New in New Balance Boracay v2
Since it is a relatively new shoe on the market, there are not many previous models in the Boracay series from New Balance. But it is actually the case that this Boracay running shoe replaces another model that had been running under the New Balance umbrella for quite some time. Previous ranking looks like this:
- New balance 980
- New Balance Boracay v1
As mentioned, the New Balance Boracay is the successor to the New Balance 980. And this running shoe was already given a task when it first came to the market. But it must be said that New Balance has done its homework, because the New Balance Boracay has entered both the Danish and foreign markets very well.
And version 2 is now on the streets, and it has again had some updates made compared to version 1 of this running shoe.
The Boracay v2 is still packed with plenty of cushioning in the form of the ultra-absorbent Fresh Foam technology that New Balance has had great success launching. A technology that you can really feel when you’re out running in the New Balance Boracay shoe.
The main update in the New Balance Boracay 2 is made to the upper. But don’t worry, it’s not for the worse. It has been assessed that it will provide a better solution to divide the upper into 2 sections now.
So the part that sits around your foot is still the super flexible and seamless mesh upper that your feet will feel great in. This inner upper helps create the very high comfort in Boracay, and of course (one is tempted to say) ensures the high breathability of this running shoe..
In addition to this mesh upper, a supportive PU upper has been created, which is the part that gives you the support and good hold around the foot. It is this part that is integrated with the lacing on the shoe. This gives you the opportunity to adapt your running shoe even better around your foot, and in this way you will be able to feel that the Boracay 2 has better comfort than previous models.
The outer part of the upper is of course made of as light a material as possible, and with as little covering effect as possible over the inner mesh upper. This way it can be a lighter running shoe, but your feet can also breathe much better.

First impression of New Balance Boracay – before the test started
It just seems like a running shoe that will be super soft to run in. My first thought is actually whether I personally would think it would be “too soft”. Understood in the sense that I don’t like it if a running shoe loses stability, rather than softness..
The top looks really nice. And when I walk around in it, it’s super soft and supple. I’m looking forward to getting on the road and testing it out.
New Balance Boracay review
It’s always fun, and also a little uncertain when a running shoe that changes series has to take over after another popular model from the respective brand. That was also the case for the New Balance Boracay. The questions were many, could it carry on the legacy of the popular New Balance 980? Was there as much cushioning in this running shoe? Would the shoe cover as wide an audience as the NB 980 did? All of this was uncertain.
It was also with a bit of excitement that we had to test this shoe. New Balance, as a running manufacturer, has always done a lot of good for the running world, and especially for my feet personally. I am personally a big fan of the New Balance 1260, and it is probably the shoe I have run the most kilometers in. I have also run in a pair of New Balance 980, although without having reached many thousands of kilometers, but I certainly knew its weaknesses and strengths well.
The first time you step into a pair of New Balance Boracay, you won’t have a second doubt that this is a running brand with great quality control that manufactures this running shoe. A really good fit, and an ultra soft running shoe, that’s what you encounter the first time you put it on.
I personally feel really good with New Balance running shoes, as they fit my feet perfectly, but I still think you should be a little careful about the width of this running shoe, because if I have to say something, it is on the narrow side. Just so you are aware of it. You should be prepared for this running shoe to sit tight around the foot.
My first run in these running shoes wasn’t really that long, I think 5-6 kilometers. A run where I chose to leave the watch at home and just enjoy the nature and the silence, which only you can on a run through the Danish countryside (I live in the countryside)
My feeling for the shoe is good from the very beginning, and of course before the arrival of the running shoe I had read a bit about both New Balance’s expectations for the shoe and also other runners. And one of the things that a lot of expectations were placed on was the new FRESH FORM midsole. And I think from the start that I can feel that it is good. That this will probably be a success.
But the trip exceeded expectations, as I said, not in terms of pace or other performance criteria. No, it went well in terms of getting a sense of where the New Balance Boracay stood in relation to its predecessor, and in relation to other neutral running shoes in that price range and segment.

I was friendly towards Boracay from the first trip, and you will probably also find that the review and test below show that I think this running shoe has great potential, and many pluses. But there are also some minuses, but that’s how it should be. You can read the review and find out.

Shoe size – how to choose the best
Asics Gel Cumulus has a regular and standard running shoe size. It is no problem to find the right size Asics Noosa Tri, as you can safely use the size from your old running shoe to find the right size in Noosa Tri. However, be aware that it may feel a bit narrow in the forefoot, where the volume is on the lower end.
Men’s sizes: 40 – 50
Women’s sizes: 35 – 43

Analysis part 1: Who is the shoe aimed at?
Below we have divided the analysis part into 2. Analysis part 1 is aimed at helping you find out if New Balance Boracay is something for you and whether this running shoe is right for you.
Analysis part 2 takes a closer look at the real facts about the shoe. What it contains and what you can expect from the Boracay from New Balance.
Running style
New balance Boracay is made for the neutral runner. And as mentioned above, you should preferably be a neutral runner to get the best out of this shoe. There’s no point in being a moderate pronator and then using this shoe. You won’t get the best out of that.
Fit
A really great fit. The first version of the Boracay was a bit tight and the upper wasn’t quite what it should be. The second version of the Boracay has a really cool update to the upper, and it now sits perfectly on the foot. This is partly due to the 2-piece upper that is now integrated into the New Balance Boracay..
Seamless upper and Fresh Foam go really well together when we talk about optimal fit and comfort.
In fine clothes
It is a distinctly asphalt running shoe. There is actually the little fun fact that many people find that the New Balance Boracay does best on hard surfaces. If you go out on too soft surfaces with the shoe, then the excessive softness in the shoe does not go well with the soft surface either. So a distinctly asphalt running shoe, and of course you can also easily run on trail systems etc.
Price level
Boracay is for those who want to spend less than a thousand kroner when it comes to running shoes. If you search a little online you will find that this running shoe is usually under the magical thousand kroner.
And at that price point, I would say that you really, really get a lot of running shoes for the money. So it’s definitely not the price that should scare you away with the New Balance Boracay.
Weight
Men’s weight: 270 grams in size 42
Women’s weight: 216 grams in size 39
Here too, the shoe is on the good side. You can easily use this running shoe for your tempo runs, for example. It is of course not the ultra-light tempo running shoe, but I still think it can easily go on fast runs.
Type of shoe
A standard running shoe sounds so negative, but nevertheless that’s what the New Balance Boracay is. But when we say standard, we mean that it’s a running shoe that’s aimed at the general public. The shoe that Mr. and Mrs. Denmark can and want to run in. So not a specialist running shoe of any kind.
Durability
New balance has something to work on. Both the midsole (Fresh Foam) and the upper are a bit fragile. I’m not the only one who has pointed out that the material in the midsole can easily start to crumble and crack. But the upper is also a bit exposed, it should preferably not come into contact with branches and thorns, because then you can be sure that there are frays or cracks in your running shoes.

Analysis part 2: Structure
Analysis part 2 gives you an overview of the different elements on the shoe.
Outsole
The outsole on the New Balance Boracay is a dense outsole, so here too New Balance indicates that it is a running shoe primarily intended for running on hard surfaces. The outsole or outsole is not intended to be able to grip uneven surfaces.
Midsole
Fresh Foam. I don’t think there’s much more to say. A really good midsole that is super responsive and gives you the absolute best conditions for a comfortable run.
Heel
A medium wide heel counter that does what it’s supposed to. You probably won’t notice the heel part of this running shoe that much, which is a positive thing in this context.
Forefoot
There is good flexibility in the forefoot of the shoe. This means that when you take a step, it is done easily and comfortably without you feeling discomfort. Of course, there is both Fresh Foam midsole and shock absorption in the forefoot, so it is soft and comfortable. Due to its good ability to be responsive, you will get help from the midsole in the forefoot every time you take a step (take off).
Upper part
The upper is seamless and very comfortable. It supports the foot really well and has a good ability to breathe. A change has been made to the upper from the first draft of Boracay. From the Boracay version onwards, it has been divided into two parts. So the innermost seamless upper is the one that provides the very high comfort around the foot, while the PU upper, which is like being pulled out over the mesh upper, is the one that provides the good hold in the shoe and the possibility of the unique fit.
Differences in ladies and gentlemen Boracay
There is no difference between a men’s or women’s running shoe when it comes to the construction itself. As always, there will always be differences in the use of materials, so it is natural that a size 43 weighs more than a size 38.
But there are no functional differences between the 2 shoes.
New balance Boracay on sale and in store
There’s a lot to say about New Balance. For many years, they’ve fought a great battle to keep their running shoes out of the price war on running shoes. At first, it was mostly online, but now also in physical stores. They’ve succeeded to some extent. If you look at the models 1080 fresh foam and 1260, not many online shops have been allowed to sell them. You have to go to a specialist store to find them.
New balance Boracay, on the other hand, you can easily find offers and at good sale prices. As previously mentioned, this running shoe often and relatively quickly drops below a price of 1000,- So if you have a little patience, it can easily be found at a sharp price – both online and in physical stores. You can also check our price comparison which presents offers on Boracay from both Danish and foreign running webshops.
Boracay replaces….
We mentioned it earlier. The New Balance Boracay Fresh Form is the model that has replaced the popular New Balance 980 (fresh foam).
Comparison
If we were to make direct comparisons to some of the other running brands, I would say that the New Balance Boracay is on par, or in the same class as Asics would like the Cumulus to be. Nike has their Air Pegasus while Saucony’s offering is their Ride model.
Summary
I’m a fan. Not a hysterical fan, but I think the New Balance Boracay does a lot of things right. It’s priced reasonably, and there are a lot of cool running features in the shoe. So I don’t see why it shouldn’t have its place in the market.
I hope and cross my fingers that New Balance listens to the teething problems that the shoe has had. That they optimize the durability going forward, and maybe also look a little at the width of the shoe. If that comes into place, it will be a running shoe that can sell in large numbers.
