What you should notice about the Nike Free Flyknit Motion

You can’t help but notice it. That’s probably the first sentence that comes out of the mouths of the most experienced runners when they see this running shoe for the first time. “Well, it doesn’t have any laces. Does it stay on the foot well enough?” Just to keep up with what you need to notice, it’s absolutely correct that this Nike Free Flyknit Motion is constructed without laces. You adjust and tighten this running shoe using the 2 wide elastic bands that you pull around your foot and attach on the opposite side. We’ll get into how that system works and whether it works further down.

In addition, it is of course important to note that this model of Nike Free is again equipped with their absolute best upper right now, namely Flyknit. A sublime upper with a perfect fit on almost all feet. It is truly a unique invention from Nike.

We also think it’s worth noting that this running shoe is made (the tested model) as a “high version”. That is, the running shoe has a higher shaft, so you receive extra support for your ankles. A philosophy that is very widespread in the world of football, but which we are now also seeing more and more making its way into many Nike running shoes. In fact, this resembles Nike Free RN Flyknit Exercise a lot in appearance though Nike LunarEpicthe running shoe. However, it’s not entirely appearance that you should go for, they are 2 different shoes. And below we will discuss lots of advantages and disadvantages of the Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit.

nike free motion comparison

You buy Nike Free RN Motion if you hate tying shoelaces or are tired of them coming undone all the time.

You buy this running shoe if you want to stand out a bit from the crowd and love light and flexible running shoes.

If you're looking for an upper that can accommodate even difficult feet, you'll probably end up buying the Nike Free RN Motion.

Are you looking for an all-round running shoe that can also take a beating in the woods? Then you definitely DO NOT buy the Nike Free RN Motion. The shoe is very delicate in its construction.

What have others said about the running shoe?

One thing is what various manufacturers say about their own or competitor’s running shoes. It will almost always be outright praise or outright criticism. It’s always more fun to hear it from other runners. So below you can see a few comments from other runners who have run in the Nike Free Motion Flyknit

Lasse Henriksen, runs 3-4 times a week

  • I really like Nike running shoes, and have run in many different Nike running shoes over the past many years. The Nike Free Motion is a bit different, but I definitely think it is saved by its Flyknit upper. It works every time..–Lasse Henriksen

Lissie Andersen, Loves lightness and high comfort

  • For me, the Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit is what a running shoe should be. It is both light and flexible, and it has a very high level of comfort. I would like to admit that I was a little skeptical that it had no laces, but at no time have I felt hindered by it. Quite the opposite..–Lissie Andersen

Jens Andersen, Everything from 5km to marathon

  • I run most distances. And in my opinion, this shoe is not good for all distances. I think that when I get close to 20km or a half marathon, I think the shoe gives up a bit. It is at this point that my feet get a little sore. But for the short, brisk walks, I think the shoe is almost perfect. It is definitely worth recommending. –Jens Andersen

running shoes without laces

My first experiences with Nike Free Motion Flyknit

Like everyone else, I was also a bit skeptical about the idea when I first heard that Nike was launching a running shoe without laces. But nevertheless, this is something “nerds” love to me. That there are some who dare to throw a new and revolutionary product on the street. Unlike many other times, in this case it was Nike we were talking about. That didn’t make the excitement any less. Nike doesn’t do anything they’re not sure about.
Therefore, it was with great excitement that I awaited this package. As I have mentioned many times before, it is just as much receiving the new running shoes to test. Unpacking them, seeing them for the first time, yes, the first impression really does a lot for one’s perception. You will certainly be able to recognize this when you are out shopping for running shoes yourself.

The Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit is the first of its kind from Nike. It is a running shoe made entirely without laces.

The package arrived and of course I almost tore the box open and took out the shoe in a childish way. The first thing I always do with a new running shoe is of course to put my feet in it. Maybe it’s just to check that it’s the right size that has been sent, but then it’s always fun to feel the fit in the shoe. And here I knew that the Nike Free RN Motion FLYKNIT had won from the start. When Nike sends a running shoe to the market with a flyknit upper, I’m basically sold. This sock-like upper with a sublime fit is just a unique invention. And it has won my runner’s heart from day one. So putting my feet in the Nike Free Motion for the first time wasn’t the exciting part. No, the exciting part was more how the shoe sat when you had to “lace it up”. Which in this case consisted of tightening 2 wide elastic bands that go opposite each other on the shoe upper..
It is easy and convenient to get in and out of the shoe. You can quickly untie your running shoes when you are finished running.

As easy as it looks, it feels. That was my first thought when I laced up these running shoes for the first time. It’s just a simple liberation in itself not having to bother with laces.

My first run in Nike Free RN Motion

Then it was time for the first run in this special running shoe from Nike. I usually always plan a shorter run in connection with testing a pair of brand new running shoes. In many cases, I can run this run completely without electronic aids such as heart rate monitors and the like. I do this simply to avoid being a slave to time. It is important that there is time to feel the first impressions of the shoe, and there must be room for adjustments along the way, etc..
So the first run in the Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit was about 6 kilometers. There is not much special to say about these 6 kilometers. They went exactly as expected. I may have to say that I have become a really big fan of the Nike Free Flyknit running shoe, so the feel of this Free Motion version was pretty much the same as I was used to.
I would like to highlight one thing that I noticed on the first run, but it was really just that the shoe was brand new and my feet were probably just getting used to it. At the end of my run, I experienced pain on the outside of my left foot. Not something I wouldn’t be able to run with, but still a minor annoyance. And you’ll soon discover that it wasn’t a one-time occurrence.

Status after several trips in Free Motion

Now I’ve probably been out running in the Nike Free Motion Flyknit about 10 times. They’ve been trips from 5km to 15km. I have a clear picture of this running shoe..
It should be no secret that I am quite satisfied with its performance so far. But for me, I could use the Nike Free Motion Flyknit for a half marathon (knowing that I would get sore feet – but would achieve a really good time). But when I have to use this running shoe in my everyday training, it is definitely a shoe that will be pulled out of the closet for the trips I plan under 10km and or my interval trips where a lot of pace is required.

The Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit is still a mystery to me in terms of the support in the upper. I have run many of the same runs in my Nike Free RN Flyknit without any tendency to small pains on the outside of the feet. but even after a few runs in this running shoe, I actually experience every time that my feet become sore in the same place on the outside?
One might be tempted to think that this was the only disadvantage of a running shoe without laces. And it could also be that the structures are at play here. In any case, the pain in the foot is so far forward that it is in front of the “band” that tightens the upper. So maybe there is just a little more support in a shoe with laces (like the Nike Free RN Flyknit) and that way you have a greater opportunity to tighten the entire upper of the running shoe around the foot. At least that is the conclusion I have come to..
But as I wrote earlier, it’s not a pain that’s completely unbearable and that’s why I still use my Nike Free RN Motion. Because it’s super easy to deal with. Quick on the shoes, quick off again after the run. And now you’re probably sitting there thinking “well, do red elastics hold well enough?” Yes, they do, and I’ll get into that further down in the review.

Size selection

Here you have to think about it is Nike. For my part, I have a size larger in Nike running shoes than I have in most other running shoe brands. But from that observation, the shoe is completely normal in size. Otherwise, it is always a really good idea to check your centimeter measurements on the shoes.
The Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit has this very tight, but also comfortable upper that you should be prepared for to fit right in to your foot. But this is where you shouldn’t “fall in” and buy the shoe bigger than you normally would. Because then you completely lose the effect and support in the shoe as it was intended.

You are also very welcome to use our size guide

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

The flexibility

With fear of repeating myself. If you have read some of my other reviews of Nike FLYKNIT running shoes, you will have seen this. But you cannot avoid that the flexibility in the upper in particular is unique. It hugs the foot and gives a wonderful feeling. Combined with a Nike Free Flex sole, you can hardly find a running shoe that is more flexible.

The ease

My weight measurement of the Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit says 227 grams in a size 44. And you can't complain about that. If you're looking for a flexible and light running shoe for tempo runs and intervals, for example, I don't think you can avoid this running shoe in your considerations.

The feeling

I know it's a bit superficial to include the "feel" under advantages, but nevertheless I think it's in place. Because the whole of both agility, lightness and flexibility just gives a completely unique feeling when you put the shoe on. I think that should be appreciated and rewarded.

Missing shoelaces

Could easily be included under both advantages and disadvantages, and I have done so (disadvantage: The support) But as an advantage it is mostly because it is so... easy to take this running shoe on and off. It is very easy when you come home tired after a walk to just loosen the 2 elastics and then step off the shoe. It may not be much, but in my eyes it is a clear advantage.

Disadvantages

The price

Unfortunately, this is probably a bit of a trend we see from Nike and their Free series. A bit hard to explain, but for me, who works with running shoes on a different level than the average runner, I don't think the price is too high. But the tendency among the "average Danish runner" is that these running shoes are a bit too high in price. However, I think people forget to look at what and how much technology and development is in such shoes.

The support

The support is really good when you only tighten the upper with 2 elastic bands. But my conclusion is that there is still a bit of support missing in the upper when I repeatedly get pain in the same place on the outside of my foot when I run in the Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit.

The flexibility

As is also mentioned under advantages. but I am of the clear belief that the Nike Free (freedom and high flexibility) concept is also seen as a disadvantage by many runners. Many "don't dare" to take the step into a more free running style, and that is what the Nike Free series represents. But you can also rightly say that Nike Free then wins back the lost runners through sales to the Dane who loves to use a Nike Free running shoe for everyday use because it is so super nice to wear.

The fit

If you are not a fan of tight-fitting running shoes, then the Flyknit upper is definitely not for you. It is created like a sock around your foot, and if you prefer air around your foot, then you should definitely not choose a Flyknit running shoe from Nike.

nike free motion with straps

Analysis Part 1: Who can and who should use Nike Free Motion Flyknit

This analysis part is very much geared towards what kind of runner you should be if you choose the Nike Free RN Motion as your next running shoe.

Which running style

Running style is a difficult thing even for me, who has to deal with running shoes 24/7. Many runners still swear by buying running shoes based on their running test and running style, and that’s perfectly fine. As long as you don’t get any problems or discomfort.
Others argue that the body itself can and should compensate for any weaknesses. And in this regard, antural running has become a big hit. This is where the Nike Free Motion Flyknit comes in. A running shoe completely without support in the sole for any pronation. So it is your body and its natural movement that should make and adapt to your running shoes.

Fit

A tight and unique fit. You have to get used to it or be used to it. The woven upper fits tightly around your feet like a sock. That way you get the feeling of not wearing a running shoe. At the same time, this type of upper has a perfect ability to breathe. Your feet get a really nice indoor climate in the shoe because the feet are so close to the upper that it becomes much easier to absorb moisture away from the foot..
However, I would like to highlight that the forefoot of this shoe (or this series of shoes) is fantastic in the way that the fabric/material fits snugly, but you in no way feel that your toes are being squeezed. It’s a great feeling that is a bit hard to explain, but you just have to try it.

  • Size: Unisex
  • Heel: Tight fit
  • Midfoot: Tight fit
  • Forefoot: Wide
  • Shoe tip: Regular
  • Arch structure: low
  • Shoe shape: semi-curved

Surfaces and conditions

I have run in both rainy and dry weather in the Nike Free RN Motion running shoe. I don’t see any challenges there. So it’s not like you have to take extra care of this shoe if it’s raining when you’re going. But where you need to pay attention is on the surface and choice of terrain. The Nike Free RN Motion is only for firm surfaces and in controlled environments. So it’s asphalt and marked trail systems that I run on when I run in this shoe.
The upper is so fragile and soft (which gives it the unique fit) that it doesn’t withstand much when we talk about branches and thorns and the like. So if you are considering a trip to the forest where the risk of that kind is present, you should be careful. Due to its woven structure, the upper breaks very easily when touching branches and or thorns.

Price level

As I mentioned earlier in the review, it probably makes a difference how you look at it. But if I were to evaluate it from the perspective of an ordinary buyer, I unfortunately think we are buying a running shoe on the more expensive end. Nike is really good at keeping the price of their running shoes low and with a suggested retail price of 1250,- it is far down to the magical 800-900-1000,- that a Danish runner sees as an acceptable price for a pair of running shoes..
My point of view on this is that I don’t think 1250,- is a lot of money for this running shoe. But of course it should also be seen in the light of the fact that I am a big fan of these shoes, and when you know that something works on your feet and it all just works. Then you are certainly willing to pay what it costs.

Weight of Nike Free RN Motion

Here I think that the Nike Free Motion Flyknit must win a lot of running hearts. The shoe weighs only 227 grams in size 44. And if I have to compare its weight to how I think it fits and what support it provides, it seems to me like a really sensible composition. It’s no secret that when you have to reduce the weight of a running shoe, you have to cut back on materials, and thus comfort. That’s not the feeling I have in this running shoe. But that’s probably also why the Nike Free concept is so popular. They hit the nail on the head there.

Type of trail running shoe

Salomon S-lab Speed is a trail running shoe that Salomon recommends for loose or wet surfaces. And that makes perfect sense when you look at their unique outsole design with its unique grip.

Care and maintenance of Nike Free RN Motion

There are no special things you need to be aware of. However, it is always a really good idea to let your running shoes dry naturally, and that also applies here. Then up with the insole and then to dry with the shoe. Even though Nike Free RN Motion has a unique ability to breathe, bacteria still accumulate inside the shoe, and if you want to avoid or postpone (because you probably won’t avoid it completely) the bad smell. So it is important that you air your running shoes every time you have been out running.

REMEMBER: Running shoes cannot withstand a trip in the washing machine…

Drops and heights on the forefoot and heel

The Nike Free RN Motion has a drop of 4mm. This is a relatively low drop, and of course this is related to the fact that the shoe is aimed at natural running. So with this relatively low drop you get better contact with the ground and your feeling becomes more natural.

Analysis Part 2: Technical Review of Nike Free Motion

We go through the technical details that the shoe contains. Therefore, this analysis will certainly also include phrases and words that are not natural for the average runner. We always try to make it as easy and understandable for everyone as possible. .

The outsole

The outsole on the Nike Free RN Motion is a very flexible one of a kind. It has profiling that means that you already get this natural movement in your run via the outsole. There are different zones built into the outsole, and when you look at it you can see how the grooves in the outsole help create the very flexible sole that the Nike Free RN Motion contains..
There is at least one drawback to this particular outsole. The grooves are relatively wide, which means that pebbles and other things can easily get stuck in the sole. A small annoyance.

nike free rear view

Midsole

Nike Free midsole is designed to make your run and movement as natural as possible. The sole is a combination of both soft and firm foam that are built together.

Heel

An anatomically correct sole makes this whole “run naturally” experience stronger. The heel cap allows you to move freely. You will experience that this normal fixed heel cap that you know from “regular” running shoes like Asics Nimbus or Kayano. It is not here because then you would go very far away from the natural run. So a heel cap that allows lots of freedom.

nike free heel cap

Forefoot

Very flexible forefoot that allows free movement and not least a quick take-off. As I have previously described in the review, it is a difficult feeling to describe, but you get a very free but tight forefoot, but where you in no way feel that your toes are being pressed. The good Flyknit upper has its clear glory in this.

Upper part

A truly unique invention, even though it’s not new anymore. It probably won’t come as a surprise to some that I’m a big fan of the Flyknit upper from Nike. You get a woven upper that fits your foot like a sock. It allows your feet to breathe perfectly, and it just completes this “free feeling” that a Nike Free running shoe should have. There is an incredibly high elasticity in the Flyknit material and that’s the method that makes it fit perfectly to your foot..
The upper is seamless, so you rarely experience discomfort with a Flyknit upper. This model tested here has a high ankle, so you get more support for your foot when running.
The upper is equipped with 2 buckle straps for lacing.

Buckle straps on Nike Free RN Motion

What makes this running shoe so special on the market is first and foremost that it is a laceless running shoe. The classic laces are replaced by 2 relatively wide straps that you tighten around the upper.
It’s no secret that I was skeptical about this system, but I also readily admit that there are clearly more advantages than disadvantages to this.

The system is incredibly simple and yet very advanced. There are definitely a lot of development hours behind figuring out how these straps should attach and support. But in short, there are 2 straps that you tighten over the shoe and attach on the opposite side of the shoe. The attachment is with a very solid velcro system that I have not yet experienced has cracked open.
The straps contain exactly the flexibility needed to provide both support and allow you to maintain great freedom of movement.

Analysis part 3. The crooked angle

Analysis section based on something you probably didn’t know about the Nike Free Motion Flyknit.

The Nike Free story

The Nike Free concept is essentially a 4-year process that came into being based on the fact that Stanford athletes trained barefoot. Nike does not let such a challenge pass them by. So they set about developing the Free technology with the fact that it should be just as free and weightless. For 4 years, they studied the runners’ feet and all aspects of it. Then they were able to build a Free running shoe from the inside out. It is the perseverance we reap the rewards of today when we see one cool Nike Free running shoe after another hit the market.

The Flyknit story

A technology that has only emerged through feedback from runners. So the runners came up with their experiences, and then Nike’s engineers started creating the “all in one upper”. The upper is being launched in more and more Nike running shoes. You can easily understand that when you look at the much better comfort results that the Flyknit upper can achieve. The trend is currently that the better comfort and fit you can achieve, the better it is. Nike Flyknit fits perfectly in there.

Comparisons to Nike Free RN Motion

As I started the review by saying, there are an incredible number of similarities between the NIke Free Motion and the Nike Free RN Flyknit. It’s natural since they come from the same series. But besides that, I can’t help but turn my thoughts towards another Nike model. The Nike LunarEpic, which I also like to run in, is also a shoe I would like to compare it to. The idea is a little different but the fit etc. is very similar to the Nike Free RN Motion..
It’s a bit difficult for me to make direct comparisons with other brands. Since the Nike Free concept and Flyknit upper are SO unique, it’s not easy to reference a direct comparison with another brand.

Summary

Somewhere you just have to take your hat off that Nike has done it again. And as I started by saying, Nike doesn’t put anything on the market that they’re not sure about. The Nike Free RN Motion will definitely be allowed to stay in my running shoe wardrobe, but it will have a hard time competing with my Nike Free RN Flyknit. And it does so because there’s the small catch that I get less pain on the outside of my foot when I run in the Nike Free RN Motion..
But that’s why I dare to run in it, and for me it’s still a bit special that the shoe comes off and on so easily.
