What’s new in Lunar Eclipse 5

Lunareclipse is mainly aimed at the overpronating runner, who gets good support from the dynamic platform in the heel. However, the midsole is designed so that neutral runners can also enjoy the Lunareclipse. I have tested and reviewed the Nike Lunareclipse below.

The newest model, the Nike Lunareclipse 5, has received several major and minor upgrades compared to the old Nike Lunareclipse 4.

First of all, the design of the Lunareclipse 5 has been upgraded, so the shoe appears more like a whole instead of several parts put together. This may not mean much in terms of running, but for me it’s just a feature that should also be included in my running shoes.

I personally think it’s a big improvement.

At the same time, the Nike Lunareclipse 5 has a new and improved midsole, which provides more shock absorption and a more comfortable running motion.

The mesh upper has become more breathable and ventilated, so your feet don’t overheat in the heat. All in all, some great improvements to the Nike Lunareclipse 5.

Lunareclipse 5 has become a lighter running shoe – that is, a faster running shoe. However, it is only about 30 grams compared to Lunareclipse 4 – but a little is certainly right. The less weight, the more optimal and faster your run will be.

What stands out as a huge improvement in the Nike Lunareclipse 5 compared to the 4 is that it has received more support for the foot via an optimized Dynamic Flywire system.

Personal test of Nike Lunareclipse

My first impression

As with all Nike products, I was absolutely not disappointed when I unpacked my new Nike Lunareclipse. They are beautiful and the color combinations work as usual. I try them on and another feeling hits me. What comfort, the shoe fits tightly around the foot without irritating. I walk around with the shoe a little, and the stability and the stiffer heel construction are immediately felt. I have no doubt that this will give me a comfortable and good running experience.

Nike Lunar Eclipse test

Of course, I immediately run. I usually run in running shoes with less drop, and it is therefore something of a different experience to run with the Nike Lunareclipse. The shoe wants to control your run and you will automatically land a lot on your heel. The transition from heel to toe-off works flawlessly, however. After a few kilometers, the shoe feels a little narrow around the heel. Nothing uncomfortable, just a minor pressure point. However, it also turns out when I get home that I haven’t got a blister or anything. My first impression is positive. The Nike Lunareclipse is not a racer, but more of a cruiser running shoe.

Nike Lunar Eclipse design

After more than 100 km

After more than 100 km in the shoe, I will stick to my first impression quite precisely. The shoe is not a racer, it feels a little too bulky and big, but on the other hand it is really comfortable and pleasant for longer runs at a leisurely pace. The shoe is best on a harder surface, and not too slippery, like asphalt, gravel and the like. On trails it does not have enough grip. An attempt at trail running ended in a muddy experience for the undersigned.

Nike Lunar Eclipse review

It’s like a good luxury car that you get in, start and everything runs like clockwork. It’s a shoe designed for mass training and here it excels. Lots of shock absorption, durable outsole and upper and a comfortable fit. It can be a bit of a hassle to get them tied properly at first with the fly wire, but you quickly get used to it. The Nike Lunareclipse makes running a pleasure.

Howard Andre Has Said About Skene

Jeff Hansen, Sønderborg, 30-50 km/week

  • The stability and support are really good. I think these are the biggest advantages of the shoe. I need a little support in my running shoes and these did the job really well.–Jeff Hansen, Sønderborg, 30-50 km/week

Mary Larsen, Odense, 5-10 km/week

  • I have the red and grey pair. These running shoes are very comfortable and really good to run in. I have shin splints which prevents me from running long distances. These shoes have good stability which allows me to run longer. I think Nike runs a bit small in sizes and you should find a running shoe that is 0.5 size bigger. Overall a really good running shoe.–Mary Larsen, Odense, 15-20 km/week

Charlotte Mikkelsen, Copenhagen N, 20-30 km/week

  • I bought them hoping they would feel like the 3's but they are a bit different. They are tighter and feel like they are a small size. I still love the design and it is a good and stable running shoes. But I honestly think the Nike Lunareclipse 3 was better.–Charlotte Mikkelsen, Copenhagen N, 20-30 km/week

It’s important to hear more opinions about running shoes before making a choice. That’s why I’ve also included an overview of people’s opinions on the shoe, which you can see here.

Choosing shoe size

You don’t need to pay special attention to the size in Nike Lunareclipse. The running shoe is normal in its size, if you come from another brand, you can try our size calculator to find your size in Nike running shoes. There is about a half size difference between the men’s and women’s models of the Nike Lunareclipse. You can assume that you will need the same size in the Nike Lunareclipse as in your current running shoes.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

Eminent fit

The fit of the Lunareclipse is excellent and very comfortable, which is definitely one of the first things you will notice. Although I think the heel is a little too narrow, this is compensated by the good fit further forward in the foot. Around the ventilating mesh upper, the new Dynamic Flywire has been incorporated, which ensures that the entire foot is tightened when you lace up the laces. This gives a tight and secure fit in the Nike Lunareclipse.

A heel-lander’s dream

The pronounced heel drop and strong heel counter, which is carried over into the more flexible forefoot construction, make the Nike Lunareclipse perfect for those who mainly land on their heels. The heel counter ensures you the necessary stability and pronation control if you are a pronating runner. The movement continues through the midfoot to the forefoot.

Luxury running shoes

I have read in other reviews of the Nike Lunareclipse online that runners have called it a luxury running shoe. I would agree. It is comfortable, the shock absorption is strong, the design is stylish, the shoe can run many km and it is stable and supportive. Everything you expect from a luxury product.

Disadvantages

The heel is narrow

While comfort is one of the things I would like to praise the most about the Nike Lunareclipse, it is also worth noting that the shoe is very narrow around the heel. This is part of the design to keep your heel in place and prevent it from sliding around. However, this also means that the running shoe can squeeze a little around the heel. Especially if you already have a wide heel.

Exaggerated heel drop

For any heel-lander, the Nike Lunareclipse is a dream, but for me, who usually runs in more minimalist running shoes, I find the heel drop to be a bit too controlling in my run, which is frustrating. The outsole itself and the cushioning are extremely stable and supportive, but it also makes the running shoe more controlling for your run. I prefer a more lively feel there.

Clumsy

Similar to the above, the Nike Lunareclipse, due to its quite high weight, effective cushioning and comfort, can feel large and bulky around the foot. It is certainly never a shoe I would run competitions in. The Lunareclipse is far too easy and comfortable for that.

6 good reasons to buy Nike Lunareclipse

  • The Nike Lunareclipse has a stable and shock-absorbing platform
  • The running shoe is really good for neutral and pronating runners.
  • Durable outsole
  • Comfortable fit
  • As with all Nike shoes, it has a nice design
  • Comfortable and flexible running shoe that provides a natural run

Analysis part 1: Who is the shoe aimed at?

Below I will go over the different technologies of the shoe more specifically and what it means for you as a runner. It is also in this section that you can find out if it is a running shoe that suits your use and needs. This is where you should follow if you want to learn everything there is to know about the Nike Lunareclipse.

Running style

The running shoe is primarily aimed at an overpronating or neutral running style. The sole has an effective Dynamic Support platform, which gives your foot stability and a comfortable run. The platform ensures that your foot does not fall inward too much. Comfortable and stable platform for longer runs, regardless of whether you are a neutral or pronating runner.

Fit

The Nike Lunareclipse fits the same as many other running shoes. Its size and fit are very normal. However, it can feel a bit narrow and tight around the heel. Below you will find some more specific info about fit:

  • Heel: Normal to narrow
  • Midfoot: Normal volume
  • Forefoot: Normal
  • Toe height: Normal to low
  • Arch structure: Normal to high
  • Shoe shape: Semi-curved

A semi-curved shoe shape means in practice that if you place the shoe on a flat surface, the running shoe will curve slightly. This helps to improve the comfort of the roll from heel to forefoot. For optimal comfort, a semi-curved shoe shape is preferred.

In fine clothes

Mainly for use on asphalt and well-groomed gravel paths. The Nike Lunareclipse has a durable outsole, with good grip on asphalt and other hard surfaces. For more trail-oriented running and walking in the shoe, however, the shoe is not an optimal choice. The grip is not coarse enough for trails and you will experience a lot of sliding around. On dry days it may be possible, but do not try on damp and wet surfaces. It was not a success, I can guarantee.

Price level

The running shoe has a suggested retail price of 1300 kr, however, it is often possible to find Nike Lunareclipse on sale or on sale online. I have collected the lowest prices for Nike Lunareclipse at the top of the review, so you can always find the shoe as cheap as possible. The price level is at the higher end, where you can expect something extraordinary. It is in the level just below the most expensive running shoes.

Weight

The weight of the Lunareclipse is 270 g in a men’s size 42. It is on the medium-heavy end, without being really heavy. For a lot of training shoes, its weight is very reasonable and on the lower end. However, it is still a heavy running shoe if you also want to run competitions and the like. Here it would probably be preferable to have a lighter competition running shoes.

Type of shoe

As mentioned above, it is a mass training running shoe, which especially benefits from its good shock absorption and stable platform. The Nike Lunareclipse is a running shoe aimed at training trips, and preferably many of them. The shoe has a durable outsole and durable mesh upper and can therefore last for many kilometers on the roads.

Drops and heights on the forefoot and heel

In terms of heel drop, the Nike Lunareclipse is a very average running shoe. It has a heel drop of 11 mm, which makes rolling from heel to toe a very natural movement.

  • Heel height: 30 mm
  • Toe height: 19 mm
  • Drop: 11 mm

Analysis part 2: Structure

The outsole

Since the shoe is intended for training purposes, the heel of the outsole is made of very hard-wearing and durable BRS 1000 Carbon rubber, which can withstand many kilometers of running and landings on the heel. The design of the outsole itself with specially molded shapes and flex grooves ensures a very high flexibility, giving your foot a natural range of motion.

Midsole

The midsole houses the incredibly light and springy Lunarlon cushioning, which is a soft, yet responsive, shock absorption. The cushioning itself is stronger in the heel than in the forefoot. The shoe is up to heel landing. The Dynamic Support platform ensures that your foot does not fall too much inward and gives you good stability and comfort.

Heel

The heel is one of the areas of the Lunareclipse that gets the most wear and tear and hard landings. That’s why the outsole is extra durable on the heel. The shock absorption is also stronger in the heel than in the rest of the shoe. The fit of the shoe can feel narrow and a little tight around the heel. This is good for giving the most stable grip on your heel so that it doesn’t slide around inside the running shoe.

Midfoot

This is where the really flexible part of the running shoe begins. The midfoot acts as a transition between the stable heel and the very flexible forefoot. The midfoot also features Lunarlon cushioning elements, which help to provide a more comfortable transition and roll from heel to forefoot.

Nike Lunarreclipse running style

Forefoot

The forefoot has the least shock absorption in the entire shoe, and it is also where the Nike Lunareclipse is most flexible. The flexible forefoot provides a natural push-off, which is the basis for any effective running movement.

Upper part

The upper is made of a durable mesh material that has been reinforced with Dynamic Flywire around the midfoot for an even closer and more comfortable fit. The mesh upper has effective ventilation, so your feet don’t get flooded with sweat. There are no overlapping seams on the upper, which ensures the shoe has a very comfortable feel. Dynamic Flywire is tensioned together with the laces, so the entire shoe tightens up when you tighten your laces.

Difference between men’s and women’s models

Apart from the different colour combinations and sizes offered, there is no significant difference between the men’s and women’s models of the Nike Lunareclipse. Both the men’s and women’s Lunareclipse have the same technical specifications and construction. So if you prefer either the men’s or women’s model of the Nike Lunareclipse, there is nothing stopping you from buying it. When choosing a size, please note that there is approximately half a size difference between the men’s and women’s models of the Nike Lunareclipse. On Nike.com you can see the different men’s and women’s models..

Buy Lunareclipse on sale or offer online

There is a lot of competition on the price of Nike Lunareclipse. That’s why you almost always buy Lunareclipse on sale or on sale online. The recommended price is on the higher end, but you can easily find Nike Lunareclipse cheaper when buying online. You can save a lot of money by buying Lunareclipse abroad instead of in Denmark. If you want to find the best and cheapest price on Nike Lunareclipse, you have to find sales and offers in several countries. I have done that for you in the price comparison at the top of the review.

Nike Lunar Eclipse Men's

Comparable running shoes

The Nike Lunareclipse should mainly be compared to other training running shoes aimed at the neutral or overpronating runner. Denmark’s probably most popular running shoe, Asics Gel Kayano 20,is also a pronating running shoe. Also the durable and hard-wearing New Balance 1260is a good bet. If I have to stay within Nike’s own ranks, the Lunareclipse is very similar to the all-round running shoe Nike Lunarglide. If you want to look beyond the most well-known brands, I can definitely recommend Brooks Adrenaline GTS 14, which is also a running shoe for a pronating runner.

Summary

I have been very satisfied with the Nike Lunareclipse, which I think is above all a fantastic mass training shoe. I prefer to call it a good cruiser, as the running shoe is extremely comfortable and pleasant to run longer distances on hard surfaces in. At the same time, I love the design and fit of the Nike Lunareclipse. I would like to recommend the Nike Lunareclipse. That is why you can also find a price comparator at the top of the review, where you can find the best offers and sales on Nike Lunareclipse.
