New Balance 1080 launch version 8
The New Balance 1080 may have always lived a bit in the shadow of the Asics Gel Nimbus. But as we’ve probably pointed out many times, there’s absolutely no reason for that. The New Balance 1080 has always been a fantastic neutral running shoe, and it’s only gotten better and better with each version number that New Balance has released..
We have now reached the point where the New Balance 1080 is on the streets in its 8th version. And all the old and expected virtues of large shock absorption pads and perfect fit are of course still fulfilled. One of the new things that in the last versions of the New Balance 1080 has done really well for the shoe is the Fresh Foam midsole. It was like what lifted the shoe to new heights when it was introduced.
In the New Balance 1080 v.8 you can expect a few good updates to the already good comfort. And then an update to the outsole.
In the upper, they have chosen to work with a concept called double mesh – and this ensures a softer upper that fits perfectly around the foot. It is almost an extreme softness that you feel now, but it is without me thinking that the shoe loses any support. In addition, the heel cap on the New Balance 1080 v.8 has been made in a new design. The heel is always a sore spot for a running shoe. If you don’t feel anything about the heel, then it usually works. The version of the heel cap in the New Balance 1080 v. 8 is a softer and more flexible approach to the cap itself sitting more comfortably around your Achilles tendon. This gives you greater flexibility. And again, I actually think that it is without you being able to feel any support and comfort. I still feel that the heel is in good and firm hands.
New Balance 1080 version 8 has also received an updated outsole, so that you get better grip.
So all in all, there’s no reason for the New Balance 1080 to be overshadowed by anyone this time either. Because it’s completely on par with all other neutral running shoes on the market. We’re impressed, to say the least.
What was new in the New Balance 1080 v7
The last time New Balance came out with a version of the New Balance 1080, they made a quantum leap with big AND good updates.
At that time it went from New Balance 1080 version 5 to 6.
This time it is the New Balance 1080 v6 that is in the spotlight, it has been replaced by the New Balance 1080 in version 7 (v7).
The last time they changed the runners, they introduced this new constellation in the midsole so that it consisted of the technology from New Balance called Fresh Foam. And it must be said that New Balance has hit the mark again. Runners have really welcomed this update, not least because it became an even cooler running shoe to run in.
So this Fresh Foam midsole is of course also what forms the foundation of the New Balance 1080 v7. So this version contains at least as much great cushioning as you are used to.
In addition, you still get a fantastic upper in the shoe, which stands out a bit by being in 2 layers. This gives a fantastic fit, and you retain 100% of your breathability in the shoe. The upper is of course also without annoying seams, so the comfort is super high in the New Balance 1080 v7.
Where we have tweaked the version 7 of the New Balance 1080 a little bit compared to its predecessor is in the heel area. We have received some feedback there, and therefore version 7 now has a slightly lower heel counter, so that the shoe allows your foot to work more freely and flexibly.
As it has been through all generations, it is a neutral running shoe that is perfect for mass training. It has always been really good for longer distances, and it certainly hasn’t gotten any worse since the Fresh Foam midsole was put into this running shoe.

My own experiences with NB 1080
First impressions
I’m not a huge fan of the design of the New Balance 1080. In my head there’s something that doesn’t quite work, especially in the transition from the upper to the outsole. It’s not a dealbreaker though and from what I’ve heard, I’m sure the NB 1080 will convince me and I’ll become a fan once I get it out on the road.
I’m not disappointed on my first run. I hadn’t planned any special run, but I ended up running 10-12 at a fast pace. I simply couldn’t help myself. I’m pleasantly surprised by how well the combination of more traditional cushioning and the lower drop works. I don’t really notice the extra weight, even though I’m used to running in lighter running shoes. I’m really looking forward to getting out and testing the running shoe further.
Verdict after several hundred km
Verdict and verdict, this is probably more of a compliment. I have run several hundred km in the New Balance 1080, and I am sure that there are many hundreds of km left in the running shoe, as it has no obvious signs of wear. It is impressive, and the running sensation is still absolutely as good as it was the first time I went out running in the shoe.
I am really happy with the versatility that the shoe gives me. I can take it with me on vacation, and no matter what I think of to train or how I run, it is a strong partner. It is a really good choice for those who want to run both far, fast and possibly in competitions. NB 1080 does it all in a snap. There are some minor annoyances, which you can read more about further down, but the good running properties clearly outweigh the slight drawbacks.
What do others say about the running shoe?
Kasper Fischer, Korsør, runs 10-20 km/week
Jens Pedersen, Svendborg, Runner 0-10 km/week
Dorte Kelmann, Horsens, 60-70 km/week
There is no doubt that the New Balance 1080 is an extremely popular shoe for the neutral runner. Here is what other runners think about the shoe.
NB 1080 size
You won’t have any problems finding the right size for the NB 1080. The popular running shoe has a completely standard running shoe size, which means you can go for the same size that you always run in. If you’ve just come from a running shoe that is a bit strange in size, you should of course be a little careful. But otherwise, just go for your normal size when buying the New Balance 1080 in the right size.
Since foot sizes are very individual, I have also included data from other runners and what they think about the size. You can see that below. In general, New Balance running shoes are true to size. – læs mere om det på linket.
Advantages and disadvantages
Benefits
Good support around the midfoot
The shoe feels stable and secure

Part 1 – More technical review of the shoe
Running style
The New Balance 1080 is mainly aimed at neutral runners, but can also be used by runners with a tendency to slightly pronate or slightly supinate. The heel has the strongest part of the shock absorption, while in the forefoot you get a more flexible shoe, with less shock absorption and a more powerful push-off.
Fit
You can expect a luxurious running experience. The fit with New Balance’s FantomFit is very comfortable and there are no annoying seams that scratch and press on the inside. Below you can find a little more nerdy information about the fit in different areas of the shoe.
- Heel: Regular fit
- Midfoot: Normal to high volume
- Forefoot: Normal / slightly wide fit
- Toe height: Normal
- Arch structure: Normal
- Shoe shape: Semi-curved
In fine clothes
I have run on many different surfaces with the New Balance 1080. Although there should be no doubt that the running shoe is best on asphalt and other hard surfaces, such as gravel and the like. I think it performed surprisingly well on trails and mudder surfaces. Positively surprised by the versatility of the shoe.
Price level
The New Balance 1080 is a fairly expensive running shoe, although it can be found cheaply on sale online, the suggested retail price is 1450 kr, which is a lot of money. You also get a premium running shoe that can last for many miles. You get quality, but you also get to pay for it. My recommendation is to use the price comparator and buy the NB 1080 as cheaply as possible.
Weight
- Master:Approx. 293 g in size 42
- Lady: Approx. 247 g in size 39
The weight of the New Balance 1080 has found a good middle ground, which ensures it is very versatile. It is in the weight level that I would describe as a hybrid running shoe. It is in the space between lightweightcompetition running shoes and heavier volume training shoes. That’s why I think it’s really good for those of you who want a bit of everything without having to go out and buy more running shoes. With the New Balance 1080 you can get by with one running shoe.
Shoe type
It’s a running shoe that can be used for many things. I’ve used it for both hard interval training, long runs and competitions. The NB 1080 can do a little bit of everything. A super all-round running shoe that doesn’t fit exactly into one segment, but instead gives you the opportunity to do it all. From intervals to marathons and from asphalt to trails. Why be limited when everything is possible?
Heel drop
New Balance itself states that the heel drop in the latest model has become 8mm, and I have measured it to be 8mm. It is a good middle ground between a minimalist running shoe and a more common running shoe for heel-landers. The low drop will “force” you to land more on your midfoot and forefoot and give you a more natural running style, which can also help strengthen the inner muscles of your foot. It is a relatively high running shoe, with good shock absorption.
Part 2 – The structure of the shoe
Outsole
The New Balance 1080 has better grip on a variety of surfaces than you might initially think. I have been very impressed with its ability to run on everything from asphalt to single trails. The outsole is best on asphalt, however. It is constructed of durable rubber, which is durable and ensures that the shoe maintains its properties km after km after km.
Midsole
The midsole provides effective shock absorption without being too much and compromising the natural running feel and powerful push-off. The new foam in the midsole is lighter and has the same performance as in previous models. The midsole strikes a sharp balance between providing good shock absorption and allowing your foot to move naturally.
Heel
The heel features the strongest shock absorption, the shock-absorbing and stabilizing Abzorb Crashpad. This also transfers the force from each step further into the shoe, so you get the most comfortable and secure execution of each running stride.
Midfoot
At the midfoot, New Balance has chosen to reinforce the midsole with their new T-Beam technology. This is a plastic construction that is lighter and provides more rigidity throughout the shoe. This improves stability throughout the shoe.
Forefoot
The forefoot is flexible and features N2 Burst cushioning, which not only cushions every step but also provides a powerful push-off throughout the forefoot. The perfect partner to the more stable midfoot and heel of the NB 1080.
Upper part
The upper is made of synthetic mesh, which provides good ventilation and a good fit, which ensures a comfortable feeling when you run in the shoe. Their seams do not overlap each other and you will not find any irritation points in the stitching. Comfort and functionality, with what New Balance calls FantomFit.
New Balance 1080 for men and women
There is surprisingly much difference betweenmaster and lady the model in New Balance. Although New Balance describes the men’s and women’s models exactly the same on their own website, the reputable online magazine Runners World has found quite significant differences. The men’s model is more flexible and has a lot more shock absorption than the women’s model in the NB 1080. This surprises me, which of course means that you, as a woman, should be aware that I have tested a men’s model, and that you cannot necessarily transfer everything I have written in my review to the women’s model. In addition, New Balance has of course made sure that the women’s model has some more feminine styles, designs and colors.

About the price comparison on New Balance 1080
There are many stores that sell New Balance 1080. I chose to sort through the large assortment. When you do a simple search on Google for New Balance 1080, you almost only get more confused. There is countless information about this running shoe. I have tried to collect the information in one place to make it easy for you. You will simply find the cheapest and best retailers of NB 1080 here. Not all retailers are included. There are several reasons for this.
Either the retailer of running shoes is not E-marked, which is something I care about a lot. Of course, there are good online stores that do not have the E-mark, but why buy something from a store that is not E-marked when you have the choice? The E-mark is an organization that webshops can sign up for.. This also means that they must meet certain conditions that help to make you a better consumer! Go for the E-mark, we do! I only show stores that I think are recommended. The fact that I recommend a store means that you can ask for advice regarding the purchase of running shoes, guidance on running training and general knowledge within the subject. A running store must be able to provide competent guidance.
Alternatives
There are several different options if you want to look at alternatives to the New Balance 1080. For example, you can look at the more affordable Adidas Supernova Glide or what aboutthe legend Nike Air Pegasus Europe’s most well-known running shoe brand, Asics, of course also has a running shoe for the neutral or supinating runner, their popular Asics Kinsei also found on the feet of many strong runners.
Review summary
It’s good enough – the NB 1080 is a great running shoe that can really increase your running pleasure. New Balance running shoes generally last longer than many other running shoes, and that’s another argument for buying this running shoe if you are a neutral runner and want to get the most out of your running training. In my test and review, I have been more than really satisfied with my New Balance 180, and I would definitely recommend the running shoe to other runners. The running shoe gives a very immediate and natural joy when running. A feeling that you don’t get in many other running shoes than the NB 1080.
