Asics Metarun – this is what’s special about the shoe
In our opinion, it is very special to produce a running shoe for 2,100,- and then offer it for sale in a very few selected stores and webshops. So the fact that the shoe is not widely available already makes it very interesting and irresistible. But having said that, you should of course also have a short introduction to how to find a running shoe in that price range..
Asics Metarun is a running shoe that is very similar in construction to the Asics Kayano, and in many ways it is also the one that was used as inspiration. You could rightly say that the Asics Metarun is an Asics Kayano with a twist.
Asics has previously tried such an exclusive model. Not in the same narrow field of stores and sales points, but still a little bit there. At the time, the Asics Kinsei was also offered to a few (although more) selected people, and was promoted as the brand new top running shoe from Asics. It was slightly lower in price compared to the Asics Metarun, but apparently never quite got the desired position in the market according to Asics.
So the question is whether Asics Metarun can do better. We don’t think the odds are too good. Not because of the quality, but because of the availability. Because if Asics Metarun were to be sold on its quality, and if it were available like all the other top running shoes from Asics, then we would have believed in a good success for Asics Metarun. But our opinion right now is that the sales channels simply mean that it will never find its place in the market. But we’ll see in a few years – maybe we’re guessing wrong.
But back to what’s special about the Asics Metarun. The shoe is made exclusively from the best materials and technologies from Asics’ production halls. We know that you probably expected that at that price, but nevertheless you can feel when you step into the shoe that the details have been meticulous. It sits perfectly on the foot and has an even more absorbent feeling around the foot than the Kayano and Nimbus. And that’s saying a lot. You can read more about the actual construction, review of materials and technologies in our big test of the Asics Metarun below. Because it can already reveal that not everything is as it seems or should be.
But if you are one of the (few) lucky ones who will be running in Asics Metarun, then you definitely have something fantastic to look forward to.

The first impression of the Asics Metarun
When you have ordered the most expensive running shoes of this time and are waiting for delivery, even the most seasoned running nerd gets tingles. And of course it did for me too. As always, I research all kinds of running shoes before buying, and of course also the Asics Metarun. I actually spent a little time thinking before I ordered and paid for these running shoes, as I think that around 2000,- for a running shoe is a lot of money. And when you looked at the somewhat exclusive exposure that the shoe gets, there was something inside me that said if it would make sense for us to review these running shoes.
But if we weren’t going to do it, who would, and of course the runners (probably quite a few) who want to try running in the Asics Metarun should also have our feedback. So it was put in the basket, and the joy could begin.
The first impression of the Asics Metarun is fantastic. Many will say that it should be when it costs around two thousand kroner, and I am inclined to agree with them. But when I received the Asics Metarun and unpacked it, I was still a little surprised. To put it bluntly, it stinks of very high quality. When and if you ever get this running shoe in your hand and or on your feet, I am sure you will agree with me. You immediately notice that the finest materials have been chosen to make this running shoe. And the first time I put the shoe on at home in the living room, I just thought “wow” This running shoe can do something in terms of smoothness and fit. This running shoe is super nice and soft. But it wasn’t long before I had to run in the shoe too, and then I had a slightly different opinion.
The first run in the Asics Metarun was a planned test run. 5-6 kilometers at a very steady running pace and with the opportunity to stop along the way and make various adjustments in relation to lacing and testing in general. The run was a success throughout, the shoe absorbs into the foot (like all other Asics running shoes) and you immediately notice how the completely optimal shock absorption helps you to have a unique experience. Where I think Asics has made a mistake in this shoe – yes you heard right, I think there are mistakes – but when you make such a nice, flexible and soft upper, in my eyes it is a mistake to make so much air for the toes. For me, it causes some discomfort that I would very much like to have avoided. So that was, if I am completely honest, the feeling I had after the first run in the Asics Metarun.

Several trips in Metarun from Asics gave more experiences
The last section may have ended with a little bit of a rant, and in this section I would like to start by shooting that down again. Because you must not think in any way that the shoe is bad because it certainly is not. It simply cannot be, because it is the best that has come out of Asics’ production halls at the time of writing. All the best materials have been used in this shoe.
But have almost run about 100 kilometers in this running shoe, and there is not a finger to put on all the technologies in the shoe. They play absolutely max, and will please every runner who fits Ascic Metarun in running style and fit. There is only the small but in my opinion that I feel that the upper of the shoe is super nice but too spacious. And it gives me an 80% experience when I run in them rather than a 100% experience. And that is a bit of a shame for such an expensive running shoe.
Another small thing I’ve noticed about the shoe is its impact on the ground. It’s probably a very personal thing and can vary a lot from runner to runner. But nevertheless, I have a little bit of a “box feeling” so I have an impact on the asphalt. Basically, I think it has a lot to do with the shoe being too roomy for me (generally, Asics Metarun is too roomy) but I don’t experience the same smooth execution of each step as I do in my Asics GT-2000, for example.

Size selection
I think in most cases you should go with your “usual” size in this Asics Metarun. But still, I would like to make a point of keeping in mind that the upper is very roomy. Personally, I am considering whether I could have taken it half a size smaller. Maybe that could have done something good for my experience of roominess and size consistency.

Analysis part 1: Who should run in the Asics Metarun
When we do the first analysis part of a running shoe in our reviews, this is where you find out who can use this running shoe and where we recommend using it.
Which running style
As you can see at the moment, there is a lot of work being done worldwide to create running shoes and midsoles that are intelligent. So that they can adapt to the individual runner. And that is also what Asics has achieved with a Metarun model like this. The midsole in particular is built in such a way that if you need stability when overpronating, it gives you it. On the other hand, if you don’t need it, you can still use the shoe without feeling any discomfort from a pronation wedge in the shoe.
This phenomenon is in our opinion really useful in many contexts. When you look at it all in the light of the fact that Asics Metarun is developed as a long-distance running shoe, you can start with fresh feet and legs, but the further you get out, the more tired your joints and muscles become and then you slowly fall more and more inward on your feet. So this construction is smart. Personally, I am by definition a pronation runner and had no problems in these shoes with regard to any sore joints and muscles.

Fit
I don’t see myself as a runner with a narrow foot, so I have to say that this shoe is very wide and roomy in its fit. As previously mentioned further up in the review of Asics metarun, the shoe is incredibly roomy from the instep forward. And personally, I think it’s a little too much. I’m a fan of running shoes that fit snugly, but I can usually run in “not tight” running shoes without noticing it. But I can’t do that in this one.
The fit in the rest of the running shoe is really nice. A good soft fit, especially in the heel area, makes this running shoe something special.
- Size: Regular
- Heel: Tight fit
- Midfoot: Tight fit
- Forefoot: Wide fit
- Shoe tip: Regular
- Arch structure: low
- Shoe shape: semi-curved
Surfaces and conditions
Asics has become known worldwide for producing some of the best running shoes in the world for asphalt. Their trail shoes have never really been anything to write home about. The Asics Metarun is no exception. It is a running shoe for asphalt or more precisely, firm ground. And by firm ground we mean that you can easily run on orderly and firm gravel paths or forest roads with this shoe. The only thing you need to be aware of is when and if these paths or roads are in the forest, then watch out for branches, stones or thorns, because the upper of the Asics Metarun cannot withstand that. It is simply not rough enough for that.
Price level
Very very high, and also a bit too high in our opinion. As previously mentioned, it is easy to see that this running shoe from Asics is at the absolute top level when it comes to the use of materials. But the fact that the shoe should cost 2,100,- in the recommended retail price is a bit too much. If you start from Asics Kayano which costs 1,500,- then you could perhaps justify recommending this Asics Metarun to 17 or max. 1,800,-
In our opinion, the price level will definitely slow down the sales of this shoe. Because most runners love high quality, but unfortunately few runners will spend over 2,000,- on it.
Weight of Asics Metarun
This is one of the noticeable advantages of the Asics Metarun. Even though it looks and is built like a relatively heavy running shoe, I don’t think its 313 grams in size 43½ is scary. You can definitely feel that when you put this running shoe on, it is lighter than it looks. This is due to, among other things, the lightweight upper, the optimized midsole (FlyteFoam) and a number of other features.

Care and maintenance of Asics Metarun
As always, you should keep your running shoes as far away from the washing machine as possible. If you absolutely must wash them, do it by hand. And yes, we are also aware that modern washing machines are equipped with various gentle programs and rinse programs that might solve the task. But in our opinion, the risk is just too great since your running shoes are affected by unknown amounts of water and a heat that you cannot fully control. At least you do not know how the glue in your running shoes will react to it. So always by hand.
In addition, always remember to air out your running shoes after use. Remove the insole and then place them somewhere to dry. The place should be natural drying, not something with direct heat from, for example, a stove or fireplace.
Drop height in Asics Metarun
Asics Metarun has a drop of 10mm. Which in practice means that this shoe is made for “heel-landers”. This means that you usually land on your heel and execute your step/roll forward. If you are thinking of practicing footwork or perhaps want to land on your midfoot, then I would recommend a lower drop than what is found in Asics Metarun.
Drop heights:
Forefoot height: 20mm
Heel height: 30mm
Analysis Part 2: The full technical review of the Asics Metarun
In analysis part 2, we go over the more technical and detail-oriented things. This is where you may run into technical terms that may not be understandable to everyone. However, we always do what we can to make all our reviews as understandable as possible.
The outsole
The tread pattern in the sole is nice, it does what it’s supposed to. It’s built to master asphalt and maybe a little bit of trails. The AHAR+ material provides ultimate grip on the surface. This is not the first time that Asics has chosen to use this material, but I still personally think that the grip in this running shoe is more effective than in other Asics running shoes I’ve tested recently. And as mentioned earlier in the review, I actually think that there is a little too much grip. It could easily decrease when I run a few more kilometers in the shoe, but right now and here there is an incredible amount of grip in the outsole.
I The outsole on the Asics Metarun is of course also equipped with Guidance Line, which is the system from Asics that ensures a stable and correct execution of every step you take on your run.

Midsole
Asics Metarun wins over many other running shoes. But the midsole in Asics Metarun, that’s where the magic really happens. It naturally has the new and revolutionary new midsole FlyteFoam from Asics. It is not only 55% lighter than the regular classic EVA midsole, it is also much more responsive and active in its recovery. Asics metarun also contains new built-in organic fibers in the midsole that make it heal and give you the same shock absorption in every step. A more vibrant and organic midsole that is both lighter and softer, but at the same time with the same stability. What more could you want.
Sloped DUOMAX is the technology that gives you the flexibility to adjust stability as needed. AdaptTruss is a 2-part stability system that supports and collaborates with DUOMAX, giving you the correct stability at the right time.

Heel
If you are used to running in Asics running shoes, then you probably have two opinions about Asics heel caps in running shoes. They are super soft and comfortable to run with, they just last an unbelievably short time? Correct? In Asics metarun, at least in terms of comfort, it is exactly the same approach. MetaClutch heel cap with a so-called memory foam gives you the best and most optimal fit every time. It is super soft and comfortable and I felt no discomfort from the heel when I tested Asics Metarun. I will not make a conclusion at the time of writing whether the heel issue has been resolved. After about 100km in the shoe, it does not seem like a heel is breaking. At least there is no noticeable wear.

Shock absorption
A new and optimized Gel construction sees the light of day in the Asics Metarun. The X-Gel construction provides a more precise and far more optimal shock absorption due to its more correct placement. In the rearfoot alone, X-Gel should provide up to 18% improvement in shock absorption.
Forefoot
There are both really good things and then some things in the forefoot of the Asics Metarun that I think are not so good. If you have read the whole review then you probably have no doubt for a second that I think the fit in the forefoot is too wide, and that is a great shame..
But if we look at the materials from the upper (coming in the next point) and the shock absorption that is in the forefoot, then we are definitely dealing with a quite perfect shoe and shoe construction. There is no finder to put on that construction.
Upper part
Soft and super comfortable. That’s how it could be said. The optimized upper is also responsible for the lower weight. But to go a little deeper into it, it is a Jacquard Mesh solution that is used as the upper in Asics Metarun. It is a glove or sock-like construction that fits perfectly around your feet. It is super flexible and very breathable. It naturally contains no seams so you avoid all the discomfort from the upper. You almost don’t notice that you are wearing the shoe.

Comparisons to Asics Metarun
It is a bit difficult for me to draw direct comparisons to the Asics Metarun. It is such an exclusive and unique running shoe in its manufacturing and construction that it would be a shame to draw comparisons on that basis. But if we are going to list some individual models, it will be with a view to use, type and appearance. Of course, you should look at Asics’ 2 own models Asics Kayano andAsics GT-2000. Both are pronation running shoes..
You can also choose to look towards a New Balance 1260 or perhaps Guide from Saucony.
Summary
Honestly, I think it’s a difficult task to come up with a summary of a running shoe like the Asics Metarun. Because there’s no one to judge its manufacturing, choice of materials and technologies. Everything just plays 102%. On the other hand, I think I have a little difficulty seeing the shoe’s justification in the market. The price is so high that the “ordinary” runner doesn’t come close to the shoe. It was only produced in 60,000 copies worldwide (the first time it was launched – I don’t know the numbers for this 2nd version). That makes the shoe a bit of a luxury running shoe and I don’t really know if I’m a fan of that..
If Asics had chosen to cut out a few technologies that you couldn’t feel right away anyway, and then put the shoe down in price and on sale in more places, then I don’t doubt for a second that it would sell like hotcakes. Because it really is a great running shoe to run in. And that’s even though I have significantly reduced the width, especially in the forefoot of the shoe. It’s an individual adjustment, and can easily fit all runners and then be bad on my feet. But let me say it again – Asics Metarun is too expensive.
What can you get for an Asics Metarun?
Couldn’t resist making this little subheading. If you take into account that Asics Metarun keeps the price around 2,000,- (which I think it does since retailers are carefully selected by Asics themselves, and thus they have a bit of control over the price) You can choose between 1 piece. Asics Metarun or maybe an Asics GT-2000 AND a Asics DS Trainer and on a really good day you can also get a pair of luxury running socks included in the price. I know what I would choose as a regular consumer.
