This is what you should notice about Asics GlideRide

You probably see it already when you unpack the shoe. That this running shoe from Asics is not like all the others. With this running shoe, Asics has chosen to step a little outside the “classic running shoe path”. the path that they have otherwise been known to stick to. Asics has been a guarantee of the safe running shoe. Models like Asics Gel Kayano, Asics Nimbus or Asics GT-2000 have been the models that people always talk about when they mention Asics. All classic running shoes.
Asics GlideRide steps next. Or maybe that sounds negative again. It’s just different than what we’ve been used to seeing from Asics. And you see that as soon as you get the shoe in your hands.

Because you can’t help but notice that the shoe’s outsole is not classic. It is extremely curved at the forefoot. And of course there is an explanation for that. You will find it further down in the article.

Next is the “high sole”. You also see that as one of the first things, that’s for sure. Maybe you switched your thoughts to other shoe brands when you saw it? Of course, you may not know them, but the sole on the Asics GlideRide looks very similar to a midsole that we know from the Hoka One One shoes or from selected Nike series (Nike Zoom Fly). But here too there are surprises on the way. Because I can already reveal that the midsole surprised me quite a bit.

Asics GlideRide takes an unconventional path when you think of normal running shoes from Asics.

If you love high comfort and lots of softness, then buy Asics GlideRide.

You buy Asics GlideRide if you want a running shoe with a medium-wide fit.

You don't buy the Asics GlideRide if you want a lightweight speed monster. The shoe is a tractor, not a race car.

Unpacking the Asics GlideRide and the first run

In the next section you can see our unboxing video of the Asics Glideride. What we thought when we unpacked the shoe.
The shoe was of course researched online before arrival, so it’s not entirely surprising what kind of shoe it is. But looking and reading about a shoe online doesn’t really give you a sense of the shoe as a whole. You can see all that in the video in the next section.

The first run in the Asics Glideride was a bit surprising – in several ways. You shouldn’t believe everything you read. But I had consulted the internet before the first run. and had read a bit here about the sole being surprising. That it looked ultra soft, but in fact it wasn’t. I will admit, I thought and fully believed it was a bouncy running shoe, but I learned better..
The sole construction is high and looks incredibly soft from the outside. But it wasn’t many 100 meters before I had to admit that the observations I read were true. The shoe is not at all as “bouncy” as you might expect. Not that that’s a bad thing, because it isn’t. But I, like many others, got a surprise out of it. The sole is much firmer than you might expect.

Another positive surprise for me was the width of the shoe. Not that the shoe looked narrow or anything, but it was just very comfortable to step into and run in, even on the first run. I can feel that on the first run the shoe needs to be allowed to settle and give way. That was not the case with the Asics GlideRide. It sat as it should from the start. And it still does after +10 runs.

It probably won’t go unnoticed that the special construction was also a discovery on the first run. If you look through the pictures in this article, you can see how curved the forefoot of the shoe is. It kind of creates a kink. The sole is Asics’ answer to creating this running shoe that uses less energy on longer and longer runs. So you should be able to run further because you use less energy. This kink in the forefoot of the sole is an important part of the technology, because you are driven to move forward. This function is also part of the fact that you are not in any way disappointed that the shoe is not as soft as it looks. Because in combination, these 2 things are really good. They compromise each other really well, and probably make the most complete midsole, from Asics’ point of view, for many years.

Size selection in Asics GlideRide

I have always been a little irritated when it came to choosing a size in Asics running shoes. Because even though I recommend that you buy according to the centimeter measurement in the shoe (see picture), I still find that Asics irritates me a little. Normally, I fit size 43 in most running shoes. But the problem is that Asics does not make their shoes in size 43. You have to wear a 43.5 to hit the 27.5cm that I run in. There I have experienced models from them that have been too small in 42.5 but conversely also right on the large side in size 43.5.
But in the Asics GlideRide I don’t think I feel that irritation. It may be hard to explain, but it may be related to the fact that the forefoot in the model is very spacious. It does not sit tightly around your foot in any way, and as standard has a lot of air for the toes. So maybe I don’t notice that there is perhaps just a few millimeters too much in length?

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

The whole

Personally, I really like the overall look of the shoe. That is, the whole thinking behind the construction, etc. The fact that the shoe is a bit heavy is of course a disadvantage, but it basically fits well into the overall look.

Sole combination

When you had just recovered from the shock of the not-so-soft midsole. If you look at the sole as a whole, it's a cool construction. The 2x FlyteFoam foams do a good job. Read more about them under "midsole"

Curved sole left forefoot

The technology that pushes you forward with every step. You can easily see and feel what Asics wants with it. And when you run in the shoe, you have no doubt when you will reach the point where the sole "breaks".

The width

It's individual, I'm aware of that. But I think the shoe has a good width. Without being too wide, but a reasonable width. Will fit well for those with a medium-wide foot.

Disadvantages

Libra

Wouldn't we all like lighter running shoes? But sometimes they are just heavier than others, and there are usually reasons for that. But we can't help but think that the approx. 300 grams per shoe (size 439) is on the heavy end.

The price

The price is relative. Depends on who you are and what you as an individual get out of the shoe, I know! 1,300,- is still a good chunk of money. I would say, even though it's on the downside, that it already seems like it's a shoe with lots of mileage. So in that way, maybe it justifies the price a bit?

Toe box

For some runners the toe box/forefoot will be too wide and roomy. If you like your running shoes to fit snugly all the way around the foot, the Asics Glideride probably isn't your next running shoe. I think it's a great feel though.

Analysis part 1: Who should and can run in Asics Glideride

Analysis part number 1 is the part of the article that focuses on the runner. Who do I see who can and should run in the Asics GlideRide?

Which running style

The shoe is designed for the neutral runner. This means that there is no pronation support on the inside of the shoe..
But I would like to hasten to say that even if there is no direct support or anything else, the midsole is very stable due to its composition of Gel and not least FlyteFoam.

Fit

Asics GlideRide is definitely on the wider side. But without it becoming a bathtub you run around in..
The shoe has a nice fit on my feet. I know it’s individual, and if you have a narrow foot, then Asics Glideride may not be the place you should start looking.

  • Size: Regular
  • Heel: Tight fit
  • Midfoot: Medium fit
  • Forefoot: Loose fit
  • Toe: Very spacious
  • Arch structure: Regular
  • Shoe shape: Wide

Surfaces and conditions

The shoe is exclusively designed for running on harder surfaces. So the Asics Glideride is the running shoe for those who like to run on roads/asphalt or established trail systems. The shoe is not intended for trail running, to any great or lesser extent.

Price level

Asics glideride costs 1,300,- in the recommended retail price. That’s a lot of money, I think we can all agree on that. But I think you have to hold it against what you get in the shoe. Without having tested the life out of the shoe, it suggests that it is a shoe with many kilometers in it. And then you can ask yourself if the price is fair?
At least it’s not the same conditions as with, for example, the Nike VaporFly Next% –You can read more about its durability here., and I think you’re more inclined to believe that the price of 1,300,- for the Asics Glideride is fair.

How much does the Asics GlideRide weigh?

The test was made with asics glideride in size 43 (27.5 centimeters) and here there is a weight of around 313 grams. and of course that is a lot of grams per shoe if you compare it to a lightweight, so it can easily be 70-80 grams lighter. but as a whole, the weight fits the shoe nicely. And in fact it wasn’t this “heavy-shoe-feeling” that I got when I ran in the shoe.

Care and maintenance of Asics Glide

You need to maintain your running shoes. Not so much in terms of durability, but perhaps more in terms of odor and comfort/stiffness. Just never in the washing machine. We’ve made a good guide for you here:
You can read our guide to washing and maintaining running shoes here.

Drop height in Asics Glideride

The drop height in the Asics GlideRide is 5mm. So it’s not a high drop height. In fact, it’s half the drop height that is in the Asics Nimbus. So the shoe that was most natural to compare the Asics GlideRide to.

Drop heights:
Forefoot height: 26mm
Heel height: 31mm

Analysis Part 2: Technical Review Asics GlideRide

Here we aim to explain the more technical structure of the shoe as much as possible, in a way that everyone can understand.

The outsole

The outsole on the Asics glideRide does what it should. But I would like to highlight a few things. The sole is made of AHAR rubber, which is a durable type of rubber, which supports the fact that the shoe is for hard surfaces. The outsole has a really high abrasion resistance.
But if you look at the picture of the outsole, you can see its structure. And there have been trips (far from every time) where I have had to stop to remove stones from the “groove”. If you are unlucky, small stones get stuck in this groove, and it is a minor annoyance.

Midsole

This is where it happens in the Asics Glideride. It’s the midsole that creates this shoe. But that’s often the case with a running shoe, but that’s why I still think the Asics Glideride is special, or there’s a lot of history attached to each dish..
Lots of improvements have been made to the midsole. It is made up of both Gel inserts and FlyteFoam. FlyteFoam Propel creates the foundation of the midsole. A stable and highly cushioning material. At the top, FlyteFoam has been added in its more common construction. It is a little stiffer and more stabilizing.

Along with the double FlyteFoam midsole, an extra Gel cushion has also been added to the heel (see picture). And it is all these measures that make you think that before you run in the shoe, you are going to run on “clouds”. But that is not the case. The shoe is super comfortable and there is plenty of softness, don’t worry. But to say that the feeling is like the shoe looks, that would be wrong.

The construction of the midsole also makes it appear extremely stable. So if someone asked me if a pronated runner would be able to run in the Asics Glideride, I would undoubtedly say YES.

Heel

Here Asics has not strayed from the classic. And that’s great. Because if there’s one thing Asics has always been good at, it’s creating soft, supportive and comfortable heel areas. That’s what happens in the Asics Glideride
There is a stabilizing heel cap placed on the outside of the shoe, and inside the shoe there is plenty of softness and support for your heel/Achilles tendon.

Shock absorption

The softness and cushioning in the Asics Glideride consists of the GEL that is placed in the heel and of course all the FlyteFoam that is used in the midsole. As I have written several times, it is a “firmer” cushioning than you expect, but you will also find that it fits the shoe and the concept.

Forefoot

Here you have to be aware that there is plenty of room in the forefoot. There is plenty of room for your toes in the “box” Lots of air. When I look at the shoe as a whole, I think it makes good sense. If I have to be snarky, and I have to be, you could easily do without a single millimeter or two in height.

Upper part

The upper on the Asics GlideRide actually reminds me a bit in structure of the Flyknit upper from Nike. However, without being quite as elastic. But the upper is of course seamless, so you avoid discomfort and the risk of blisters. And the material is super breathable.

Comparisons to Asics GlideRide

The first and most natural thing would be to compare it with Asics Nimbus. Because they are from the same brand, but they are also both neutral mass training running shoes. But the more trips I ran in the Asics Glideride, the more I thought about whether it would be more appropriate to compare the shoe with the Asics GT-2000? Because the shoe is stable, even though it is launched as neutral.

I’ve mentioned it elsewhere in the article too. But a good deed can’t be done too often. If we take the shoe’s unconventional construction (seen through Asics eyes) as a starting point, you can easily draw a parallel to Hoka One One running shoes. At least in terms of appearance, maybe not so much in terms of feel..
And if you really want to make a comparison, take a look at the Nike Zoom flight construction. There we also have this “propulsion-sole construction”

Summary

I’m positively surprised. I was honestly a bit skeptical about the weight before I started running in the shoe. But honestly, it wasn’t something I gave a second thought to when I started testing.

For me, Asics Glideride is this indestructible tractor that just grinds out lots of kilometers. You can argue whether the shoe is worthy of a competition shoe? Maybe you can argue for it because of the propulsion you get in the shoe. But as a running nerd, I would probably choose another shoe for that purpose. But if you are a recreational runner, this shoe is great for both. You get a mass training running shoe with the possibility of speed. And you definitely get high comfort and protection on your longer runs.

I like the Asics GlideRide, I definitely do. So it gets my recommendation. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s actually a nice looking running shoe. A shoe that could probably go with a pair of shorts and a t-shirt in the warmer months.
