Asics GT-2000 version 8 has landed. What can it do?
The world’s best little brother? The most solid little sister in the world? The Asics GT-2000 has had all sorts of names for many years. It has had various predicates, but most of all it is probably known for being this little brother or sister to the Asics Gel Kayano.
We have previously reviewed and compared the GT-2000 and Asics Kayano. You can read it here.
In our world, it is a misnomer to give the shoe the title “little brother”. Although it may not be intended that way, it has a negative connotation. And that is in no way how you should look at this shoe. If you have read our comparison, you will know what we are talking about. The Asics GT-2000 is the shoe that everyone should choose at least every other time they choose to buy a Kayano running shoe. The Asics GT-2000 simply fits the average Danish runner much better.
The shoe has been around for many years. And even though we’ve now reached “only” version 8, don’t let that fool you. It’s only because the shoe has changed its name along the way, and thus also its version number.
But now we have reached the Asics GT-2000 v8. A running shoe that faces a significant task, namely to carry on the legacy of the 7er version of the same running shoe..
But in our eyes there is now no danger that it won’t happen (again) that the new version of the GT-2000 will be better than the previous one. The Asics GT-2000 v8 has received some significant and truly noticeable updates along its journey.
You will definitely be able to see that the shoe has become smoother to look at and touch. The upper has been updated, so that it is now more of a whole. The upper itself is more one-piece, and without so many “overlays”. The upper has also become seamless, which gives you a much better fit and a better feel of the shoe as a whole.
The outsole, heel and softness of the shoe have also been significantly improved. You will probably notice a really nice difference in the heel area in particular. There has been an upgrade to the FlyteFoam foam, but a larger GEL cushion has also been added to the heel for better and more massive shock absorption. This gives you an even better (softer) experience when you run.
But beyond that, you can expect the “same unique running shoe” as you usually do. A running shoe with a pronation wedge that caters to the runner with mild to moderate overpronation. A volume running shoe with lots of miles and for most distances. The shoe is still equipped with a 10mm heel drop.
Asics GT-2000 is a classic
There is a little story to the Asics GT-2000 that you may already know, or else you will get it here. If you (at the time of writing) look at the version number of the shoe, it is not very high. And it is usually the version number that you can spot whether a running shoe is new or old in the field. The higher the version number, the older the shoe usually is.
But why is it that many call the GT-2000 a classic and a shoe that has been around since the king of diamonds was a jack, when its version number is so relatively low?
This is because the shoe has changed its name during its time on the market. The shoe itself and its function is a shoe that Asics has had in its product range for many, many years. But before the Asics GT-2000 was called the Asics GT-2000, it was called something else. If you have been the lucky owner of a pair of Asics GT 2100 or perhaps a pair of Asics GT 2160, then you have actually been a first-mover, somewhat unproven, on the Asics GT-2000. The GT2100 series is the predecessor to the Asics GT-2000 series. The shoe is the same, and is aimed at the same type of runner, while the name is different. That is why people talk about the GT-2000 being an aging shoe that has been on the market for many years. It has lived hidden under a cover name.
This is what you should notice about the Asics GT-2000
The first thing you should notice about the Asics GT-2000 is how much it looks like its big brother, the Asics Gel Kayano. And the reason we highlight this as the first thing you should notice is because we like to say, and now we are probably at odds with a lot of “kayano runners” in Denmark, that the Asics GT-2000 is in the vast majority of cases “a better” running shoe than an Asics Kayano? Not in the actual construction and the materials used, but in the actual performance.
You can read our comparison of Asics Kayano vs. Asics GT-2000 here
But if we are going to take a look at the Asics GT-2000 and its functions as a running shoe, there are of course also some things you need to be aware of.
Among other things, it is worth noting the midsole and its material that is placed in the Asics GT-2000. Flytefoam is placed in the midsole, which was otherwise reserved for the “top models” at Asics for a long time. FlyteFoam is a midsole that is not only more responsive, gives you faster take-off/run, it is also significantly more durable and lighter. It is one of the functions of the shoe that has been optimized recently. Previously, the shoe could look and feel a little heavy, as it was equipped with a different and heavier midsole.
Afterwards, it will of course be natural to highlight what a versatile running shoe the Asics GT-2000 is. You can also read more about this in the comparison of Asics Kayano and Asics GT-2000..
But the shoe itself is a pronation running shoe, so it is aimed at him or her who leans inward on their feet when they run. But what Asics GT-2000 does so well is that there is a better harmony between the shoe’s midsole and its pronation wedge. An ordinary runner, for example a man of 80-82kg will get a much more harmonious running shoe in Asics GT-2000 than he would get in Kayano. Asics GT-2000 is built for him or her with average or normal weight.

Analysis part 1: Who runs in the Asics GT-2000
The first part of the analysis is to find out who can and should use this running shoe (Asics GT-2000). Here we will discuss the various features and functions of the shoe.
Which running style
Asics GT 2000 is by definition a running shoe that is aimed at him or her who is a pronator runner. The shoe has a pronation wedge (Duomax) built into the inside of the shoe, and will therefore be able to “slow down” mild to moderate overpronation. The special thing about Asics GT 2000 is also (as we have previously written about) that its combination of midsole, pronation wedge and shock absorption actually makes the shoe in many cases a better choice for those who buy Asics Kayano again and again.
Fit
You will find a fairly standard fit in the Asics GT-2000. It does not tend to be particularly wide or particularly narrow in its construction.
Surfaces and conditions
An all-round running shoe that primarily performs well on harder surfaces. At least that’s what it’s made for. Asphalt, regular roads – but if you stick to the forest path or gravel path, without getting near branches and thorns, then it can easily handle this too. It actually has a relatively strong upper.
Price level
I don’t even think the starting price is particularly high. The shoe has a suggested retail price of 1,200,- And it’s certainly not exorbitant when you look at what you get in the shoe. But fortunately/unfortunately there is also so much competition for this shoe, or Asics running shoes in general, that a simple Google search will show you that it can easily be found for under 1,000,- And sometimes as low as 799,-
So we’re talking a really good price for a super good running shoe.
Weight of Asics GT-2000
It’s a neither-or running shoe. It’s not super light, but it’s actually not very heavy either (when you look at its features). If you choose to buy a pair of Asics GT-2000, you can, if you’re not too picky, easily get yourself a running shoe that can be used for both short, long and fast distances.
Care and maintenance of Asics GT-2000
You can read our guide to washing and maintaining running shoes here
But otherwise, it’s like we always say. Hand wash your running shoes if you think they need to be washed. Take out the insole after you’ve been out running, and let your shoes dry naturally.
Drop height in Asics GT-2000
The Asics GT-2000 has a drop of 10mm.
This means that in this shoe we are dealing with the classic construction. The type of running shoe that is made for what we refer to as heel-landings.
Drop heights:
Forefoot height: 11mm
Heel height: 21mm
Analysis Part 2: Technical Review of the Asics GT-2000
The part where you may “risk” running into a bit more technical jargon. But we promise to try to keep it as simple as possible.
The outsole
The outsole of the Asics GT-2000 is, like most Asics running shoes, made of AHAR rubber. A durable material that has a very good grip on the surface in most conditions. A high abrasion resistance ensures that your running shoes will last a long time, even under heavy loads..
As I said, I don’t think I have any problems with the Asics GT-2000 staying on gravel paths or forest trails. That’s not what the shoe is made of, and therefore neither is the outsole, but our experience tells us that you can find grip on those surfaces too.
Midsole
The midsole consists of 3 elements. 2 softening and one stabilizing. The midsole is made of Speva foam and FlyteFoam. And the FlyteFoam material in particular is interesting, as it is the latest addition to the Asics line of durable midsoles. Flytefoam is not only more durable, it is also significantly lighter than the regular EVA midsole..
There is a Duomax wedge in the midsole. This is the element that helps you against overpronation.
Heel
There’s not much to say, other than it works. No issues, and with the well-known and characteristic Asics construction. It may well be that “Asics heels” at one time were most known for breaking. But they have always been super soft and comfortable. They still are, and the durability has also been significantly improved. There’s not much to say, other than it works. No issues, and with the well-known and characteristic Asics construction. It may well be that “Asics heels” at one time were most known for breaking. But they have always been super soft and comfortable. They still are, and the durability has also been significantly improved.
Shock absorption
It is mainly the SpevaFoam technology, which is located almost directly under the insole in the shoe, that is responsible for that springy feeling you get in the Asics GT-2000. It generally has a super good and balanced softness. Not too little and not too much. Absolutely perfect.
Forefoot
Here it is appropriate to mention the wider toe box that has been introduced in this tested model. In previous versions, the Asics GT-2000 has been accused of having a narrow forefoot or that there was no room for the toes. That is now the case. So that there is also the possibility of a proper take-off without the toes being squeezed.
Upper part
It has become more the rule than the exception. The upper of a running shoe should be seamless and ultra sweat-wicking. That is also the case with the Asics GT-2000. The shoe has a light and comfortable upper. Mesh panels have been placed in the shoe where it makes the most sense in terms of achieving the best possible opportunity for the feet to breathe.
Comparisons to Asics GT-2000
It’s just very natural to start with your older brother. Asics Gel Kayano is a clear comparison to the GT-2000. They are basically very similar in both structure and functionality.
Another option could be Saucony Guide which is also a running shoe that is very similar to the Asics GT-2000.
Summary
For me, the Asics GT-2000 is this stable running shoe that can last for many kilometers and that sits really well on the foot. A bit like getting into a Toyota and driving off. Personally, I’m glad I dared to take the leap from Kayano to Asics GT-2000. Because I can easily feel that due to its construction, the GT-2000 from Asics is a better running shoe for my build and weight..
If you are looking for a really solid running partner, then this shoe is a clear top choice.
