What’s new in the 3rd edition of Lyte33
The latest edition in the Gel Lyte33 series from Asics. I have tested the shoe from start to finish and share my review here. Watch the video for a quick overview, delve into the Asics Gel Lyte33 3 review or jump straight to the best deal: (Produktet er udgået) DKK by(Produktet er udgået).
Overall, the Asics Gel Lyte33 3 is an excellent shoe for those who want to experiment with natural running and midfoot or forefoot landing. The drop is only 5-6 mm and the shoes weigh only 201 grams in the men’s model and 165 grams in the women’s model. It is a light shoe that I recommend primarily for fast runs.
The Asics Lyte 33 3 has many of the same elements that I loved about the V2 version, despite the weight being significantly reduced.
The sole dimensions are more or less the same for heel and forefoot height.
The weight loss comes primarily from a new upper and a thinner outsole.
In addition, the midsole (read more about it later) has been constructed from 100% Solyte, where SpEVA was previously also used.
The 3rd edition has plenty of room all around. In fact, it feels like there is a bit more room in the Asics Gel Lyte33 3 than in the Asics Gel Lyte33 2 and 1.
The forefoot in particular has plenty of space, so if you have a wide forefoot, the Asics Gel Lyte33 3 will be an obvious choice if you also want a low drop and low weight in your running shoes.
The new upper is lighter and more breathable than before. My primary concern with the otherwise good news with the new upper is that the material choice can be weak in the flex points at the forefoot. When you push off the ground, the shoe typically folds about 1-2 cm from where the toes begin. With the material choice you see in the Gel Lyte 33 3, you may find that the shoes break up here after many kilometers and very aggressive takeoffs.
Overall, I am extremely happy with the update to the 3rd edition of the shoe. The Asics Gel Lyte33 3 has truly been upgraded.
Please note that the 3rd edition is the same in terms of size (length, width, fit). If you have run in the 2nd edition, don’t hesitate to buy the 3rd edition when it comes to fit.

My test of the Asics Gel Lyte33
I have no incentive to make an unnatural review of the shoe. While the video was informative, my review is as subjective as possible. Keep in mind that my test and review are most useful for runners who are similar to me. Buying running shoes is individual. Watch my video to get an overview of the shoe.
First impressions
Fierce colors. I like. Also, the latest version is not nearly as clunky as the older models. At first I didn’t like the Asics Gel Lyte33 precisely because of the look, but I definitely think the latest version has had an overhaul.
The shoes are a bit lighter than I expected. If you look at pictures of the shoes you don’t think they are as light as they feel when you hold them in your hands. You should be happy. The heel is not as compact as in Asics premium running shoes. Therefore you may want to consider using a lace lock (link to lacing techniques) to get a compact fit around the heel.
The shoes fit perfectly. I started with a 16 km run including 3x1300m intervals and 4x430m intervals. The stride on grass (I often run intervals on grass to reduce the risk of injury) was excellent. I didn’t experience any slipping in the shoes. However, there are better shoes for grass (especially if the grass is wet). My warm-up was extra long to see if I could feel any discomfort over a slightly longer distance. After 16 km the running training was over, and no discomfort was noticeable. I actually had 2 blisters before the runs, which were not provoked.
After 652 km of running training
The outsole has now worn out. In several places. I therefore no longer use the shoes. I think they have held up very well. 652 km is nothing impressive, but keep in mind that it is a minimal running shoe of only about 200 grams. It is my experience that the lighter the running shoes are, the shorter they last. Competition shoes I experience typically have a lifespan of 5-700 kilometers. Now the Asics Lyte33 is not a specific competition running shoe, but it is very light.
The fit has been good throughout. I haven’t gotten any blisters except on very long runs. I can handle the pain, but if you tend to get blisters, you’ll probably get them in these shoes on very long runs.
Remember that fit is very individual. How the shoes fit on me can be very different from how you experience the fit.
Other runners say…
Karsten Bidstrup, Assens, has been natural running for 3 years
Ninette Lund, Hoptrup, runs +30 km/week
Johannes Andersen, Nykøbing Falster, runs 40 km/week (4 marathons in his bag)
You can also read Thomas Skytte’s review of the shoe her. It’s an earlier version he’s reviewed, but he mentions a few good things. Alternatively, you can skip because Amazon, where there are many user reviews of the shoe. See also the overall rating below.
Size selection in Asics Gel Lyte 33
I did my research. Only when I was going to buy the shoe myself, I was unsure about which size to choose. Usually, lighter competition running shoes are a bit small in size, and I immediately thought it would be the same with this one, but that turned out not to be the case.
With a little Google searching I quickly found out that the shoe is similar in size to other shoes. It is “true to size”, so to speak. I run a size 42 in most shoes, and the same is true with this one. No difference here. You can therefore safely buy the Asics Lyte 33 in your normal size (½ size larger than your everyday shoe).
I have also included what others have said about the size. This is based on many other runners assessing how the shoe fits in relation to what can be expected.
Advantages and disadvantages
There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to all running shoes. I am personally surprised by the Asics Gel Lyte33. So much so, in fact, that I have done some deep research to see if I could find other tests and reviews where the shoe was criticized. It is a bit here and there, but overall my impression is that the feedback is very positive. Please note that I have no incentive to praise the shoe unnaturally highly. I paid for the shoe myself.
Benefits
Good breathability in the upper
Good durability of the upper
Comfortable midfoot landing
Disadvantages
Too much GEL in the heel
The outsole is weak.
Buy Gel Lyte33 – WHY
- Excellent shock absorption, especially in the midfoot and forefoot
- Very low weight – good but not completely flat, so you still get some shock absorption
- Good for those who want to experiment with natural running and landing a little further forward on the foot.
- Comfortable fit that doesn’t cause (me) any discomfort
Analysis of who the shoe is best for
Running style
Asics Gel Lyte33 is for neutral or supinating running style. I have a bit of pronation myself, but have used the shoe without any problems. However, if you are a pronator runner, you should instead run in Asics Gel Super J33, which is the counterpart to Lyte33 (just for runners with pronation).
Fit
The shoe fits me well. They are a little wide in the forefoot. The heel is not as compact as I have experienced in other premium running shoes from Asics. I have not gotten blisters from the shoe, and have not experienced discomfort by making a sudden switch to running in these shoes.
In fine clothes
Due to the structure of the outsole, I recommend that you primarily use the Lyte33 on asphalt and hard-packed trails. If you go out into the woods, you will find that you do not have much grip in your shoes. You will slip a little. If you run a lot on gravel, I can in many ways recommend the Trailroc series from Inov8. I personally have good experiences with Inov8 Trailroc 245 (3mm drop and more minimal) and 255 (6mm drop and good protection).
Price level
I consider the shoe to be cheap for what you get. Typically, new models are extremely expensive to give a signal of quality. That is not the case here. Asics Gel Lyte33 is cheap.
Weight
The shoes are quite light. Approximately 200 grams for the men’s model. It is a fast running shoe that you can use for competitive running.
Type of shoe
Asics Lyte33 is a natural running shoe that you should use on your faster runs. If you have a good feel for the shoe, you can also use it on longer runs, but I do not recommend running +50km a week in the shoe unless you have experience running long distances in light running shoes. The risk of injury may increase for you.
Durability
I have run a lot in my shoes, and I think the durability has been fine. One criticism is that the sole is a bit loose and gets worn out a bit easily. However, you have to remember that the shoe is very light. It is an eternal balance: weight versus durability. I am happy with the combination here.
Drops and heights on the forefoot and heel
It varies greatly when runners consider natural running shoes, but in general the following must be met:
- The shoes should provide minimal support and should not dictate your direction.
- The shoes should not encourage a heel landing – there should be no difference between the height of the heel and the height of the forefoot.
The most extreme case of natural running is running barefoot.
I characterize the Asics Gel Lyte33 as a natural running shoe for the beginner / intermediate natural runner who wants to try to promote a landing further forward on the foot. When you land further forward you can achieve a faster stride.
About the technical structure
The outsole
The outsole is made as a fairly flexible construction, built in segments. This allows your feet to run more naturally and have a natural progression of your steps, where in normal running shoes you are very controlled while running.
Midsole
The midsole is made from a combination of Solyte and SpEVA, however, the weighting of SoLyte has been significantly offset in the latest version of the shoe. This makes the shoe a little lighter, and at the same time you get a better bounce back. In other words, the energy loss upon landing is less than in the previous version.
Many manufacturers, including Adidas andNike, These years, they are making a lot of money on the construction of the midsole. This is where the brands can win. Adidas has received a lot of praise for theirBoost technology (link about Boost), which has been shown to provide extremely good energy transfer from heel strike to take-off. Better than what Asics has been able to show so far. Personally, I can’t feel the difference in energy transfer in Asics and Adidas running shoes, but the difference is proven.
Heel
It’s GEL in the heel, hence the name Asics GEL Lyte33. GEL gives you comfortable shock absorption. You’ll definitely know the feel of GEL from other Asics running shoes.
Middle
Because the Asics Gel Lyte33 is a natural running shoe, there is limited stability in the midsole. This gives you better flexibility and minimal stiffness. This way, you get better conditions for optimal movement in all natural directions.
Forefoot
Anatomically correct flex movements have been added to the shoe. The idea behind this is that the shoe adapts to your running style (not running style in the traditional sense, but as in: “how you move”). If you typically roll a little outwards in the ball of your foot, the shoes will adapt to this and give you a little extra support in this area.
Upper part
The upper is a little different from other Asics running shoes, as it comes with a thin long plastic-like material on top of the normal mesh. This creates a slight stability, but not something you notice.
Difference between women’s and men’s shoes
Asics Gel Lyte33 men’s
As mentioned earlier, the men’s version comes with a drop of 5-6 millimeters depending on which size you use. The drop rarely varies more than 1 mm. The same applies to the weight, which primarily differs from size to size due to the shoe being longer and therefore more material. The Asics Lyte 33 men’s is the shoe that I have personally tested, and I have been incredibly satisfied with it.
Asics Gel Lyte33 women
The women’s version comes with a drop of 5-6 mm like the men’s shoe. If you are looking for Asics Lyte 33 women, you will primarily find them online. If you go around the physical stores, you will often find that they are sold out, or they are not available at all. Gel Lyte33 is most popular among men, which is why you as a woman should buy it online to be sure to find it in your size.
Difference between women’s and men’s shoes
Besides the fact that Asics shoes for men are larger in size than for women, there are a number of other differences from the Asics Gel Lyte33 women’s to the men’s version. The primary difference I have noticed when I have had both shoes in my hands has been that the women’s shoe is significantly stiffer than the men’s shoe.
In addition, the shock absorption in the Lyte33 women’s shoe is somewhat weaker than in the men’s shoe, hence the significantly lower weight.
Where to find Asics Lyte 33 on sale and discount
Offers
Because the Asics Gel Lyte33 is still a new running shoe, there is limited competition for the shoe. As you can see from the price table, there is a lot of money to save. However, it is not as much as in the traditional Asics running shoes. Buy Asics Gel Lyte33 on sale all year round online. There are always good deals to be found. If the price is too high, you can come back to this page later – the prices are updated automatically.
Sale
If you are looking to buy Asics Lyte33 on sale, you should pay special attention here at iloebesko during the periods January and August, as these are the typical sale periods for online running stores in Denmark and abroad. When you buy shoes on sale, you should also be aware that it is typically a sign that a brand new model is on the way. If you don’t care whether you get the latest model, there is nothing to stop you from buying Asics Gel Lyte33 on sale.
Alternatives to the Lyte33 series from Asics
If you already have good experiences with the Gel Lyte33 and would like to try similar shoes, it is obvious to try the Asics Gel Excel33, which is in the same series of running shoes as the Lyte33. The 33 series is Asics’s take on natural running running shoes. Natural running experts often believe that you should train in shoes with zero drop (i.e. no height difference from heel to forefoot), but I think that 4-8 mm is a good way to start with natural running. Here you can experiment a little with landing further forward on the shoes.
It’s no secret that the Asics Lyte 33 is a very lightweight running shoe. If you want more cushioning, you can train on long runs. i the neutral running shoe Asics Nimbus. Asics has actually launched the Lyte33 as a natural running shoe for runners who previously ran in the Nimbus or Cumulus (little brother of the Nimbus). If you are a pronator, you should get your hands on the Asics Gel Super J33 instead as your pronator for natural running and Gel Kayano for long runs.
If you are not into natural running or midfoot/forefoot landing, but just want a light competition running shoe, Asics DS Racer the best choice (a shoe I personally have good experiences with).
If you would like to try a brand other than Asics, I would recommend you New Balance Minimus Road / Trail / Zero, which is a very minimal running shoe, but has a zero drop (0 mm from heel to forefoot). My last bet isthe somewhat lighter Nike Flyknit Racer. Good for fast runs and competitive/exercise runs.
Summary
I am a fan of the entire Asics 33 series. (read more about it here). I tend to overpronate a bit myself, but I think I’ve had good experiences with the Asics Gel Lyte33. The fit is really good, even if you have a slightly wide forefoot. I don’t have a wide forefoot, but having a little extra room has given my feet good comfort (especially on longer runs).
I recommend the Asics Lyte33 as a running shoe for faster runs or for those who want to try natural running. If you decide to buy the shoe, I would strongly recommend that you practice midfoot landing or forefoot landing, as the cushioning is really good in these areas.
It is a light shoe that is fun to run in. Be careful with injuries and too much training in the shoes, as it is a very light shoe. If you are not used to many kilometers in shoes without much shock absorption, you may risk getting some injuries. I recommend you start out slowly and train with the shoe once a week. All in all, an excellent running shoe.
Price comparison
I can in many ways recommend this running shoe to those who want to train in a pair of lighter shoes with a powerful kick. I have searched around the web and found the following cheap prices.
