What can you expect from the Inov8 Terraclaw 250?

Inov8 TerraClaw 250 – besides being a great name for a running shoe, I’m super excited about this trail running shoe. It’s a shoe that fits me really well and can do so much.
There are some key points in the shoe that I think make it stand out a bit from the crowd:

Protection

Flexibility

Grip

The shoe is built with a really sensible upper that does everything it’s supposed to, it sits nicely on the foot, and it allows your feet to work and breathe. But if you ask me, it’s not the upper that makes this running shoe stand out – it’s the lower part..
There is extra ordinary protection in the outsole, so you don’t risk getting unnecessary shocks etc. through the shoe. So it’s a feature that I really love.
Inov8 Terraclaw 250 is a really flexible running shoe – at least on my feet. I think my feet are allowed to work freely as they should – but without me feeling like I’m skating around in the shoe, and no stability. So lots of flexibility combined with a good amount of stability – that gets a definite plus from my side.

GRIP -It’s written in capital letters, and that’s because I think the grip in the Inov8 Terraclaw is fantastic. I find that pretty much no matter what surface I run on (trail), the shoe manages to live up to my expectations. And it just gives you a different peace of mind when you’re out in challenging terrain, knowing that you can trust your running shoes with regard to grip on the surface.

However, I will not fail to mention that I think it seems a little strange that in this Terraclaw model they choose to have a drop of 8mm (Just like on the Inov8 Race Ultra 290) when I think that Inov8 has gained so much of their success by creating really cool trail running shoes with lower drop. But more on that later in the review.

My first test of the Inov8 Terraclaw 250

I’ve run a lot of kilometers (everything is relative – but now I mostly run on asphalt and not so much trail) in the Inov8 Roclite 295. And I have to say that stepping into the Inov8 Terraclaw 250 is pretty much the same pleasure as I had with the 295. Inov8 really understands how to create shoes that your feet feel good in – or at least my feet feel good in. Because the fit of running shoes is always very individual.
I’ve probably said it before but I’ll say it again – I really think that the shoes from Inov8 have a particularly perfect upper. It’s a feeling of technical setup, combined with a lot of freedom, and good working conditions for my feet.

TerraClaw 250 from Inov8 passed the first try. Like all other shoes, they obviously need to be broken in, but it was exactly the same feeling as I have had with other models. A good fit, and reasonable stability.
I was out on soft and challenging terrain, and I think (personal opinion) that the shoe solved that in a quite excellent way – I didn’t even feel like I had to be careful when changing direction, etc. And I appreciate that. However, it is said that the shoe is actually developed to take over from the TrailRoc series from Inov8, and it is actually a series that is developed for hard and rocky surfaces (for example mountains). But I did not feel neglected in any way by the shoe and its ability to grip the wet surface. So it is just a clear plus for the shoe that it covers both genres.

Overall impression of the Terraclaw 250

That impression is GOOD – even if this running shoe has some flaws (or it’s not flaws, but slightly different setups)
But the shoe as a whole is good – I’ve run several runs in the shoe now, and it doesn’t disappoint me. I like the weight of the shoe, and I like the fit. Then there are probably some who will ask about the softness of the shoe. It has a reasonable midsole – but I have to be honest that I haven’t noticed it that much, and I rarely do with trail running shoes, since I mainly (8 out of 10 times) move on wet trails. And I don’t think the shock absorption is what you should evaluate a trail running shoe on, because there you get plenty of help from the surface.

When I look at the running shoe, it is made of a fabric/material that I consider to be extremely durable after my trips in it. Of course you can see that it has been used – you should be able to, but the material in the shoe seems really robust, and can withstand some beating. And that is perhaps where I think it stands out the most, that it was probably basically developed for the “hard trails””
But a running shoe from Inov8 that I would definitely not hesitate to recommend to others.

What others have said about the TerraClaw 250 running shoe

Stig Hansen, Inov8 is my favorite brand, but but but

  • I really like Inov8 and their approach to trail running, and their way of making running shoes. My overall view of this model is that it solves a lot of my challenges, but I imagine that I can feel that it has come a few millimeters higher in the drop.–Stig Hansen

Sara Hjulby, Running a little in the woods

  • I think this running shoe works really well for me. I'm mostly a fan of asphalt running, but this model handles my winter running in the forest and on wet paths and areas just fine.–Sara Hjulby

Choosing a size in Terraclaw from Inov8

Inov8 is known for being large in size. I went down half a size from my normal size (43) so I use size 42½ in the Inov8 Terraclaw 250. It is important to be aware of this small fact, because combined with the fact that their forefoot is slightly wide, the shoe can feel like a sailboat if you are both half a size too big, and then the nice wide forefoot. So let me be aware of that. You can also find some help here via Inov8 size guide

Men’s sizes: 40,5 – 47

Women’s sizes: 35,5 – 42

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

Great top

The upper is good. There's not much more to say about that. But it's generally for Inov8 that I think they create some really good experiences for runners by being so picky about the flexibility and fit of the upper. The fact that it's also super durable - that only makes it even more interesting.

The combination

I see it as a clear advantage that the shoe is made for one type of terrain, but actually covers another. It just makes this running shoe more versatile and delicious than it already was.

The design

It's a matter of taste and preference, but the design and the whole aura around the shoe just smells far from quality. And it's not a bad thing to look decent :-)

Disadvantages

Dropped

I think it's a bit of a shame that the drop has gone from 6mm to 8mm. Inov8 has come a LONG way in their good combination of flexibility, contact with the ground and technical finesse. So I think it's a bit of a shame that they "raise" the drop

The price

It's not cheap, it has a suggested retail price of around 1300,- and that's not cheap for a trail running shoe. But if you compare it to what you actually get, I (personally) think it's a fair price. And you can also be lucky to find it on a good deal.

The wider forefoot

Not really a disadvantage for me, but could be for other runners. If you have very narrow feet, and especially a narrow forefoot, your foot will feel a bit alone in this running shoe.

You should buy Inov8 TerraClaw if…

  • you are looking for a running shoe for both wet and hard trails
  • you are a supporter of thorough quality
  • you want to be sure of full support from your running shoe for challenging terrains

Analysis Part 1: Who is the Inov8 Terraclaw 250 aimed at?

Running style

For the neutral running style. But I don’t really think running style is THAT important when we’re talking about trail running shoes.

I find that even though when I run on the road I feel best with good support for my pronation, I don’t feel anything missing in this trail running shoe when I’m rushing out there. (Remember, it’s primarily “wet” trails that I run in)

Fit

A good fit (I know it’s individual) But Inov8 has done a lot to adapt the running shoe so that it gets a really good fit. The upper follows your movements, and you get support where you need support. The X-lock technology is the cross that goes over the shoe (on the forefoot) and it helps to keep your foot in place and ensure a good fit in almost any challenge you may give your feet.

Remember the slightly wide forefoot – it’s a good idea to have room for your toes, but it shouldn’t be too much.

In fine clothes

Can be used for both wet and dry trails. The sole of this running shoe is composed of both soft and hard rubber, which gives you an advantage in, for example, running downhill, and also provides very good durability. The sole is durable, even if the surface can be rough.

Did you know that the Terraclaw series from Inov8 was/is set to take over for the TrailRoc series?

Price level

The recommended price for this running shoe is 1300,- That’s too high if you ask me. But the competition is also big in both webshops and physical stores for Inov8 running shoes, so there are opportunities to find it near 1000,-

Weight

Men’s weight: 250 grams in size 42

Women’s weight: 250 grams in size 39

Type of shoe

A running shoe you can use for 90% of your trails, which is why I think it’s appropriate to put it in a category called “mass training trail running shoes.” Because you can challenge many terrains, and not just the easy or extreme ones. That’s why you’ll be able to use this running shoe a lot, and it can handle it.

Durability

The Inov8 Terraclaw 250 is, according to the fact that it is a trail running shoe that can be exposed to a lot of beatings, actually a really durable shoe. It is always difficult for a manufacturer to combine mesh on the upper with high breathability. Because the breathable mesh allows your feet to breathe, so if you want more durability, you have to compromise on breathability. So it is a balancing act. I think Inov8 has hit it really well.

Drop

8mm instead of the “mandatory” 6mm. I personally think it’s a bit of a shame – but I wonder if Inov8 has a clear plan to integrate it into their range. They usually know what they’re doing. But if nothing else, an 8mm drop is probably a sign of a bit more shock absorption in the midsole.

You need to be prepared to come down and run on the ground. A low drop gives you a good feel for the ground, but you also need to be prepared for that. If you are used to higher shoes, there will probably be an adjustment period.

Analysis part 2: Structure

Outsole

I’ve mentioned it before. A really sensible and extremely durable outsole that is built up of both soft and hard components. Gives you extra help when running downhill.

Midsole

The midsole helps create protection from the hard terrain and up into the sole of your foot. In addition, the shock-absorbing EVA foam creates a really reasonable softness and absorption for the body. Dynamic Dascia Band is a technology that is also integrated into the Terraclaw 250, and it is a feature that gives you a midsole that has a little responsiveness. It gives you some energy back, so your steps can be faster.

Heel

Good support in the heel area – you are tempted to say as usual. But you should not neglect it, because the fact that your heel is well held in place and you get the best conditions for a good performance is just so crucial.

Middle

Terraclaw 250 has a good flex, so the middle is good. Good softness and lots of flex and freedom.

Forefoot

The good freedom for the toes in the forefoot, combined with X-lock gives you what you need. Your feet (forefoot) are allowed to work freely, but are kept in good conditions (X-lock)

Upper part

Dirt-repellent, breathable, flexible, and with extra protection for the foot in the right places – how much more could you ask for.

Inov8 running shoes in nature

Men’s and Women’s Inov8 Terraclaw 250

There is of course both a men’s and a women’s model of the Terraclaw 250, but there are not major technical differences. It is more in appearance, and then of course in the weight that there is a difference. That goes without saying. All the technical features of the running shoe are the same.

Find Terraclaw 250 from Inov8 on sale and in stock

My personal opinion is that it’s a bit of a shame – that such a fantastic running shoe – or such a fantastic brand has to struggle in the price segment. Because I know that there is a lot of effort and thought behind the features that this shoe contains, and that of course also justifies the price. But there is a lot of competition both offline, but also online on Terraclaw 250, or Inov8 running shoes in general. For the consumer it’s okay, as they can find the shoe on sale, but technically it’s a bit of a shame.
But you will find plenty of places where they sell this trail running shoe, so you will probably also find a really good offer. Our price tables are not exhaustive of the market, and we do not include everyone, but you could start by looking in it.

Andre Inov8 Terraclaw modeller

Terraclaw 220

A little brother or sister if you will to the Terraclaw 250. But not that it’s bad. Because there are actually some key points between the 2 that you should notice. Among other things, the Terraclaw 220 has a halved drop of 4mm, and the weight is significantly reduced. So it’s a slightly different running shoe when we’re talking about the 220 instead of the 250.

Alternatives to Inov8 Terraclaw 250

It is obvious to mention other models from the number 1 trail brand at the moment, Inov8. They have made a model called Roclite 295, it could be an excellent alternative for those of you who want a trail running shoe that can also handle most challenges..
And if we are going to move on to another running brand, we probably can’t avoid Salomon. Their S-lab series includes a Sense S-lab shoe which could be an option, where you also work very close to the surface, and get a really good grip. Salomon Speedcross (GTX, Pro or the regular one) is also a trail running shoe. Could be an alternative, but I would like to emphasize that it is a slightly different caliber. You get up a little “higher”, and I don’t think the grip in this running shoe is as good.

If you want to see alternatives to the Inov8 Terraclaw 250, we have helped you a little below. Here you also get 3 really good alternatives, which I also think you should look at.

Summary

I’m a fan of versatility. And even though it may not have been the intention from the start, I think this Terraclaw 250 is extremely versatile. It can cover the vast majority of people’s needs for a trail running shoe – and not just cover, but give them a super good trail shoe for running. So a running shoe that clearly gets my recommendation on the road.
