What’s new in Brooks PureCadence 3
First came the Nike Free, which was an ambitious attempt to create a minimalist running shoe (the Nike Free is not a good running shoe). Then came the PureCadence 3, a true minimalist running shoe that has helped push the boundaries of running. The PureCadence 3 promotes a natural running style. You get a running shoe with a heel-to-toe drop of 5mm, which is reasonable for a natural running shoe.
The latest update to the Brooks PureCadence 3 is the most powerful upgrade to the series’ running shoes.
Although this is a major upgrade, it is still more subtle changes that give the shoe a better fit and a more natural fit and feel.
The shoe’s NavBand is now constructed of silicone and has been integrated into the midsole on the medial side to improve support.
On the arch, they have also added extra support and stability with an improved pod.
The PureCadence 3 has changed the shoe’s ToeFlex to accommodate two toes and no longer just the big toe. This gives the Brooks PureCadence 3 a more powerful push-off than previous models.

My test of PureCadence
First impressions
I’ve been looking forward to unpacking PureCadence and testing the running shoe, and trying out a new Natural Running running shoe. My first reaction is not entirely positive, though. I honestly don’t think the design is particularly cool or anything. The shoe’s outsole looks a bit strange. But I can ignore the design if the shoe’s performance is top-notch. In any case, the comfort is good.
I naturally run as soon as possible to find out how it runs. I have some previous experience with low drop and a natural running style, which helps me quickly find the rhythm and find a comfortable running pace. I am surprised by the good cushioning and support that is still found in the shoe. It was not exactly what I expected, but I actually think it works very well.
500 km later
The shoe is starting to wear out. Not that the Brooks PureCadence is falling apart, but it has started to wear out on both the upper and the outsole. I don’t think 500 km is enough for a pair of running shoes in this price category. However, running in the Brooks PureCadence has been a good experience. I’ve really fallen in love with the tight fit, which keeps my foot completely locked down in the shoe. The upper fits or adapts to my foot, so the shoe sits just as well and comfortably as it did at first impression.
In addition, I still think it works well with relatively strong shock absorption and support around pronation in combination with the shoe’s low drop and natural feel. Unlike some other running shoes, with good pronation support, I don’t feel like I’m running with a block around my foot with the PureCadence. The weight is so low that I hardly notice that I’m wearing it. I had hoped that the grip would be a little better on trails, but the shoe is intended for asphalt, so it was probably my mistake to have hopes for this. I have been genuinely satisfied with the Brooks PureCadence and can definitely recommend the shoe. If it had had longer durability, it could easily have been my favorite running shoe.
What do others say about the shoe?

Hanne Jessen, Herlev, New to natural running
I have also captured other reviews online so you can get a more general picture of what people think about the shoe.
Why you should buy Brooks PureCadence
There are many reasons to choose this particular running shoe if you tend to pronate. The main reason, however, is that you would like to try a lighter running shoe with a focus on a natural progression of the foot’s movements during running. I myself have good experiences with Brooks PureCadence, which fits snugly, has a responsive and powerful push-off and feels incredibly light.
- In 2012, Brooks PureCadence was named the world’s best running shoe by Runnersworld
- You are looking for a true minimalist running shoe with a low drop
- You have a tendency to pronate
- Du vil have en aggressiv løbesko, som ikke vejer meget
- Miljøvenlig og biologisk nedbrydelig mellemsål = God karma
Find the right size
There is no doubt that this is a truly fantastic running shoe. I am a pronator myself, and therefore the shoe fits me perfectly. In terms of size, I recommend that you take ½ size larger. than you are used to in normal running shoes. This is something I have experienced personally, and through selling the shoe to others.
I have also collected information about what others think about the size selection. This is illustrated in the figure below. As you can see, the majority say that the shoe is true to size.

Part 1 – Running Information about Cadence
Running style
The running shoe is primarily aimed at overpronating runners. It is the shoe in the Pure series with the most support. So even though it is a natural running running shoe, which is aimed at a more minimalist approach to running, it provides good support and help with overpronation. You get the feeling of having the necessary support without feeling the shoe.
Fit
I have been really happy with the fit of the Brooks PureCadence, which is tight. I especially love that the heel is really tight. If you have a very wide foot, this is probably a point you should pay attention to. Otherwise, there is nothing special to note about the fit of the PureCadencee. Its Nav Band technology provides a dynamic arch adjustment, which means that the shoe always fits perfectly around the foot.
- Heel: Flat
- Midfoot: Medium to low volume
- Forefoot: Medium
- Toe height: Medium to low
- Arch structure: Medium to high
- Shoe shape: Semi-curved
In fine clothes
Brooks PureCadence is for running on asphalt and track. That is, harder surfaces and the shoe therefore also runs excellently on harder gravel paths or for running on grass. However, I am not impressed with the grip on single trails and forest paths, where you quickly start to slide around a bit and cannot get enough power in your run.
Price level
The recommended price of Brooks PureCadence 1300 kr is at a level that I actually find quite reliable for running shoes in a higher performance spectrum. Where the film breaks down for me is in terms of durability (only 400-500 km), where I think the price per km run is a bit high. Fortunately, you can find Brooks PureCadence cheaper online. It is often on sale or on sale. Right now, you can buy PureCadence cheapest at (Produktet er udgået) ((Produktet er udgået) kroner)
Weight
Master: 260 grams in size 42
Lady: 212 grams in size 39
Although the Brooks PureCadence provides good pronation support, this has not meant that the weight has increased. It is still a lightweight running shoe, with a focus on performance. You get the support without any other unnecessary weight.
Shoe type
A minimalist running shoe that promotes natural running. PureCadence is aimed at those who want to try their hand at a more natural running style. With its low weight, you can use the shoe for both training and competitions. A versatile running shoe.
Heel drop
As mentioned a few times, the Brooks PureCadence has a low heel to toe drop of 5mm, which gives you a more natural running style, where you will experience running more on the midfoot and forefoot. This helps strengthen the foot muscles and can give you a more powerful run. So you can run the way your body was built to run. It’s not quite like barefoot running, but we’re getting close.
Part 2 – The more technical structure
Outsole
The outsole has a different and really interesting outsole, which is divided into several sections. The pronation control itself starts already in the outsole. At Brooks they focus a lot on the anatomically correct, which also means that the outsole is constructed with an anatomically correct fit, which feels comfortable and allows the foot to move naturally in its full range-of-motion. The grip in the outsole means that the shoe is mainly intended for running on asphalt and track. On a harder gravel path, the running shoe also works really well, while I have experienced that on single trails there is not enough grip to get an effective run.
Midsole
In the midsole you will find both stability-enhancing technologies and shock absorption that effectively distributes the pressure from your steps without it being exaggerated. This way you do not lose the natural running sensation and the foot will strengthen the internal muscles. The midsole consists of Brooks DNA, which is a groundbreaking shock absorption that gives you adapted shock absorption, regardless of weight and running speed. Brooks DNA reacts to each and every one of your steps and distributes the shock and provides ideal comfort and protection at all speeds.
Heel
The heel is perfectly rounded to mimic your running stride perfectly. The rounded heel gives you the optimal start to your running movement, allowing you to transfer as much of the force from the landing as possible through the midfoot and out to the forefoot forefoot.
Midfoot
The power and movement comes through the shaped medial midfoot, which helps provide pronation control and more support. The wider and integrated Nav Band, ensures that the shoe has good torsional stiffness and transfers as much power as possible to the front. This stability and support gives you the feeling of being propped up without feeling restricted by the shoe.
Forefoot
In the forefoot, Brooks PureCadence has superior flex, which gives you a powerful push-off, where you utilize all your muscles in the foot to create momentum and run faster.
Upper part
The entire shoe, and especially the upper, focuses on an anatomical structure that hugs the foot and gives your foot the freedom to move naturally.
PureCadence for men and women
Men’s PureCadence
I have tested and reviewed the men’s model, so everything you read in this guide to the Brooks PureCadence will relate to the men’s running shoe. However, if you are looking for the women’s model, you will find that most of it also applies to the women’s shoe.
Women’s PureCadence
In general, the running shoe is the same for both men and women, but there are some minor differences. In addition to the width of the shoe, which I will discuss in more detail below, the Brooks PureCadence is also a bit more flexible than the men’s model.
The difference between the men’s and women’s model
In the technology behind Brooks PureCadence there is no difference between the men’s and women’s models. In terms of design you will of course find some more feminine color choices and styles than the women’s running shoes. At the same time there is a slight difference in the widths of the shoe. Both men’s and women’s models keep to the standard width for running shoes. For men this is Width D and for women it isWidth B.
Get behind the good running shoes
Brooks PureCadence comes with a lot of new technology. Among many other cool details, you can see the following. They have also made cool illustrations of the technology – that makes it a bit easier to understand than text. Take a look here.
All in all, I have to say that I am very excited. Both for Brooks PureCadence, but also for the entire initiative around Pure Project.
A little knowledge about the Pure project
Brooks PureCadence is related to the following similar running shoes: Pure Flow, Pure Connect, Pure Grit. This entire Pure project is a goal from Brooks to spread awareness of natural running, its variations and support it with technology that works. There is a tendency for manufacturers of natural running running shoes to make too little of the content – therefore the shoes are not actually as good as they pretend to be. This is not the case with the Pure series of natural running shoes.
The figure below shows how the different Brooks running shoes are divided. The Pure shoes are highlighted.
As the figure shows, the Pure running shoes are very different from the “float core line” running shoes – these are the shoes that characterize the standard line in their collection. The PureCadence is the one of the Pure shoes that provides the best pronation support, which can be seen by its location on the far right. This means that the PureCadence “locks” you in a bit compared to the other models, which are even more free. You can learn more about the pronation control in the PureCadence in my video at the top of the review.
Find Brooks PureCadence on sale
Offers
You can often find Brooks PureCadence on sale online. But so that you don’t have to spend hours searching for the cheapest prices online, I’ve done it for you and compared the best running stores in Denmark, Germany and England. There’s no reason not to look abroad if you want to find PureCadence on sale.
Sale
Just as running shoes can often be found on sale, you will also often see that Brooks PureCadence is on sale, whether it is in Denmark or abroad does not matter when you order online. It is often easier to find PureCadence on sale online. There is no reason to buy a running shoe for anything other than the lowest price.
Similar minimalist running shoes
Natural running is becoming more and more popular and for the same reason, more and more running shoes are coming onto the market with lower drop aimed at a more natural running style. If you would like to look at other running shoes similar to PureCadence, you can take a look at Adidas Energy Boost, which is also for pronating runners. Otherwise, Saucony Ride also some of the same features as PureCadence. You can also take a look at it lightweight New Balance 890 running shoes.
Conclusion of PureCadence review
I would recommend Brooks PureCadence to others. Especially runners who want to move towards a more natural and injury-free running style. It has worked for me and the PureCadence is a really good shoe as an introduction to natural running. The shoe has some issues with durability, but since you can find the running shoe cheaply online, it is definitely not a dealbreaker for me. If you have skipped the video at the top of the review, you can watch it to get the most important information about the technique and running style. As a final comment, I would like to underline that I am happy to anbefaler Brooks PureCadence til andre løbere.
