What is the Nike Free RN for a running shoe?
It’s a bit like the name, it’s the free running experience you’re going to have with Nike Free.
Nike free RN Flyknit is going to lift a bit of a legacy in the Nike Free family. A family that has been there since 2004, and which has just grown stronger and stronger. The Nike Free RN model is going to take over from the Nike Free 5.0. The whole philosophy from back then is still there. Running in a Nike Free running shoe should be a free and very flexible experience. It is the feet, the muscles, the tendons that should work independently without being affected by too much “hold and support””
This new update, or this new family, has 2 new versions at the time of writing. Nike Free RN, and Nike Free RN Flyknit. In addition, a big brother has already been announced, it is called Nike Free RN Motion Flyknit. It is intended to act as the top model in this new Free running shoe series from Nike at the time of writing.
Apart from that, the Nike Free RN is a super crisp and cool running shoe to look at and feel. If you ask me, it’s a running shoe that could easily win over many feet if we’re talking about a pair of cool summer sneakers that just sit perfectly on the foot and have high breathability.
Nike Free RN FLYKNIT, let the test begin. It must be said that this review actually extends more to the concept of the Nike Free RN than the individual shoe. There are 2 models right now, and a 3rd one is on the way, but the exhaustive review below will be based on the Nike Free RN FLYKNIT model.
My first run in Nike Free RN Flyknit
Like all other tests and reviews, there is probably nothing cooler for a runner than receiving brand new running shoes. The smell when you open the box and putting them on your feet for the first time. Honestly, I just love that feeling and excitement. You can’t always be sure that it fits and sits well? But that wasn’t the case with the Nike Free RN Flyknit. Stop it, I just say. It practically sucked me in from the first whistle. And already there we were well underway with the positive writings about this new Nike Free running shoe.
I was so excited, and it wasn’t just in that “uhhhh I’m so excited” kind of way. No, I was excited about what this running shoe would bring to me when I ran in it. The relationship between Nike Free and I has had some bumps in the road! We’ve tried several times to patch things up, but to no avail. So going out on the road in these Free RN Flyknits honestly gave me a bit of a tingle in my stomach..
As always, I have used my running shoes to walk for a day before the run. Just to get the shoe, and not least my feet, used to it. And here I just have to say, this running shoe fits my foot in a completely unique way. Of course, it is also the Flyknit model, and therefore it fits a little tighter than usual, but wow what a feeling.
So off I went in these running shoes, and the first run was an 8 kilometer run at a pace of 4:20 per kilometer. And let’s just say it right away. I have nothing but praise for family, friends, etc. after this run. The shoe is praised to the skies from my side – and rightly so. Keep it up, it’s a great feeling to run in these running shoes. It just sat perfectly around the foot (I write around – because I really think you can feel the upper is tucked in a little under the foot) It provided good shock absorption, yes, there was no way to put a finger on this experience.
For me it was just in the back of my mind all the time, remember your history with Nike free, and I really knew that the first big and real test for me in this Nike Free RN Flyknit was when we were going beyond the 15km and closer to the half marathon distance. At least that’s where I used to experience huge challenges running in Nike Free.
But wait, this running shoe is so light – I almost didn’t notice, or at least didn’t notice that I was wearing shoes when I ran in them the first time. And it’s still like that when I run runs under 10km. My feet don’t get tired there, and I don’t even notice that I’m wearing these Nike Free RN.
How would it go? Would the relationship last this time, and would we be able to live happily ever after? (Read the answer a little further down in the section: After several trips in the Flyknit rocket)

New things in Nike Free RN Flyknit
There are some really profound things in this new version of the Nike Free running shoe that you need to see and pay attention to. If you ask me, one update in particular is really noticeable, and one that I think will win over a lot of runners, even those who have previously scrapped a Nike Free – but more on that later.
So what is it that takes this Nike Free RN Flyknit to a higher level?
I can’t help but mention the sole, the look you can feel has gotten a significant boost, and that’s perhaps where I’ve heard Nike Free get the most bashing. Understood in the way that it’s where people have had difficulty using Nike Free as a running shoe. The midsole on the Nike Free RN Flyknit is a frame sole with a softer core. The frame contains Phylon foam, and inside the familiar Nike Lunar foam. And that combination is absolutely perfect.
My test has been on the FLYKNIT model, and here I think the upper is better around the foot, and thus there is also improved breathability.
After several trips in the Flyknit rocket
I’ve now had quite a few runs in this model, and already there I perhaps revealed the answer to what I think about Nike Free.
This Nike Free RN Flyknit has been the model that now makes me see myself running in Nike Free running shoes again. Something has happened to the shoe (or me, I don’t know) But at least I have now had a few runs in the Nike Free RN Flyknit that are between 15 and 21 kilometers, and I must say that they haven’t caused me many problems..
I still have the clear feeling that the Free RN Flyknit is an optimized model that fits right into my shoe. Of course, I could easily feel that I had run 18 kilometers in a running shoe that is so close to the ground, and with such a “free” feeling. Of course, I can do that when I run in my Asics GT 2000or mine New Balance 1260. The fatigue is just different when it’s in Nike Free RN. But you know that with that kind of running shoe. That’s also why all the recommendations go towards – when we talk about running in Nike Free – that if you’re not used to it, you should slowly build up. Don’t just go over and run exclusively in this shoe. Your muscles, tendons, joints, etc. should be allowed to adjust to the very free running style.
So after several runs in the shoe I am still very positively surprised. It could easily be a model that will be permanently in my closet.

Overall impression of the Nike Free RN (Flyknit)
Fantastic overall impression. At the time of writing, this fantastic running shoe is in front of me, and I must say that the overall impression is good. I see a complete and complete running shoe. A running shoe that solves the task it is given. It of course has its limitations on long trips (I would not recommend running over a half marathon in it).)
The shoe is now both a running shoe and a casual shoe for me. And while my opinion about that combination is usually a bit lukewarm, I think this running shoe has proven its worth. I will only use it for shorter and faster distances from now on. Of course, I could easily wear this shoe for a half marathon to reduce the weight, but otherwise it will probably be my interval and tempo running shoe.
But as I said, the shoe solves the entire task for me, and the tasks that I set it for, so I just have to conclude that the overall impression from my side is good. You really get a running shoe here that can do something.
Since the shoe is made in so many cool designs, I wouldn’t rule out having a pair in your wardrobe for casual shoes.

Analysis part 1: Who is Free RN aimed at?
Running style
It is a running shoe for the neutral runner who loves to have a light pace running shoe for their short and medium-length runs.
Fit
This is where this running shoe wins a whole lot if you ask me. Because look how perfect it sits on the foot. It really gives a unique fit.
In fine clothes
It is recommended that you stick to solid surfaces. That is, asphalt. And my clear recommendation is that you stick to that. The shoe simply is not suitable for a walk in the forest or on the trail. In my opinion, you can take walks on gravel paths (well-maintained) without the shoe being damaged.
Price level
The suggested retail price is 1100,- I think the price is fair, because I see it was a point of view where I ask myself the question: “Does it do what I expect it to do for me?” Yes, it does, and even a little more, so I actually think that 1100,- is a fair price.
Type of shoe
Natural running shoes. But think about the philosophy of barefoot running. It has been one of the basic ideas from Nike right from the start when they launched Nike Free on the market. To let the body/feet work naturally, and thereby also build/rebuild your own muscles
Durability
Nike Free is basically a slightly exposed running shoe. It doesn’t matter if you choose one model or the other. It’s a running shoe where you have to stick to recommendations for where it can be used, because otherwise I think they get damaged quickly.
Drop
8mm on the Nike Free RN and 4mm on the Nike Free RN Flyknit. In the model I tested (Flyknit), the low drop of 4mm gives me a completely unique running experience. I’m sure many won’t like it, or at least it will take some getting used to, but I think it gives a lot.

Analysis part 2: Structure
Outsole
Grooved outsole which is super flexible. And one of the reasons why running on asphalt is recommended. If you run in the forest or similar. then this coarse profiling will simply collect too much dirt and grime.
Midsole
The optimized midsole in the Nike Free RN is not only super flexible. As previously written, Nike has also optimized by making a frame in the midsole with a kind of foam, and then inside that frame is the well-known Lunar foam core. It really gives a cool experience. A really nice upgrade

Heel
The upper part of the heel is special. Where in your regular running shoes you have a “hard” and controlling heel cap, in the Nike Free RN you can put the heel cap all the way down with your fingers. And that is what gives the unique experience and fit in this running shoe. Conversely, it is also what contributes to the recommendations not to run for too long stretches in it.
Middle
The midsole is ultra flexible, just like in the forefoot and heel, and you get plenty of softness. You don’t experience the same midfoot control in the Nike Free RN as you would in a regular running shoe. You just have to get used to that.
Forefoot
There is room in the forefoot. My feeling when I run is that my forefoot is allowed to “flatten out” so that it looks like a duck’s foot. At least that’s the feeling I have when I run in this shoe..
The midsole is also made with Lunar foam, and the midsole is made with a magical flex.
Upper part
Incredibly soft and supple mesh, which is made in a seamless whole. It provides a sublime fit, and your feet can really breathe through this material.

Summary
If you’ve read my entire review, I don’t think you’ll have any doubt that I’m a fan. I really think Nike has made the necessary improvements to this model, and I think you (I) get a running shoe that meets all the requirements I have for this type of running shoe.
