Mizuno Wave Prophecy

Mizuno-Wave-Prophecy-test-reviewThe Mizuno Wave Prophecy is another good and comfortable running shoe from the Mizuno Wave collection. If you are to judge solely by the Wave technology, the Prophecy model is the best so far.

This shoe is made for natural runners looking for extra comfort. The cushioning built into the entire midsole ensures a comfortable run, but also provides good support during long-distance runs.

Introduction

Mizuno wanted to create a shoe that would give the runner more energy so that he could both run longer and optimize his overall performance. This has been made possible with the Prophecy model. With the shoe’s reduced weight and increased comfort and flexibility, you will have the most comfortable and friction-free run possible.

What’s new in the Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3/4?

Mizuno has been making exceptional running shoes for many years, and the company’s main goal is to optimize their shoes with each new model they launch. It was as part of this strategy that the Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3 was designed, and it therefore incorporates some new features.

Using Mizuno Wave technology, this shoe offers the ultimate in shock absorption. You’ll almost feel like you’re floating over the rough road, and the U4ic material in the midsole ensures that every run feels perfect. In most running shoes, the shock absorption in the midsole is made of foam, but in the Prophecy, Mizuno has used plastic and the elastic Infinity Wave.

In addition, this shoe also has a new type of outsole. Unlike other Wave models, which have used Wave technology for the entire outsole, the Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3/4 has a different design on the Wave plate. On the outside, you will find four convex holes, the purpose of which is to try to create a compression that should give the feeling of a smooth transition during running.

Additionally, you will also notice that the distance from the toe tip to the ground is relatively high, which is deliberately designed to give the shoe a better jumping effect. This will clearly be an advantage for runners with a high weight. The Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3 is designed with a new and attractive upper. In fact, it is the general design of the shoe that attracts many runners, as it is creative and aesthetically pleasing, and if you look closely you will notice that Mizuno has designed the shoe with a Japanese theme in mind.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

Attractive colors

The first thing you will notice about the Prophecy model is the attractive colors and design. The shoe is available in an incredible variety of colors, and in combination with the advanced design, this makes the shoe very stylish.

Cooperative

With the Wave plate in the midsole, the Prophecy offers a unique running experience that runners will not be able to get with other running shoes. The spring effect will give the runner a comfortable experience, as his energy will last longer because the shock absorption and spring effect will actually do all the work for him. All he needs to do is let the outsole touch the ground and then he will feel how he is almost carried forward by his shoe.

Stability

The stability level of the Prophecy will benefit neutral runners who have an average to relatively high arch. The firmness provided by the Wave plate will offer stable support for many different types of pronation. In addition, it has gender-specific mesh that adapts to the needs of the runner. The stability is one of the reasons why this shoe is so sought after.

Disadvantages

Too stiff

Since the Wave plate is segmented to the outsole, the shoe will feel quite stiff. Some runners have complained that this stiffness has caused them pain and soreness in their feet. Despite the fact that this shoe fits my needs perfectly, I still find it difficult to ignore this information.

High price

This shoe is relatively expensive. There are other brands and models that are very similar to this shoe in both features and design that can offer a better price, which means that many will prefer them.

Only heavy runners will benefit from this shoe

Mizuno created the Prophecy with the aim of creating a model that would help heavier runners achieve both the support and comfort they desperately need during their runs. I am one of those runners, and I love the way the shoe supports both my feet and legs. Lightweight runners will also be able to use this shoe, but they will not be able to utilize the shoe's features optimally, and therefore will not be able to benefit from the comfort and support in the same way.

Who is the shoe aimed at?

Price

The Mizuno Wave Prophecy is a very expensive running shoe, with a suggested retail price of DKK 1900. Fortunately, you can often find the running shoe on sale, so you can save a lot of money. The Prophecy is a fairly expensive shoe, which is most likely the main reason why runners often choose similar shoes from other brands. Although the price is undeniably high, the shoe also has some unique technical aspects that can make it a good investment.

Neutral arch support

Since this shoe incorporates Wave technology, which focuses heavily on cushioning and comfort, neutral runners will undoubtedly find this shoe very helpful and useful. If you have a high arch, you will need a running shoe with relatively neutral cushioning, and the Prophecy has just the right features to offer this.

Neutral pronation control

The Prophecy is designed for runners who need neutral pronation control. With just the right amount of cushioning and stability, a neutral runner wearing this shoe will be able to control the movement of their feet as they push forward. Terrain

The Prophecy is ideal for running on roads and athletics tracks. However, this shoe is not good for running on gravel or in mud, as it has some openings on the outsole that tend to collect stones and mud.

Use

Neutral runners prefer to use this shoe for daily training, but because Mizuno has made the shoe so comfortable, athletes and endurance runners can also benefit from it.

Durability

Mizuno not only created the Prophecy to offer an even more stable shoe with optimized shock absorption, but also to offer the runner a shoe with increased durability. Since the foam has been replaced by the Wave plate, which is made of thick plastic, the shoe becomes very durable and hard-wearing.

Fit and size

Width-wise, Prophecy is available in D and B. It fits normal sizes, and the heel, midfoot and forefoot areas are all made for a medium-sized foot. If you are wide around the forefoot and you normally wear a wider size than the standard sizes, it is best if you buy the shoe a half to a full size larger than the one you normally wear. The optimal thing would of course be to try the shoe on in a store before you buy it.

Weight

The Mizuno Wave Prophecy men’s model weighs 337 grams, while the women’s model weighs 272 grams. It is therefore not a light shoe, but in fact the heaviest shoe in the Wave collection. This is due to the plastic plates, which are solid and firm. However, the entire shock absorption system will make the shoe feel lighter than it actually is.

Heel height

The heel height of the Prophecy is 35 mm. This is a relatively high heel height, which is probably due to the aforementioned convex holes that can be found on the piece between the outsole and the midsole. The Wave plate and the X10 rubber on the outsole are supposed to improve the shoe’s shock absorption, which also explains the high heel height.

Forefoot height

The forefoot height of the Prophecy is 22 mm. The new Wave plate design is also used in the forefoot and midfoot area, which means that the forefoot height is relatively high, but also that the foot has optimal conditions for pushing off while running.

Heel-to-toe drop

The heel-to-toe drop is 13 mm. The spring effect in the midsole is enhanced by the heel-to-toe drop, which contributes to a feeling of smooth transitions during the run.

Shoe construction

The outsole

Mizuno has created a very attractive outsole on the Wave Prophecy model. It is made of X10 blown rubber material, which makes the sole look both soft and firm at the same time. This material is lightweight, but at the same time very durable and hard-wearing. Mizuno were very precise in their construction of this shoe, and every little detail has been thought of. The outsole is very important as it connects the foot to the ground, and with a sole that gives the runner the best and most energetic push-off, the run will feel like flying.

Midsole

The Prophecy’s midsole is what makes up the entire shoe. You can find an incredible number of advanced features in this area alone. One of them is U4ic, which promotes shock absorption. Another is the SmoothRide technology, which offers gender-specific adjustments and movements. In addition, there is the extended Wave plate, which makes the outsole flexible, and last but not least, we also find the Intercool system, which offers a high degree of breathability. All of these unique features can be found in the midsole.

Upper part

The upper is made of breathable mesh. AIRmesh to be specific. This material covers the entire upper. The OrthoLite Sock Liner helps wick moisture away from the shoe and keeps it bacteria-free.

Mizuno Wave Prophecy’s technical construction

Wave technology is designed to provide a shoe with optimized cushioning and comfort. The Prophecy features two different Wave systems in the outsole. The Infinity Wave system covers the area from the heel to the midfoot and is made of a thermal plastic material that is elastic and shaped like a figure eight. To better absorb the impact of foot movements, there are open cavities in the midsole.

The second Wave technology used is the extended Wave plate that covers the forefoot. This Wave plate allows the runner to save energy, as the material this plate is made of, unlike the foam that is often used here, gives both the foot and leg better opportunities to relax – especially during long distance runs.

In the heel you will find both Flex Grooves and Flex Controls technologies, which make the foot’s movements natural and smooth.

The upper design of the shoe also uses Dynamotion Fit, which provides good flexibility in the mesh material. This technology was developed based on the movement of the foot, leg and muscles, and it allows the foot to move in its completely natural movement patterns.

Offers and discounts

Wave Prophecy is normally offered at a price of around 1200 DKK, but please note that it may well be available at various sales and with advantageous discounts.

Mizuno Wave Prophecy men’s and women’s models

Shock absorption in the heel

I rate the heel cushioning at 6 out of 10. It has a decent amount of cushioning for natural runners, and it offers a good bounce effect. However, the cushioning is not superb, and neither is the softness.

Shock absorption in the forefoot

I also rate the cushioning in the forefoot as a 6 out of 10. The new Wave plate makes the shoe a bit firmer in the forefoot, and depending on the runner this will be an advantage or a disadvantage. Runners who prefer a firm forefoot will of course benefit from this shoe, while a runner who prefers a soft forefoot may be irritated by this.

Stiffness

I rate the stiffness of the shoe as 7 out of 10. As mentioned, the wave plate makes the shoe more stiff, but without compromising on shock absorption.

Stability

I also rate the stability as 7 out of 10. If you are looking for a relatively stable running shoe, the Mizuno Wave Prophecy has a lot to offer.

Similar running shoes

Several running shoes have very similar specifications and features to the Mizuno Wave Prophecy. To help you best consider your options, I have compiled some similar running shoes, which I have also reviewed below.

A similar running shoe is, for example, the effectively shock-absorbing Asics GT-3000, which also aims to ensure a more firm and stable transition during running.

The Brooks Ghost is also a good shoe, but like the Prophecy, it has a soft heel but a firm forefoot.

The Saucony Kinvara is also a really good shoe and the price is close to the Prophecy’s price. Despite the Saucony Kinvara is aimed exclusively at minimalist and neutral runners har It also has the right cushioning that offers both stability and support. Saucony Triumph offers the same features. It uses POWERGRID technology, which provides sublime shock absorption and makes the shoe very comfortable.

Summary

The Mizuno Wave Prophecy is a heavy running shoe. It is often called an “anti-minimalist” shoe due to its many features and advanced design. It is made with neutral runners in mind who prefer cushioning and shock absorption, meaning that many runners would benefit from this shoe. Heavy runners who need extra comfort will also find this in this shoe.

What really sets the Mizuno Wave Prophecy apart from other running shoes on the market are Mizuno’s many innovative technologies. The various aforementioned wave technologies, SmoothRide Engineering, Intercool and Dynamotion Fit all contribute to making the shoe one of the market’s leading models.
I would personally recommend this shoe to slightly heavier runners who are looking for a superb cushioning system and who would like to experience a smooth and comfortable run without feeling shock when taking off or landing.

Wearing the right pair of running shoes will make your run much easier. You will experience less pain and injuries will be less likely, and the shoes are therefore both an investment in your health and your performance. Despite the fact that not all runners will get the best out of this shoe, it is still aimed at a very wide group, and if you belong to this group, you will get a lot out of your investment.
