Nike Odyssey React becomes version 2

In the wake of Nike launching their Nike Epic React running shoes, we also got the little brother of the top model, the Nike Odyssey React. It has now reached its second version. And not a whole lot has happened, but what has happened is big.
Not only has it increased in version number so it is now called the Nike Odyssey React 2. But “Flyknit” has also been added to the shoe’s name now. Because that is what the primary update of the Nike Odyssey React is all about. It is that the upper now consists of the very popular and flexible Flyknit upper.

With the Nike Odyssey in new clothes, you actually also get a running shoe in the Nike Odyssey React 2 that, due to the update of the upper, is a few grams lighter than version 1. And you do that because the Flyknit material is a lighter invention.
However, it is not a full-covered Flyknit upper like the one on the Nike Odyssey React. Nike has chosen, for stability reasons, to keep something from the old upper. To maintain the stability in the upper that the shoe has received much praise for. So with the upgrade of Flyknit at selected points in the upper, you achieve the same stability, but a lighter shoe, and an upper that is much more breathable. Keep up the improvement.

Nike Odyssey React, you should pay attention to this

Nike launched the first running shoe with the REACT midsole, the Nike Epic React. In its wake, we have the Nike Odyssey React. In many ways, a very similar running shoe. Many of the same elements are repeated, and then the quality has been cut a little in a few areas. There is a difference in the recommended price of 200,- My personal opinion is that it is not the worst deal in the world for me. I think the Odyssey fits better, and for the way I run it also has more to offer.
There are lots of really cool details and features to highlight. If you have read our description of the Nike Epic React, you will definitely notice some duplicates in the highlights below.

A different upper in Jacquard material, but certainly not worse. If you have read other reviews of our Nike running shoes, then there is no doubt for a second that I am a HUGE FAN of Nike’s FlyKnit upper. An upper that is NOT found in the Nike Odyssey React. But the gods must know that I actually think that the upper in the Odyssey React does it better than it does in the Epic React. Not if you only look at the upper, but if you look at the whole shoe, the Odyssey from Nike just fits better and I think it has a higher comfort.

The whole technology around React. The whole structure and that efficiency will of course be something that makes a shoe like Odyssey interesting. It is the midsole in the Nike Odyssey, as it is in so many other running shoes, that is the heart. But in the Nike Odyssey it is just a little more. Because the approach that Nike has had to produce this very special midsole is unique. And when the upper of the shoe is good, and the midsole is just as good, then the whole shoe melts together to be a damn good running shoe..
REACT is seen by Nike as the natural successor to the LunarLon midsole that has dominated the market for many years with great success. And if you have to make a direct comparison, the REACT technology is 13% better than Lunarlon when looking at energy kickback. And that trend is what makes REACT so fantastic. With every step you take, you get energy back, and that increases the speed of your progress. It is a brilliant development and something all runners appreciate.

Personally, I don’t think you can miss the comfort inside the shoe. It’s like stepping into a sock, and it just gives you a fantastic feeling. Of course, you have to be able to live with this tight feeling, because you have to expect the shoe to sit close to your foot.

The Nike Odyssey React can be seen as a kind of little brother or sister to the Nike Epic Flyknit React.

You'll love the Odyssey React from Nike if you want a very versatile running shoe for a wide variety of distances.

You can buy the Nike Odyssey React if you like the tight fit (sock effect) on your feet.

You should probably stay away from the Nike Odyssey React if you're mostly into looser running shoes or for varying surfaces. It's not made for hard surfaces.

What have others said about the running shoe?

See below what opinions have been expressed about the Nike Odyssey React

Borge Kristiansen, Better than Nike Epic React

  • To be honest, I actually think the Odyssey is better than the Epic React shoe. I'm lucky enough to have tried running in both pairs. And the Nike Odyssey just suits my temperament better.–Borge Kristiansen

Karina Thomasen, I am satisfied

  • It weighs nothing and fits my otherwise awkward feet well. What's not to like about the Nike Odyssey React–Karina Thomasen

Knud Olesen, Not a big fan of Nike Odyssey

  • I can easily see where Nike is going with this shoe. But I'm actually not a big fan of it. Doesn't sit properly on my feet. I'm more into traditional running shoes..–Knud Olesen

The first experiences of running in the Nike Odyssey React

The Nike Odyssey React is the test and tried after the Nike Epic React had been through our mill. And that fact alone put a bit of pressure on the Odyssey. Because if you have read our Nike Epic React review, then you probably have no doubt that we (read: I) were very excited about that running shoe. So from the start, the Nike Odyssey had something to live up to.
Another thing it had against it from the start was its upper. Flyknit is my absolute favorite upper when it comes to running shoes – and the Nike Odyssey didn’t have that upper. It was made with a Jacquard upper. And let’s just say it right away. That’s where I was caught with my pants down. Because I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation (yet) where I had to say that an upper actually did better than the Nike Flyknit. But that was the case with the Nike Odyssey. The Jacquard upper in the shoe does something better for me when I look at the shoe as a whole.

The first experiences with running in the shoe were a bit of a feeling. Can it really be true? It was always in the back of my mind that the Nike Epic React had taken us all by storm. So I have to be honest and say that I had that feeling after my first run in the Nike Odyssey: “Can it really be true that I think this is better than the Nike Epic React?” Of course, it is a matter of taste to a large extent. But when I had run in the shoe for the fifth time and still could not see any things that I could highlight as being worse. Well, the conclusion had to be that the Nike Odyssey did better for me than the otherwise wildly praised Nike Epic React..
It’s hard to just put a finger on it and say this is where it’s better. It’s just the whole thing and the whole feeling when I run in the shoe.

Nike Odyssey has been tested on both short and long distances. And I don’t notice a difference. I can easily live with running my tempo runs in a shoe that weighs 250 grams..
And when you know that it’s all supported by a midsole made of React material, you’re really on the right track.

More experiences with Nike Odyssey

There’s not much to say. Everything has been mentioned above. Overall, it’s just a sublime running shoe for me and my feet..
However, it should be mentioned that we haven’t always agreed. And that perhaps says a little about the one thing I think is a bit lacking in the React models we have so far. The outsole could perhaps be optimized a little. I can at least confirm that the one sitting on the Nike Odyssey doesn’t do well in wet weather on concrete around a bend. I had to get down and take off with one side. Luckily, no one saw my little stunt. But it has been passed on. Be careful if you go out in damp conditions with the shoe. The grip on the outsole is not the best in the world.

Choosing a size in Nike Odyssey

Quite normal. However, you should be aware that the fit in the shoe can be on the tight side. Some people remedy this by buying the shoe half a size larger. It can be done, as long as there is no irritation when making the decision. The shoe should fit properly in the heel. If going up half a size doesn’t do it, then don’t do it. It won’t be a success then.
You can always shop for running shoes based on your foot measurement in centimeters. Do you have some running shoes that you know fit in size? Take a look at the tongue (the one that sits over the back of the foot). There you can see the measurement in centimeters. Some manufacturers make it easy and write it under the cm abbreviation. Others may write it under jp. Then you take that number and divide by 10, and you have the measurement in centimeters.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

The fit

If you look at the Nike Epic React, it should be the so-called big brother of this shoe. But overall, I actually think the Nike Odyssey has a better fit and overall feel.

Bodices

Yes, it happened. The day had to come. The day when I actually had to downgrade my beloved Nike Flyknit upper a bit. Or at least for a while, throw it into second place. The unique Jacquard upper just does something for the overall feel of the shoe when I run in it. Flyknit is really good, but when I look at the overall feel of the Nike Odyssey React, I think this upper is better than Flyknit.

Midsole

We would be remiss if we didn't mention the REACT midsole as a clear advantage. It's the heart of the shoe. And stop where it does well. The fact that the React midsole is up to 13% better than the ultra-popular Lunarlon midsole. That makes it something special.

The price

It's a bit crazy that for a mere 1,050,- in the recommended retail price you can get a running shoe with the capabilities that the Nike Odyssey React gives you. Even before it's on sale, it's around the magical thousand kroner mark. Just imagine if you found this shoe for around 800,- I think I'd hoard it.

Disadvantages

Libra

Maybe this disadvantage is a bit easy to come by. But when I hold it up against the Nike Epic React, and that comes naturally without knowing it. Then I think it's a shame that the shoe has to have those extra grams. For me, it's about 25 grams per shoe. It would be great if they had kept it down to around 225 grams like its "predecessor"

Durability

When you say Flyknit, you also say fragile upper. When you say Jacquard, you say a slightly less fragile upper. But unfortunately still fragile. That's the price you pay for softness and high comfort in an upper. There is a greater risk of it being torn to pieces.

Analysis Part 1: Who should run in the Nike Odyssey React

Who can and who should actually run in the Nike Odyssey React? It’s always nice to know if the shoe suits your style and temperament. That’s what we’ll cover in analysis part 1.

Which running style

You probably shouldn’t go that crazy high in your running style if you want to run in the Nike Odyssey React. Of course, I’m not the one to decide that, and if you’re the type of runner who gets mentally upset if you know there’s no pronation wedge in the shoe and you happen to be a pronation runner. Then you should probably stay away from the Nike Odyssey React..
But I would also like to point out that I think that even though there is no specific wedge in the shoe, it is surprisingly supportive. If I were to look at my own running style, I am a pronation runner. But I can’t have that approach, as I test a lot of running shoes in a year, and if I were to only test them with pronation wedges, it would limit me a lot in my work. But I am also convinced that the body can adapt to a lot.
The Nike Odyssey React didn’t cause me any discomfort or irritation when I ran in them. So there’s definitely really good support in them, even though there’s no pronation wedge in them.

Fit

You need to prepare for the trend of the time. This tight and sock-like fit is what you get in the Nike Odyssey React. It’s a super cool feeling for some runners. That they feel like the shoe becomes one with their feet and legs, and you almost don’t notice that you’re wearing the shoe.
At the same time, it can easily be a minus for other runners that the Nike Odyssey is so tight. Some cannot put up with this tight feeling on their feet when they run.

Surfaces and conditions

If you run in the Nike Odyssey React, you have to be prepared to stay on hard (and preferably dry) surfaces. The shoe is ONLY designed for running on asphalt, concrete and similar surfaces. No running in the forest or on uneven paths with loose surfaces. There is simply not enough grip in the sole for that surface, and the upper is very delicate in its durability.

Price level

Absolutely acceptable price level. That for a suggested price of only 1050,- you get as much running shoe as you do in Nike Odyssey React. It’s almost incomprehensible. If you shop online when buying running shoes, you might even be lucky enough to find it cheaper. And that doesn’t make the idea any less crazy.

What does the Nike Odyssey React weigh?

The Nike Odyssey is neither ultra light nor in any way heavy. It is placed right in the middle of it all with its 250 grams. And in fact I would say that it is perhaps on the low side. The Nike Odyssey is on a weight level with, for example, the very popular Nike Zoom Fly.

Care and maintenance of the Nike Odyssey

You can read our guide to washing and maintaining running shoes here. But otherwise, you maintain the Nike Odyssey like you maintain any other shoe. Overall, the most important thing is that you just shoot that thought down right away. So the one about throwing your running shoes in the washing machine. Don’t do it. You may have had successful experiences with it, but suddenly it fails, and that’s super annoying. Take it from someone who has been there.

Drop height in the Nike Odyssey React

The 10mm drop in the Nike Odyssey makes the shoe interesting for many runners in Denmark. You don’t have to get used to a different running style, such as midfoot or forefoot running, by running in the Nike Odyssey. A 10mm drop is a classic drop for the runner who likes to have the “normal” running style, which can also be described as heel landings. That is, where you land on your heel, and then you complete each step you take forward.

Drop heights:
Forefoot height: 18mm
Heel height: 28mm

Analysis Part 2: Technical Review of the Nike Odyssey React

Technical details of the shoe of the more geeky kind. There may be some foreign words here, as it is the shoe’s details and features that are being described.

The outsole

Not the best in the world if you ask me, but if you stick to hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete, then the rubber on the outsole has the grip you need.

Midsole

The midsole is like it is in many running shoes, the very heart and the overarching thing. but with the Nike Odyssey React I think it’s +2%
The React midsole is so new and revolutionary at the time of writing that it does just that for all the shoes it is placed on. The React material has been tested to be up to 13% more efficient on energy than, for example, Nike’s own LunarLon. And if you have tried running in a Nike running shoe with a Lunarlon midsole, then you know it’s true when I write that it is an achievement in itself. Because Lunarlon is truly a fantastic midsole. But with the REACT midsole we have a better and more durable product.

Heel

A good and supportive heel that manages to keep your foot in place when you run. A good hold ensures that you perform well every time you take a step.

odyssey react from Nike

Shock absorption

The relatively thick React midsole provides your shock absorption in the shoe. It gives you maximum shock absorption, which you can really feel especially on long walks. The React material gives so much energy back to you with each step that you not only feel softness when you run, but you also feel better power in your next step. If you haven’t tried the React midsole, do yourself a favor and do it. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Upper part

Not only does it look good, but it also works 101%. For once, this shoe doesn’t have a Flyknit upper. It’s a mesh upper made of the very comfortable Jacquard material. A truly soft and comfortable material that hugs your foot in a fantastic way that is very hard to describe..
The upper is tight-fitting and it gives you the feeling of wearing a very soft sock.
Another cool detail about the upper in the Nike Odyssey is the tongue. The part that sits under the laces and protects the back of your foot. It has a very comfortable neoprene construction, so you will never experience problems with the tongue. It stays where it is and it fits tightly around the top of your foot. It really is a cool feeling.

Comparisons to Nike Odyssey React

You’ll have to look at the Nike Epic React shoe if you need a comparison to the Nike Odyssey React. They are similar in many ways, but I still think there are a lot of differences between them. Among other things, the upper is different, and that makes a lot of difference. But they have the nice React midsole in common.
If you need another alternative, it could easily be the Nike Zoom Fly. It is built according to the same principles. And both of these lightweight running shoes can be used for volume training.

Summary

I had a feeling it would be a long time before I had anything in my mind that would beat the Nike Epic React. The Nike Odyssey was tested maybe a month after the Epic React, so it was time to change my mind. I think the Nike Odyssey is a fantastic running shoe with so many cool features, and at a really good price..
As previously described, it’s hard for me to put my finger on the difference that makes me like the Odyssey better than the Epic React. But overall, the Odyssey shoe just does something better for me.
