What’s new?

The Nike Flyknit Air Max is the new top model from Nike. The classic running shoe, Air Max, has been combined with the new Flyknit upper to give you a lighter running shoe that still has the popular Air Max cushioning.

The Nike Flyknit Air Max is a brand new model that was first launched in early 2014.

It’s a combination of two different popular technologies, the classic Air Max cushioning and the brand new and revolutionary Flyknit upper.

Nike themselves say that ultra-light support meets maximum cushioning. And it’s true.

The Flyknit Air Max has a very lightweight upper and extremely effective shock absorption in the air-filled capsules inside the sole.

The shoe has reflective elements so you can be seen more easily when running in the dark.

Personal experiences

First impressions

My expectations were high. With the price tag on the Nike Flyknit Air Max, I allowed myself to expect something extraordinary. I was not disappointed. They shine when I took them out of the shoe box and are really cool. I absolutely cannot wait, so I jump into the new Nike Flyknit Air Max right away and tighten them up. They fit comfortably and tightly around the foot. There are no immediate irritation points. I have to run out immediately and go for a leisurely run.

Nike Flyknit Air Max brand fashion style

I think it feels a little strange to run around in Flyknit Air Max, there is really a lot of shock absorption and they are definitely prone to landing on the heel a lot. Something I usually try to avoid in my more minimalist running shoes that I usually run in. After a few kilometers I am getting used to the feeling, but I must admit that I am a little nervous about whether I have thrown money out the window.

Efter 100 km

After many more km and many more runs in the Nike Flyknit Air Max, I am no longer worried about whether I have thrown money out the window. After a period of adjustment, I have gotten used to the shoe and its powerful shock absorption, and have actually become quite happy with it. Especially for runs on asphalt, it works really well. I have tested the running shoe on trails, but it did not work well, so I stick to runs on asphalt.

Nike Flyknit Air Max image colors

The Flyknit Air Max is still as comfortable as it was when I first put it on, and it’s a pleasure to run in. It controls your run a bit and the heel-to-toe roll is smooth. It’s especially fun for slow runs at a controlled pace. However, for tempo runs and intervals, I’m not so keen on the shoe. It’s on the heavier end and when I want to land further forward on the foot, it feels a bit strange. However, for longer runs at a slow pace on hard surfaces, the running shoe is great!

Nike Flyknit Air Max Review

What have others said about the shoe?

Here you can read what other runners have said about the Nike Flyknit Air Max when they have reviewed the running shoe. Although I go into depth in my test of the shoe, it is always good for you to see what other runners have said. Maybe one of the others is a runner at the same level as you. Right below you can see howusers on Nike.com has reviewed the Nike Flyknit Air Max women’s model. Further down you will find more personal reviews.

Kasper Mønsted, Slagelse, runs 30-50 km/week

  • I have mainly run in Air Max and my Flyknit shoes for the past few years, and now they have combined the two. Awesome! I can't compliment these shoes enough on their comfort. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever run in! But..... I have been logging my runs for the last two years with a sports watch and sensor. How can it seriously be that these shoes are not Nike+ compatible? That is my only complaint. 2100 kr for Nike's top model in running shoes and they don't have the best part of Nike Running.–Kasper Mønsted, Slagelse, runs 30-50 km/week

It is no longer imperative to have Nike compatible running shoes, as you can instead use the Nike+ Fuelband, Nike+ app, Nike+ Sports Watch, etc. to track your daily activity or runs.. Read more about Nike+ here.

Jens Albrechtsen, Haderslev, Runner 0-20 km/week

  • Worth every penny. A running shoe that combines strong technology and makes it play 100%. Looking forward to more colors. It is definitely my next running shoe.–Jens Albrechtsen, Haderslev, Runner 0-20 km/week

Line Petersen, Lemvig, 10-30 km/week

  • A really good choice of running shoes that I can recommend. They are very comfortable and give me a really good feeling when I run. However, I think the price is a bit high. But I've been happy with them anyway.–Line Petersen, Lemvig, 10-30 km/week

Nike Flyknit Air Max size

The size of the Nike Flyknit Air Max is comparable to the size of other running shoes. The shoe is neither big, small, narrow or wide in its fit. You can therefore count on the Flyknit Air Max to fit if you buy it in your regular size. You therefore do not need to think further, or research which size of Nike Flyknit Air Max you should buy.

Nike Flyknit Air Max Training 2014

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

Comfort

I think comfort is the Nike Flyknit Air Max's biggest advantage. Both in terms of the effective cushioning, which I'll talk more about below, and the comfortable feel around the foot. The Flyknit upper fits really snugly around the foot, both at the ankle and midfoot. I feel like the upper is going to fit extra snugly around the foot when I tighten the laces.

Effective shock absorption

The very pronounced cushioning with the Air Max Unit, which is also clearly visible through the sole, is really effective and comfortable. It is soft, without being too soft, and provides good response, without it feeling like there are springs under the foot. For those of you who want a running shoe with good cushioning, it probably doesn't get much more effective than with the Nike Flyknit Air Max.

Comfortable feeling

As a combination of the two above-mentioned advantages, the Flyknit Air Max provides a really comfortable running feel that I had to get used to, but which I later liked. Even running on asphalt, which I often find a bit uncomfortable, is a pleasure to run in the Nike Flyknit Air Max.

Design

There's not much to say here. I think the Nike Flyknit Air Max is really cool and the use of the many neon-inspired colors works really well. It's eye-catching and cool. So cool that you'll probably see just as many people wearing the Flyknit Air Max as sneakers as people wearing it as running shoes.

Disadvantages

Price

The Nike Flyknit Air Max is expensive. Even though we've found the best deals and sale prices on the Nike Flyknit Air Max, it's still not cheap. A suggested retail price of 2100 kr makes the shoe truly exclusive. I think it's a bit overpriced for a running shoe, and I can't help but think about how much I'm paying for the brand and history.

Heel to toe transition

I'm used to running in more minimalist running shoes, and it took me some time to get used to the very strong shock absorption in the Flyknit Air Max. After I got used to it, I found it comfortable and was very happy with it. However, I still find it feels a bit strange with the very shoe-controlled heel to toe transition and miss the natural running feel.

Support around the foot

Although the Flyknit upper hugs the foot, I sometimes feel that the support around the midfoot is not quite sufficient. This means that it is as if the upper collapses a little and gives the foot a flat feeling. I experienced this especially when running at a higher pace, perhaps not quite what the shoe is intended for.

Weight

It is a heavy shoe, even though Nike has done a lot to make the Flyknit Air Max lighter, it is still a very heavy running shoe, weighing in at approximately 363 grams, which is a lot for a running shoe.

Why you should buy the Nike Flyknit Air Max

There are several good reasons to buy the Nike Flyknit Air Max. I have compiled here the most prominent reasons I found in my test and review to buy the Flyknit Air Max. Comfort and design are the big winners here.

  • The Nike Flyknit Air Max is one of the most comfortable running shoes I’ve tried
  • The very popular and widespread Air Max cushioning is really effective, and even on asphalt the impact feels soft.
  • Flyknit Air Max can be used by many different runners across running styles
  • A mass training shoe that can withstand many kilometers of running
  • The design of the Nike Flyknit Air Max is both beautiful and eye-catching.

Part 1: Who is the Nike Flyknit Air Max for?

Nike Flyknit Air Max technology

Running style

The running shoe is primarily aimed at neutral runners, but since it has a lot of effective cushioning, the Flyknit Air Max can also be used by slightly over- and under-pronating runners.

Fit

The fit of the Flyknit Air Max is right in the closet. The thin and breathable Flyknit upper wraps around your foot. The laces are connected to the upper’s Dynamic Flywire, which tightens the entire upper tightly around your foot when you tie your laces. Fit and comfort are one of the biggest, if not the biggest, advantages of the Nike Flyknit Air Max.

In fine clothes

The shoe is primarily for asphalt and hard surfaces. It can be used on well-groomed gravel paths, but the shock-absorbing waffle outsole does not provide enough grip for single trails or other uneven and slippery surfaces.

Price

The price is high, even though you can find the Flyknit Air Max on sale or at a discount, the suggested retail price of 2100 kr is still so high that the running shoe is definitely not cheap. It is a really good running shoe that I have been very happy with, but I still think the price is just a bit steep. It is at least a few hundred kroner more than even the most expensive models from other brands, so I get the feeling that I am paying a lot of money for the name and brand, which I am not a huge fan of.

Weight

Even though the Flyknit upper is extremely light, the shock-absorbing Air sole is still quite heavy. That’s why the Nike Flyknit Air Max also ends up weighing 363 grams for a men’s size 42.

Shoe type

It is a running shoe that is primarily aimed at those of you who run the majority of your training kilometers on asphalt. The strong shock absorption makes it a pleasant experience, and very comfortable, to run on asphalt. At the same time, I would describe the Nike Flyknit Air Max as a training shoe, mostly due to the high weight of the shoe. It is too heavy to be acompetition running shoes, It is therefore really good for volume training and can last for many km on the road.

Drop

I haven’t been able to find the exact heel drop, but it’s definitely quite significant. I would say it’s somewhere between 12 and 20 mm. It’s very comfortable for those of you who land on your heel or need extra support and shock absorption. I had to get used to the very pronounced drop though, as I’m used to running in running shoes that have a somewhat smaller drop, but once I got used to it, I found it comfortable.

Part 2: How is it structured?

Outsole

The outsole is made in Nike’s well-known waffle design, which has been redesigned for the new Flyknit Air Max, so the outsole is even lighter than before, while also distributing your weight more evenly, giving you a better running feel and improved grip in the running shoe.

Midsole

Inside the midsole is the very popular Air Max Unit, which is located throughout the entire foot. The Max Air Unit utilizes closed capsules filled with air to provide the most effective and comfortable shock absorption. In this model, they have used some new capsules that are more elongated to provide a more natural roll from heel to forefoot. At the same time, the midsole has been made more flexible with Flex Grooves, to give your foot a more natural range of motion.

Nike Air Max 90

Heel

The Air Max Unit is largest in the heel, providing the most shock absorption. This is a good shoe for those who land on their heels a lot and roll over their feet during their runs.

Midfoot

There is also Air cushioning in the midfoot, but not as pronounced as in the heel. The area around the midfoot is built to let your foot slide over it, so you can get a good push off through your toes.

Forefoot

In the forefoot there are several, but smaller, Air Max units that give you a stable start with good support for your foot and running style. Nike Flyknit Air Max has focused a lot on improving the running feel and rolling across the foot, from heel to forefoot, and here the specialized Air cushioning in the forefoot is absolutely essential.

Nike Air Max 90

Upper part

The upper is the most revolutionary thing in the brand new Nike Flyknit Air Max. The upper has been woven from just one thread of polyester yarn, which gives it a fantastically light upper. The Flyknit upper has fantastic ventilation, as there are lots of small and microscopic holes in the upper. In order for the upper to provide enough support, and to allow the shoe to have the most comfortable fit, there are several dynamic flywires around the arch, in the middle of the foot, which are connected to the laces. These are tightened when you tie the laces, which ensures a very tight and comfortable fit around the foot.

Difference between women’s and men’s Nike Flyknit Air Max

Apart from the design, there are no differences between the Nike Flyknit Air Max women and the Flyknit Air Max men. Both the men’s and women’s models have a flyknit upper, the new, and redesigned, waffle outsole and the shock-absorbing and flexible Air Max Unit. The Nike Flyknit Air Max for both men and women has some very eye-catching designs with strong neon colors. The women’s models have some more feminine color combinations. You can buy both men’s and women’s Nike Flyknit Air Max in Denmark.

Nike Flyknit Air Max offer sale

Buy Flyknit Air Max on sale or offer online

Nike Flyknit Air Max is not a cheap running shoe. It is very difficult to find Flyknit Air Max on sale or on sale online. Especially finding Nike Air Max Flyknit in Denmark on sale is difficult, but not impossible. I have found the best and lowest prices on Nike Flyknit Air Max and collected all the prices in the price comparison at the top of the review. If you buy in foreign webshops, there can be a lot of money to save on buying Nike Flyknit Air Max.

Comparison with other shoes

A guide and review of the Nike Flyknit Air Max should also compare the Flyknit Air Max with other running shoes, so you have some good options to choose from. In terms of construction, running style and performance, you can compare the shoe with other running shoes. It is obvious to compare the Flyknit Air Max with theother running shoes in the Nike Air series or with other running shoes that have good shock absorption and support around the foot like the popular running shoes New Balance 1260, the very widespread Aasics Gel Nimbus for neutral runners, if you want to look for something in a lower price range, you can look at the good one, but not so well-known Adidas Supernova Glide running shoes. If you want the extremely light and highly breathable Flyknit upper, but instead of a lot of support, you want a more natural gait and running style, try Nike Free Flyknit for natural running.

Nike Flyknit Air Max different models

Summary

Based on my test of the Nike Flyknit Air Max, I can, without hesitation, conclude that it is a more than excellent running shoe for those who want maximum shock absorption and who run most of their runs on asphalt or other hard surfaces. I still think that the Nike Flyknit Air Max is too expensive, so even though it is durable and you can run many km in it, you can, on the other hand, get two more pairs of running shoes for the same price. And they will undoubtedly last longer. However, I still really love the design of the Nike Flyknit Air Max.
