It all comes down to this midsole on the Nike Pegasus Turbo very quickly. So it’s of course something you should notice. That in a new running shoe from Nike they have chosen to use the material called ZoomX. A material that until the launch of the Pegasus Turbo was reserved for the Vapor Elite and Vapor 4% shoes..
The ZoomX midsole is not made of pure ZoomX material, however. It is made in a combination with the React material, which you may have become familiar with on, among other things, the Nike React and perhaps the Nike Odyssey React shoes. Beyond that, it’s of course important to note the name. If you’re already a runner, you’re somehow familiar with the name Pegasus. Until the launch of the Pegasus Turbo, the classic Nike Air Pegasus was a mass-training running shoe with a soft and comfortable fit.
In the short term, that hasn’t changed. The Nike Pegasus Turbo is made in such a way that they want to maintain the good comfort that the classic Pegasus has had for countless years. Unpacking the Nike Pegasus Turbo and the first run

Nike Pegasus Turbo has been ordered, and the wait can only be too long. As usual, before buying and delivering a running shoe, a lot of research has been done on the Internet, so that I am prepared for which shoe will hit my doorstep soon. And I must say that after all, it is not all positive comments that have been made about Nike Pegasus Turbo in my research. But we are probably approaching about 97%. So the expectation was high.

When the box arrives and I unpack the shoe, the first thing that strikes me is that it really does resemble a Nike Pegasus running shoe. Both in shape and appearance. But that’s probably also the plan from Nike’s side. It’s more what’s “under the hood” that’s interesting when we talk about the Nike Pegasus Turbo vs. the classic pegasus shoe.
Nike Pegasus has been updated on some important parameters. Not so many visible, but mostly the hidden values. However, I must hasten to mention that definitely ONE thing is very different and visible. Namely the speed stripe that Nike has introduced across the length of the shoe. I have subsequently seen and read studies that there are both pros and cons to this invention. But my clear message about it is that it is not only super cool to look at, it is also useful and effective. If you look further down in the article, you can definitely see what I mean. I definitely think that this speed stripe has its right on the shoe, seen in light of the fact that the front of the upper becomes more stable, and does not “bag” as much. As, for example, the Nike Zoom Fly tends to.
Back to the, or rather THE invisible update that most people can feel and most people want to talk about. Namely the upgrade of the midsole. In the Nike Pegasus Turbo, it is composed of 2 materials. And these are not just any materials. But at the time of writing, these are the 2 best (or at least most proclaimed) midsole materials, namely REACT and ZoomX, each of which is incredibly soft and responsive materials. In the Nike Pegasus Turbo, Nike has chosen to combine the 2 materials into a midsole. And because ZoomX is a lighter material, the shoe is also lighter than the classic Nike Pegasus.

When I have to describe the first run in the Nike Pegasus Turbo, the first thing that strikes me is, “was I actually wearing running shoes?” That alone shows a little about the lightness of the shoe, and I would definitely like to highlight the fit of the shoe. Not long ago, I had the pleasure of testing both the Nike Zoom Fly and the Nike Odyssey REACT shoes. They have both received high praise in terms of the fit and the fit of the shoe itself. The Nike Pegasus Turbo beats them both if you look at the fit objectively. So without having to get any “accustomed” to it, I was able to run in my new shoes. Yes, I hadn’t even worn them at home, as I usually do. Mostly because I forgot, but it wasn’t necessary either..
You will definitely have no doubts when you put the shoe on and run in it. You know right away that this is softness beyond all limits. Softness and responsiveness are in most cases a super good thing. But I have to admit that after my first run in the Nike Pegasus Turbo I had a feeling that it would be too much. Whether the cushioning or the midsole would simply be TOO soft.

Nike Pegasus Turbo is NOT too soft

It doesn’t get too soft, that’s for sure. But if you’re not 110% a fan of this bouncy, very soft, and absolutely extreme “kick-back” feeling, then you should probably look for a pair of running shoes other than the Nike Pegasus Turbo. What you see is what you get.
But in return, I think you get a running shoe that can be used for everything. I haven’t been over 20km on any of my runs in the Nike Pegasus Turbo yet, but my clear feeling is that you can easily do that, and probably twice as much. On the other hand, I have practiced a lot of tempo runs and definitely interval training in the shoe. I think it can handle that. I know that 240 grams is not the lightest shoe in the world, but hey, it’s definitely not the heaviest in the world either. And the effect that the shoe has in the midsole means that you get a lot of energy back with every step, it gives me a super cool feeling when I have to run intervals. That the shoe almost helps me with my speed.

I would go so far as to recommend the Nike Pegasus Turbo for everything from 5km to the marathon. And that is of course primarily due to the unique composition of the midsole. But also the fit itself and especially the heel fit in the shoe. It just fits as it should. Basta.

Choosing a size in Pegasus Turbo

My experience with choosing a size in the Nike Pegasus Turbo may be a bit contrary to what others around the web say. There are writings that say you should go half a size up compared to what you are used to. primarily because of the toe box and the stabilizing “speed strip” that is placed in the length of the shoe. I still use size 43, which is 27.5 cm, so my recommendation is that you buy the Nike Pegasus Turbo in the same size that you usually buy running shoes in (centimeter measurement)

Advantages and disadvantages

Analysis Part 1: Who should run in the Nike Pegasus Turbo

Analysis part number 1 is the part of our in-depth analysis that takes into account the shoe AND the runner. Who can run in the Nike Pegasus Turbo, and what advantages and disadvantages it can give you as a runner.

Which running style

The Nike Pegasus Turbo is a neutral running shoe to that extent. And where with several other types of running shoes that are “neutral” in their expression you can defend that a slightly more stable midsole can easily hold a smaller pronation too. Then the midsole of the Nike Pegasus Turbo is SO soft that it would not be safe to come to that conclusion. So I would definitely recommend neutral runners to look at this shoe. If you have a very strong over-pronation, then the Pegasus Turbo may not be your optimal running shoe..
It should be mentioned that the almost 80 kilometers I have run in the shoe have not given me any noticeable problems. There have been no trips over 20km, and I am by definition not a STRONG pronator runner. I am probably what you would describe as medium pronation.

Fit

The fit is good on my foot. There you have a tight (and high) heel fit as you move forward in an upper that on the midfoot sits really well around the foot, without being constricting. The forefoot is a bit special, as it is kept a little “stiff” and stable by the speed strip that is placed on the shoe. For me it is a really good solution. and that is because the forefoot then sits where it should, and it does not “lump”. There is room for your toes, but without you feeling like you are swimming around in the shoe.

Surfaces and conditions

The Nike Pegasus Turbo belongs to the same category as, for example, the Nike Zoom Fly, the Nike Epic React, or maybe just the current trend. A running shoe should be comfortable to run in. And the upper is a significant factor in that equation. That’s why the upper is usually made soft, nice and very flexible, in the hope of optimal comfort. Unfortunately, this also weakens the durability and places greater demands on the runner. As a runner, you need to be more aware of staying where the shoe can hold up to running..
Nike Pegasus Turbo is a running shoe for hard/harder surfaces. Mainly asphalt, but the shoe won’t blow up if you take a walk in the shoe or on a gravel path. It’s just very important that you pay attention not to get near branches, thorns and the like that can get stuck in the upper.

Price level

This could easily turn out to be the big loser for the Nike Pegasus Turbo. Quality costs money, and that is why the Nike Pegasus Turbo is also tentatively set to cost 1,450,- And in my eyes that is a bit of a hindrance for it. Many people have price as a jumping off point and a magic limit around 1,000,- And it is a long way from 1,450,- and down to 1,000,-
You may of course be lucky to find Nike Pegasus Turbo on sale or on sale. but still a price reduction of 450-500,- is a lot. Then if you are lucky to find this one for around 800-1000,- – then I definitely think I would personally go for it.

How much does the Nike Pegasus Turbo weigh?

A paltry 240 grams. No kidding aside. I know that 240 grams is not the world’s lightest running shoe, but it is certainly not the world’s heaviest either. And if you look at what the shoe offers. Among other things, that it can be used for all distances between 5 and 42 kilometers. Then I think I can justify writing a paltry 240 grams.

Care and maintenance of Pegasus Turbo

You need to maintain your running shoes. Not so much in terms of durability, but perhaps more in terms of odor and comfort/stiffness..

Drop height

10 mm drop in Nike Pegasus Turbo. So we’re dealing with a regular running shoe here. Of course, it’s probably a bit “smart in a hurry” to say that. But when a running shoe has a 10mm drop, it’s a type of running shoe that 8/10 Danes run in. It’s the type of running shoe where you land on your heel and roll forward. The so-called heel-landers.

The outsole

It is very flat. The outsole is not profiled in any way. I think this gives both some advantages and some disadvantages. The clear advantage is that no soil, gravel or stones settle in the sole, because that simply cannot happen. The disadvantage is of course the grip on the surface. There is not much of that if you move away from the hard and firm surface. It is a bit of the same style we see on the Nike Pegasus Turbo, which we also saw on the Nike Epic React running shoe.
The outsole is flexible, and I definitely think it follows my movements as it should, and it integrates with the midsole, just as it should.

Midsole

Nike Pegasus Turbo is the first of its kind. The first running shoe from Nike that is composed of both React and ZoomX material in the midsole. The 2 types are glued together. And not only that, the Nike Pegasus Turbo does not actually have a stabilizing carbon plate in the midsole as you usually see on this type of running shoe. So it is pure enjoyment and pure bounce when you run.
React is the heaviest (if you can call it that) of the two materials. But heavy is a big word to use for a lightweight material like React. But let’s point out that it is at least heavier than ZoomX..
Without having run 1000 kilometers in the shoe since this test was written, I am fairly convinced that the midsole will be hard to beat. You probably know that a midsole reaches a point where it becomes flat and tired, and you thereby lose some bounce and cushioning. So I think that this midsole on the Pegasus Turbo, consisting of ZoomX and React material, will be a tough nut to crack.

ZoomX is currently only available in 3 running shoes from Nike

The Nike Pegasus Turbo is in distinguished company. With the addition of the ZoomX material to its midsole, the Pegasus now joins a, at the time of writing, very exclusive club. This is because this material is used in 2 of 2 additional running shoes from Nike. And these are not just any running shoes. It is only found in the Nike VaporFly Elite and Nike Vaporfly 4%.

Heel

The heel is fantastic. As you can probably see in the picture with both the Nike Pegasus Turbo and the Nike Zoom Fly, it is higher on the Pegasus Turbo. You can’t blame people for thinking that it will be too high and that it will cause discomfort. but I would like to shoot that down right away. At least that is not something I have experienced. On the contrary, I have experienced a heel cap that fits my heel and Achilles tendon really well, and that has a super high level of comfort.

Shock absorption

One is tempted to say another of the shoe’s advantages. The cushioning in the Nike Pegasus Turbo consists of the 2 midsole elements, Nike React and Nike ZoomX. And it is they who give you the sublime cushioning that is in the shoe. However, I must also hasten to say that the shoe is what I would describe as VERY soft. So if you are the type of runner who would prefer a bit of stability/hardness in the midsole, then the Pegasus Turbo is not for you.
But if you’re into this very bouncy and responsive midsole and cushioning that brings SO much energy back to you and the next step you take, then this Nike Pegasus Turbo will probably very quickly become your favorite shoe..
The midsole and cushioning are probably the biggest strengths of the Nike Pegasus Turbo. Both because of the construction with the 2 different materials, but also because of the durability and ability to restore itself. It doesn’t feel like a midsole that you just break down/run tired of.

Forefoot

There are several elements in the forefoot. And we have touched on some of them. But here in the more technical review, it is appropriate to take a look at the speed stripe that Nike has put across the shoe..
There is a material placed over the forefoot that is slightly harder than the other material in the upper. You might wonder why it would be there. If it was “just” for looks, they would have probably just printed it into the upper and not used a harder material. My conclusion is that it is made to stabilize the forefoot. The soft material that uppers in running shoes are made of today. They have many advantages, but one of the few disadvantages can be that layers of the material appear in the forefoot. It’s like the material sits and clumps a little. It doesn’t on the Nike Pegasus Turbo, and I attribute that to this speed stripe. It holds up like the material that would normally fall down towards the foot and fold, it holds it up because the stripe is sewn over the foot and is made of harder material that can hold up the softer material.

Upper part

Quite generally about the upper of the Nike Pegasus Turbo you can say that it is lightness and breathability that come to the fore the most. Or there may of course be “evil” tongues that say that some of the breathability disappears a little with the speed stripe over the shoe, since it is made of harder/thicker material. I don’t think that has anything to say. The little that the stripe takes up, you don’t notice it on the general breathability.
The upper also contains the lacing system and thus also the Flywire system. This “wire system” works so that it attaches down at the midsole and goes up on each side of your foot. It then attaches to your laces. This gives you a unique opportunity to lace the shoe well, and make it close/stabilize exactly as you want.

Comparison of Nike Zoom Fly & Nike Pegasus Turbo (short version)

Below you can find a shorter version of a comparison between the Nike Zoom Fly and the Nike Pegasus Turbo. I have found a few things that I think are very similar to each other, and have come up with an assessment of which one of the shoes wins..
Because basically, I think the two running shoes are quite similar to each other.

Drop height

Both the Nike Zoom Fly and the Nike Pegasus Turbo have a 10mm drop. So the feel is the same when you run. The Zoom Fly basically has a heel that starts higher, namely at 33mm.

Weight

The Nike Pegasus Turbo turns out to be the lightest of the two shoes, according to our calculations. It’s not much, and maybe not even noticeable. But it’s about 8 grams lighter (size 43).

Upper part (front)

Try looking at the picture. This is where I think there is a significant advantage to the Nike Turbo Pegasus. You can say what you want about the “speed stripe” but here I think you can perhaps see some of its effect. The front of the 2 shoes, the Pegasus Turbo seems to me much more stable and much better constructed.

Design

I have included this to highlight that the two shoes are incredibly similar in appearance. The soft and flexible upper built on a soft midsole.

The heel

Still, I would like to emphasize the heel a bit. Look at the picture and see what difference there is. It’s individual what you think fits best, but I’m a big fan of the fact that the heel on the Nike Pegasus Turbo is higher, and thus fits better around my heel and Achilles tendon.

Midsole

If you were to hold them directly up to each other, the primary difference is that the Nike Pegasus Turbo has a layer of ZoomX foam, the Nike Zoom Fly does not. That’s not to say that the Zoom Fly has a bad midsole, because that’s not the case. It’s just built from “pure” REACT material.

General expression

If I had to put percentages on it, and I am doing so now. Then it is perhaps 80-85% that the 2 shoes are similar to each other. There are some things that speak for and against both running shoes. But basically they are very similar.

Comparisons to Nike Pegasus Turbo

This is probably almost a pointless review. If you’ve read the entire review, it probably won’t come as a shock to you that it’s the Nike Zoom Fly and Nike Epic React that I’m bringing up as comparisons..
However, I also want to playNike Odyssey React the running shoe into the equation too. It is very similar to the Nike Pegasus Turbo in that the shoe covers from a low mileage to a high mileage.

Summary

Yes, I’m a fan. I’m generally a fan of the running shoes that come from Nike at the moment. This slightly special style is cool. and the thinking around the midsole, return energy and incredibly soft bounce. it’s super wonderful. You’ll also discover that if you read my reviews of the last 3-4-5 Nike running shoes we’ve tested. There aren’t many negative comments in those reviews. There are minor flaws and room for improvement in all running shoes, but basically the shoes are just fine.
The only thing I see as a hindrance to the Nike Pegasus Turbo. It is its price. I may be afraid that many will think “Oh, it’s too expensive, I’ll “settle” for the regular Nike Pegasus!” And it is an unfortunate trend if this were to happen. Because you get an incredibly nice running shoe in the Nike Pegasus Turbo.
