lot of things in the Asics Kayano 24 that are similar to number 23.

But of course there has been a bit of a change, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to change the version number. That’s one of the really cool things about Asics and in this case the Kayano running shoe, they don’t have a reputation for changing a running shoe just for the sake of changing it. They only do it if they can see that it will give the runner a clear improvement. That’s the right approach to things if you ask me. But what have they changed on the Asics Kayano 24 compared to the Asics Kayano 23.

The heel has improved in the Kayano 24

This is probably where the biggest upgrade has taken place. The heel has always been an issue on Asics running shoes. For many, many years, Asics has struggled with heel areas that did not quite live up to expectations. But they have come a long way in their development, and that is why the Asics Kayano 24 will now also be wearing the MetaClutch heel cap. An optimized and new heel cap from Asics that gives you a more stable hold, a softer feel and it is not quite as high as previous heel caps have been on Asics running shoes. Here you will definitely be able to feel a significant difference, you should look forward to that.

The lacing system has been optimized

The lacing system has been slightly improved. It has been optimized very slightly, but it is now easier to get the shoe to fit even better around the foot. You get the opportunity for a more individual fit.

Kayano number 24 is more spacious

There is a little more space in the forefoot. This means that there is less risk of your toes being too close and getting pinched. I am personally one of those who had a little bit of trouble in the Asics Kayano 23 in terms of my toes feeling perfectly fine in terms of getting pinched. So this is clearly an optimization of the comfort in the Asics Kayano 24.
Some will definitely find that they “fit their true size” again in the Kayano 24. That was the effect of a slightly narrow forefoot in the Kayano 23. Some may have felt the shoe was a bit too small, and tried going up half a size. Now in the Kayano 24 you can trust the size better.

There are still all the good technologies in the Asics Kayano 24

Just to recap. All the great technologies and major updates that came in the Asics Kayano 23 are of course still to be found in the 24th edition. You still get a FlyteFoam midsole which is the best midsole Asics offers right now. There is still an upper in FluidFit which is this extremely soft and comfortable upper that fits right into your foot and provides a very high level of comfort.
There is a 10mm drop, it weighs approximately 315 grams in size 42 and it is still made for him or her who loves a good solid running shoe for a lot of running.

The Kayano 22 is being replaced by the Asics Kayano 23

Asics Gel Kayano has over time become a running shoe heavy on technology. Don’t be sad about that. Everything is to your advantage as a runner. Every detail is thought out so that you as a runner have a better experience.

Some years there are a few slip-ups in some models from Asics because they have just made major changes. However, that is not the case with the Asics Gel Kayano 23 (and 22). They make few GOOD changes to the shoe. And almost every year they manage to make a world-class running shoe just that little bit better.

What’s new in the Kayano 23, and is there anything great to look forward to in this classic from Asics?
The only thing to say is: rejoice, this will be a success.

When Asics launched the Asics Kayano 22 back in 2015, it was a bit of a shock as the running shoe that everyone knows and loves was facing a completely new re-launch. The Kayano 22 has been very well received in the past year, and now it’s time for version 23 in the Kayano running shoe line.

So what does this Kayano 23 offer? It is a running shoe that is built according to exactly the same principles as the Kayano 22. It is the same thinking, and the same thing you want to achieve. However, you have just made an already sharp running shoe a little sharper. You have looked at how the Asics Kayano 22 has performed in its approximately 1 year long lifespan, and then you have optimized based on this.

So what do you get in the Asics Kayano 23 compared to number 22 in the same series.

More flexible pronation support

A “complaint” if you can call this part that, has been the pronation support in the Kayano 22. Asics has also been in there and optimized this time around. They have made it so that the pronation wedge in the Kayano 23 now provides a little more support. This is mostly aimed at the moderately pronating runner.

Optimized heel cap / heel section

A place where Kayano has taken a beating over the years, well actually it’s not just Kayano, but Asics running shoes in general, but the heel cap or heel area has always been a sore point on running shoes from Asics. They have also tried to optimize that in Kayano 23. Only time will tell if the durability will improve, but at least in Kayano 23 they have done something to optimize the fit, and it could easily result in the heel area of the shoe lasting longer.

The midsole will be amazing

Asics has chosen to make a pretty wild update to the midsole in the Kayano 23. It is now an Asics FlyteFoam midsole which not only makes the running shoe more responsive, but also makes the midsole a lot lighter than its predecessor. FlyteFoam is a material that replaces the standard EVA midsole, and there is a significant difference in the material. The fibers in FlyteFoam give you a much more consistent run, the same takeoff every time, and overall a more “flying” feeling.
Strangely enough, this weight reduction will not be visible on the total weight of the Asics Kayano 23. You will still have a running shoe that weighs around 330 grams in a size US9. So making the midsole lighter does not directly affect the weight of the entire shoe, which we think is a bit of a shame. But the good thing is of course that the shoe has not become heavier, and you will get a much better experience.

A top you’ll love

When Asics made a completely new upper for the Kayano (version 22) back in 2015 and put it all to the test, there were a lot of people who waited with longing. A wait that was worth it. In the Kayano 23, this upper – which users have received very well, by the way – has just been refined a little more. A different and better hold has been made over the foot, so you get a slightly better fit and more optimized support. It is perfect for those runners who get tired and heavy legs on longer distances. The upper is of course still seamless.

Iloebesko predicts a great future for the new Kayano 23 from Asics. When you look at how far its predecessor Kayano 22 has come in just under a year. You get some really cool updates in this 23rd edition that your feet will definitely love. So if you are used to running in Asics Kayano, then number 23 will also be a hit for you. And remember that Kayano is probably the running shoe of choice for the most road distances. It can cover everything from 3km to a marathon

One thing that not What is new is the fit and the size selection. I and a number of other runners have tested the shoe. The conclusion is clear: you must have the same size as in the previous models.

My test of the Asics Gel Kayano

asics gel kayanoThis review (which was very in-depth) is based on my testing of the Asics Gel Kayano in its latest version.

I have also run in the previous models.

Based on these tests, I have made a summary of how I think the shoe is.

I would say that I have an extremely good basis for comparison. I have tested more running shoes than most, and I have been running in Kayano for many years.

I have made several video reviews that you can see here on the site and by browsing around.

First impressions

review by kayanoIt’s a bit unfair to give a first-hand impression of the shoe when I’ve been running with it for more than 10 years. But the latest version seems lighter and more compact than the previous models.

I always look forward to stepping into the Asics Kayano. I know the fit is sublime. This time is no exception. When my foot is in the shoes, the shoe fits my feet like a mold.

I had just been out running hill intervals the day before, but I quickly got into my running gear and tested out the first run. Despite sore legs, it was a pleasant and very positive experience.

The size fits, just like in the previous models.

gel kayano soleI can feel that the shoe has become a little lighter. Apart from the weight, I can’t feel much difference between this shoe and the previous version. However, that’s no shame, as the last version was also an excellent running shoe.

After 1100 km of running training

It’s now been 1100 km since I took the first steps. I’ve been using the shoes for a long time (I alternate between different running shoes to reduce the strain on my feet).

I am very pleased with the durability of the shoes, which this time lasted 1100 kilometers. I have previously reviewed the shoe where they have lasted up to 1300 kilometers, but on average the durability has been around 1000 kilometers, which is a general “best before” date for running shoes that are built well.

asics kayano testWhen I test shoes like Asics Gel Kayano, I pay close attention to how the shoes are after they have been through a lot of challenges. Even though the upper is starting to break down, I think the durability has been really good.

I haven’t treated them optimally and yet they have lasted many kilometers. For example, I have washed the Asics Kayano running shoes twice in the washing machine and run with them in all kinds of weather. They last. Read more about cleaning, caring for and washing running shoes in this article..

If you have run in the previous shoe and are considering switching to the new one, you shouldn’t worry about whether the fit is the same. I (and the other test runners) can conclude that it is.

What do other runners say about the shoe?

In this section you can read what other runners have said about testing the Asics Gel Kayano. I go into a lot of depth in my review, but it’s always good to get a second opinion when assessing how good a running shoe is. I think the runners have been extremely satisfied.

Karina Hansen, olstykke. Runs 30-40 km/week

  • I switch between Gel Kayano and GT (also from Asics). I think Kayano is the best –Karina Hansen, olstykke. Runs 30-40 km/week

Lars Storm Nielsen, Copenhagen NV. Runs +60 km/week

  • I use Kenyano as my everyday running shoe. I run many kilometers a week, and it is therefore important for me to have a running shoe that gives me good and comfortable cushioning. More than 60% of my running training is in Kenyano. The rest are intervals and tempo runs, which I run in lighter running shoes. Although Kenyano has become lighter, it is by no means a light running shoe. –Lars Storm Nielsen, Copenhagen NV. Runs +60 km/week

Britta Skott Hansen, Skanderborg. Runs +30 km/week

  • For me, Kayano is the perfect choice. I've been training in them since the 10th edition. Yes, there have been good and bad models, but overall I've been very satisfied. The shoes fit my foot like clockwork. I know people say you should look at running style, underfoot and many other factors when buying new running shoes, but for me the most important thing is how the shoe fits. Asics Gel Kayano fits perfectly. I can't imagine another shoe fitting better. –Britta Skott Hansen, Skanderborg. Runs +30 km/week

Ib Andersen, Skaelskor. Hyggelober

  • Running shoes for life. I don't run much, but for Silvan, these running shoes are just world class. –Ib Andersen, Skaelskor. Hyggelobs

I have also collected information from other runners and what the general opinion is about Gel Kayano.

asics gel kayano review

Which size should you choose?

You should buy Asics Kayano in a normal size for running shoes. If you are a size 43 in normal shoes, you should buy 43.5 in Asics Kayano. The same applies to other “normal” running shoes. Most Asics shoes fit the same size, however, their lighter running shoes are a bit small in size, which is why they should be bought half a size larger.

I have also included what others have said about the size as you can see from the figure below.

asics gel kayano size and fit

If you are converting a size from a previous brand and are unsure of what size to get, you can try my size guide. running shoe size guide. Alternatively, you can see a overview of Asics sizes in US, UK, EU and CM. So you can convert the different sizes internally within Asics.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

Eminent fit

My review of the Asics Gel Kayano reflects in every way that I am extremely satisfied with the fit. The shoe fits me perfectly. It is my impression that runners who run in the Kayano primarily choose the shoe because of the formidable fit. I have not yet tried other running shoes with as good comfort as this one. Big plus from here. 5 stars.

Better functions in the upper part

The upper in the Kayano 22 has received a bit of a boost. You get a lot of things in the upper. Both that it is seamless, but also that your feet can breathe in a completely different way. Previous models have been a bit too closed, but the Kayano 23 gives you improved ventilation.

Reduced weight

The fact that the weight has been reduced slightly is an advantage. The fact that it has happened on the basis of a changed choice of material is a huge plus. Running shoes are sometimes promoted as having become lighter, but if this is due to a reduced focus on cushioning or comfort, it is irrelevant that the shoes have become lighter. With the Gel Kayano, they have become lighter because the choice of material has been optimized. I like that.

Disadvantages

The heel goes up.

A big minus of the Asics Kayano is that the heel tends to roll up. It is the fabric inside the shoe that rolls up. The reason why this happens is the very compact fit. The heel sits incredibly close to the Achilles tendon. It is extremely comfortable, but it also means that the shoes often wear out here. You can avoid the problem by loosening your shoes extremely much before you take them off. I loosen mine unnaturally much to avoid the problem.

The outer part of the heel lacks support

This is not a problem I have personally noticed, but I have read that some people find that the outside of the heel does not provide enough support.

The upper part fits snugly

Not a point that will be a disadvantage for everyone. But there are certainly some who will say that the Kayano 23 now has a too tight upper. But just as reviews are individual, so are opinions about running shoes.

Why you should buy Asics Kayano

There are many reasons why you should buy Asics Gel Kayano.

  • Asics Gel Kayano is one of the most technologically advanced running shoes on the market.
  • You can easily find cheap Asics Kayano. Just look at the big savings here on this page.
  • The shoe is durable and has a long shelf life.
  • You don’t compromise on safety and damage.
  • Asics Kayano is an excellent all-round shoe.

Asics-Kayano-22

Analysis part 1: Who is the shoe aimed at?

Running style

Asics Gel Kayano is for light or moderate pronation running style.

However, I also know a number of runners with a neutral running style who have had good experiences with Kayano. However, it is not something I recommend.

If you have a neutral running style, you should choose the broderie, Asics Gel Nimbus. You can read a little about the eternal showdown between Kayano and Nimbus on runnersworld forum.

If you fall outwards (supination), you should not run in the Asics Gel Kayano, but a completely different running shoe. An example from Asics could be The Gel Kinsei shoe.

Not everyone can run in the Asics Gel Kayano without problems, and you should be aware of that. As an alternative, you can take a look at Asics GT 1000, 2000 or 3000, which I have also reviewed. The shoes are similar. The GT is a bit cheaper.

Fit

The fit is excellent. Personally, it’s the best-fitting running shoe I’ve ever run in.

Here’s a little bit about the fit.

  • Heel: regular fit
  • Midfoot: normal fit
  • Forefoot: normal / slightly wide fit
  • Toe height: normal or slightly low
  • Arch structure: normal
  • Shoe shape: semi-curved

The semi-curved shape of the shoe means that if you place the shoe on a flat surface, it will curve slightly. This helps to give you a pleasant roll from heel to forefoot. If you want optimal comfort, a semi-curved shoe shape is preferable.

In fine clothes

asics kayano turquoiseIf you run on asphalt, the Asics Gel Kayano is the shoe for you.

As you can read more about in the technical analysis of the shoe, the shoe is best on asphalt, firm gravel, pavement, bike paths, etc. The shock absorption is good and the grip is best on firm surfaces.

Price level

Gel Kayano is a good running shoe. 1500 DKK in recommended retail price is a lot of money.

Fortunately, not all places require you to pay full price.

Buy Gel Kayano online and you can easily find them cheap compared to physical stores that charge full price.

The physical stores have higher costs, while they are pressured by suppliers to keep prices at a fixed level. If the price level drops, it destroys the brand, while it benefits you and me, who are going out shopping for new running shoes.

Weight

At around 300-320 grams, the Asics Kayano has gradually become a lighter everyday running shoe. I clearly remember the shoe weighing +350 grams, which is normal for many other everyday running shoes. Asics has cut down on weight by choosing new materials for the construction of everything from the upper to the midsole and outsole.

A few grams can make a big difference to your performance.

Type of shoe

The Asics Gel Kayano is a mass training running shoe (mass-training-running-shoe). That’s a long word.

This means that the shoe is best for long kilometers and leisurely runs.

The reason why the shoe falls into this category is that it has excellent shock absorption, good comfort and relatively high weight.

If you are going to run extremely fast (for example, set a personal record of 5km or 10km), then I recommend that you instead look at competition running shoes, for example the lightweight DS Racer from Asics, which I personally also have good experiences with.

Drops and heights on the forefoot and heel

asics kayano orangeThe height difference from heel to forefoot has become smaller over the years.

The difference is currently 10 mm, but because the heel and forefoot levels are still very high, the Asics Kayano is by no means a running shoe for those who want to train natural running or forefoot and midfoot landing. You will most likely land on your heel when training in the Asics Kayano.

If you want to practice midfoot or forefoot landing, you need to get a different pair of running shoes with a lower drop. You can see here an overview of more naturalistic running shoes.

Analysis part 2: Technical structure

Asics Kayano is packed with promising technology.Click here to Asics website. Here you can read about the technology used. It’s a bit technical, so I won’t go into detail here.

Some of the technologies used in the Asics Kayano go back several years, while others are newer. This is something Asics should be commended for. They rarely make a bad running shoe, although it cannot be completely avoided.

In this section, I look at the construction of the shoe and (hopefully) explain in an understandable way what it means for you as a runner.

The outsole

outsole kayanoThe outsole is crucial for what surface your shoes perform best on. Asics Gel Kayano is clearly preferable for running on asphalt and firm gravel. Many use the shoe as an all-round shoe for training and competition on different surfaces, but as a nerd, I have to mention that it is a shoe for harder surfaces. The shoe has nothing to do with trail running or other running outside the marked and safe routes.

The outsole comes with AHAR, which is an abbreviation for Asics High Abrasion Rubber. Few people know what it means. Quite simply, AHAR is a rubber that has proven to be extremely durable, even after 1000 km.

In addition, the outsole comes with DuraSponge. DuraSponge is primarily located in the forefoot, and gives you a responsive push-off from the outsole combined with good flexibility in terms of changing direction.

Midsole

complete review kayanoThe midsole (where the primary cushioning is) is made of Fluidride. Fluidride is much more durable than previously used technology. In addition, Fluidride provides 20% better bounce than previous midsoles. Last but not least, the material weighs 15% less. It’s win, win, win.

Heel

In the heel you will find the strongest cushioning of the midsole. The midsole extends in the Asics Kayano all the way from the heel to the outer part of the forefoot. The cushioning is strongest in the heel.

In the heel, midfoot and forefoot you will find Impact Guidance System (IGS), which is a technology designed to give you a balanced roll from heel to forefoot. It is a technology from Asics that guides your foot in the best direction.

Midfoot

The midfoot is where the support and transition from heel to forefoot is located. Asics supports your feet with the Guidance Trusstic System, which is a lightweight material that gives you the best stability. Without this technology, you would be skating around (I exaggerate).

Additionally, there is the Dynamic DuoMax Support System in the midfoot. It reduces your pronation by controlling the movements of the foot, leading to a smoother and more comfortable movement from landing on the heel to taking off on the forefoot.

Forefoot

As mentioned under the outsole description, there is DuraSponge in the forefoot which gives you a good and comfortable kick. The forefoot also comes with Guidance Line, which is a vertical feature that gives the forefoot the most efficient rollout.

Upper part

gel kayano upperThe upper comes with Fluidfit technology. It is an extra strong and extra stretchable mesh, which gives you the best conditions for good ventilation and optimal comfort. Compared to previously used technologies for the upper, Fluidfit is multi-stretchable. This means that the material can be stretched in all directions, where it was previously only 2 dimensional. If you have previously had problems with the upper breaking, the risk of this will be significantly reduced with this upgrade.

The Fluidfit technology provides glove-like comfort. This means that the shoe fits snugly to your foot.

Difference between women’s and men’s version

In general, there is not much difference between the Asics Gel Kayano for women and men. Basically, the two shoes are the same. However, there are a few differences that you should be aware of if you as a man are considering buying the women’s model, or if you as a woman are considering buying the men’s model.

The primary difference is in the width of the shoes. The Kayano women’s is a bit narrower (especially in the heel area). As for the length of the shoes, they are equally “long”. So a 42.5 in men’s is the same as a 42.5 in women’s.

Buy Kayano on sale or discount

Asics Gel Kayano the king of running shoesThe recommended retail price for Asics Kayano is 1600 kroner, but you can save a lot of money by buying it on the Danish internet market. See retailers and prices in the table on this page. You can click directly to the different retailers of Asics Gel Kayano. The table is sorted by where you get the biggest savings. This top performance running shoe is primarily aimed at pronating runners. If you have light pronation, moderate pronation or heavy pronation, you can safely buy it.

Few people buy the shoe at full retail price. The vast majority buy Asics Kayano on sale. Around the world you can save +500 kroner by buying this running shoe online instead of in physical stores. Now it’s not all about price, but if you’ve run in the shoe before, there’s no need to bother going to a physical store when you can order online. Buy Asics Kayano on sale or on sale. This applies to men or women, so you can find good prices.

The Asics Kayano has surpassed its predecessor with a number of changes. This is what makes the Kayano one of the best running shoes in the world. If the running shoe is not constantly developed, other models and brands will overtake it.

Alternatives to Asics Gel Kayano

If you would like to supplement your running training with other running shoes to reduce uniform pressure on your feet, I recommend you take a look at the beautiful Nike Zoom Vomero running shoe. Zoom Vomero will be a good choice for you if you are in the lighter weight class or normal weight class. Nike Vomero is a good all-round running shoe that you can use for different purposes.

Are you a heavier runner who needs maximum support and comfort? NB 1260 (New Balance) is an excellent choice. The shoe has good comfort (in my opinion, not as good as Kayano), and gives you strong cushioning and arch support to dampen your pronation.

From the same brand, Asics, I would recommend Asics GT series (mainly GT 2000). GT is a value for money running shoe where Kayano is a premium running shoe. So don’t expect quite the same quality. I personally like to switch between Kayano and GT, and I know that many other runners do too. It varies the load and reduces the risk of injury. So if you are into Asics, these are the two shoes you should have.

Lastly, I would recommend Saucony Guide as an alternative. Whether you take the trail version or the normal version, the fit and characteristics of the two shoes are very similar.

Summary

Asics Gel Kayano is a king running shoe. It is my favorite running shoe for runners with pronation, who run on asphalt and who want maximum cushioning. Of course, there are runners who want ultra-light running shoes, and the Kayano is not the best choice for them. For those of you who are training for a marathon, half marathon or your first 10 kilometers, the Gel Kayano is an excellent running shoe that gives you the best comfort you can imagine.

I can definitely recommend the Asics Gel Kayano!

Price comparison KAYANO 24

Below is a price comparison of the Asics Kayano 24. A running shoe that was launched in the fall of 2016 (more specifically 1/9-2016), the Kayano 24 faced the big challenge of having to “lift the legacy” of the wildly popular Asics Kayano 23. And it must be said that all tests and reviews point in that direction. Asics has once again created an insanely good, popular and almost perfect running shoe.
