Mizuno Wave Rider 22, what’s new?
The Wave Rider from Mizuno is a classic neutral running shoe that has won over many runners’ hearts over the last 2-3 updates. And the Mizuno Wave Rider also has a lot to offer..
Now the time has come for this shoe to go from its 21st version to its 22nd version. And in the launch of the Mizuno Wave Rider 22, they have chosen to touch on 2 major central points of a running shoe, both the upper and the sole (outsole) are affected by this update.
The upper has never really failed, and was one of the things that runners highlighted in both the 20th and 21st versions. So it may come as a surprise that this is where they have put in the effort. But when you see and feel the shoe, you can understand why. With the new Triple Zone upper, which has become a more ventilated upper, but still with the same fantastic hold on the foot, there was a meaning to the madness when Mizuno chose to upgrade a place where there was no immediate challenge. Well done and well done.
Another spectacular thing that has been upgraded in the Mizuno Wave Rider 22 is the outsole. It made a bit more sense that this one got an update. With the new SmoothRide outsole we now have an outsole with more flex zones which makes the sole more (you guessed it) more flexible and smooth to run with.
The material from which this sole is made is a mixture of rubber and carbon. A composition that ensures the high durability of the sole of the Mizuno Wave Rider 22.
What was new in the Mizuno Wave Ride 21
When Mizuno switched from Rider 19 to Rider 20, we think something magical happened. Now we have to see if the Mizuno Wave Rider 21 can follow the upward curve and positive spiral the shoe is in..
The Mizuno Rider is a running shoe that is great for longer distances – both for training and competition. Which is why the significant update in the Mizuno Rider 21 is fantastic.
The midsole of the Rider 21 version uses a CloudWave plate, which helps to ensure that you, as a runner, have a softer and more natural transition with every single step you take on your run. And when you consider that the shoe is aimed at longer distances, that may well be a big deal.
The Mizuno Rider 21 still has the amazing U4ic technology (foam) which makes the midsole itself 33% more responsive than its predecessors.
In addition, you can still expect a breathable upper that you will love on long trips, as your feet are allowed to breathe really well. You get the optimized outsole which is designed to last longer due to its mixture of rubber and carbon (primarily in the landing phase). 12 mm drop and a weight around 260-265 grams in size 42-42½
Last but not least, the heel has been updated on the inside. The fit around the heel and your Achilles tendon has now become much better, so you shouldn’t notice it at all when you’re speeding out there in your new Mizuno Rider 21.
Mizuno Wave Rider 20 – what did it offer?
The Mizuno Wave Rider 19 was a running shoe that combined the two things that play a role in most runners’ mindset really well. And here we are of course referring to weight and cushioning..
With a weight of approximately 260 grams and a really nice and very shock-absorbing feel, the Mizuno Wave Rider 19 was a real favorite with many runners.
If you liked version 19 of the Mizuno Rider, then you will definitely love the 20 version of this running shoe. The shoe has been optimized especially on its upper. This means that you still have this fantastic feeling from the midsole with the U4ICX technology that ensures you fantastic shock absorption. You still have that controlled feeling that this running shoe keeps your feet perfectly in place where they should be in a neutral running shoe. But on top of that, the upper has now also become even softer and more breathable, so you get even higher comfort on short as well as long distances. Especially on long distances you will probably notice that the Mizuno Wave Rider 20 has been optimized. When you run longer, more heat also accumulates in the shoes, but with the optimized upper, it will now have better conditions for disappearing. And that provides better comfort.
Cool features in the Mizuno Wave Rider
This running shoe is perhaps a bit underrated on the Danish market. When you look at how many really cool functions and features are built into this shoe. At Iloebesko, we think you get a running shoe that is worth far more than you end up paying for it.
Airmesh:
It is the upper that has this built-in function. It is a feature in the Wave Rider that allows the feet to breathe in a quite unique way. I must say that we have been very surprised by this effect in getting moisture away from the feet.
Dynamotionfit:
It is a feature that is built into the shoe itself, and which helps to optimize the fit and, not least, the way your feet are allowed to move.
Dynamotionfit:
It is a feature that is built into the shoe itself, and which helps to optimize the fit and, not least, the way your feet are allowed to move.
Premium Insock:
The Mizuno Wave Rider features a removable inner sock inside the shoe. It of course provides a good grip around your foot, but the most important feature of such an update is that you can take this sock out, and in this way allow the shoe to breathe and recover, so that it is always fresh and well ventilated.
SmoothRide:
An effect built into the Mizuno Wave Rider to optimize rapid acceleration and to provide the smoothest and most focused approach when running. You will be able to feel the responsive take-off of this feature, and feel that the shoe is eager to help you with speed and pace.
X10:
A reinforced and improved carbon combination in the heel of the Mizuno Wave Rider. And this feature is included to give the shoe longer life at specially selected points. Many runners start their “impact” right here, and therefore this part of a running shoe is very often extra exposed.
U4ICX:
It is the midsole material on Mizuno running shoes, and therefore also on a Wave Rider. It stands out by being super light and giving a completely unique “feedback” to your feet. You will definitely be able to feel a very soft “bounch”. U4ICX is a further development of the Mizuno U4IC midsole which was known for its great softness. In the X model you get just a little more, and you will especially be able to feel it on longer runs. Because the material is extremely light, but super soft.
That’s why, in the Mizuno Wave Rider, compared to similar running shoes from other manufacturers, you can get such a light running shoe with such high comfort.
Mizuno Wave Rider men and women on sale and special offers
A large group of runners have been asking for an all-round running shoe for runners with a neutral or supinating running style. The Mizuno Wave Rider 18 is an excellent value for money running shoe that in several ways lives up to the quality of the most expensive running shoes.
If you are looking for Mizuno Rider for men or women, there is rarely a reason to buy them at full price.
It can be difficult to find them on sale or at special offers, but if you can, there is of course no reason to go to a physical store and buy them.
With the Mizuno Wave Rider you get a running shoe that works on many different surfaces and has been developed for decades with the aim of serving the determined runner.

Mizuno Rider has had weight problems for many years, so to speak. What I mean by that is that they have experienced an increase in weight in their running shoes. Increased weight means more resistance during running. More resistance means lower speed. That is why it has been difficult to break personal records for many years. A statement from Kristine Bor, who has just switched from the popular Asics Gel Nimbus for this shoe:
I think the fit is really good in the Mizuno Rider. Asics are known for having a very compact heel. That’s why I was a little worried when I switched to Mizuno. I was very positively surprised.
New times have come. The latest version of the Mizuno Rider has become a bit lighter. This makes the shoe a good classic for those of you with a pronated running style. The weight reduction comes primarily in the form of new material choices and fewer pieces of material. If you would like to read more opinions, you can take a look at Runnersworld overview of the shoe.
A little about the quality of Mizuno Rider
Mizuno Wave Rider is actually a quite light and stable running shoe. You get a lot of shock absorption for the grams so to speak. Mizuno has built the shoe around their concept of control and flexibility. This means that you as a runner will never feel locked in. The shoe is good for accelerations and you can easily make quick changes of direction, as you have good control over the shoe.
The Mizuno Rider features AP+ technology. It wasn’t mentioned earlier in the article. I love this innovative feature that creates the necessary stability for a running shoe. With every step, you’ll feel how the shoe takes you from landing to take-off with ease and comfort.
Wave technology
The shock absorption is built on Wave technology. It is also used in other of their top running shoes – for example the Mizuno Nirvana, which is the counterpart to the Rider, just for runners with a pronated running style.
The Wave Rider cushioning means that you put less stress on your bones and a little less. You land relatively softly even on very hard surfaces. Wave is very stable and lasts many kilometers. The name comes from the fact that the sole is waves, which spread the shock out over the entire foot.
All in all, the Mizuno Rider is a good, robust running shoe. The shoe can be compared in many ways to the Asics Nimbus and the classic New Balance 1080 – just to give you some inspiration.
