Different models

I have tested and reviewed the Nike Roshe Run to find out what makes the Nike Roshe Run such a popular shoe.

It’s a simple and beautiful shoe that combines Nike’s well-known technologies with a simple design and a comfortable fit. At the same time, the Nike Roshe Run is cheap enough that you won’t be broke.

The Nike Roshe Run is a newer model, so far there is no 2.0, 3.0 etc.

There are a few differences with the Nike Roshe Run.

Some models have additional technology such as Natural Motion and Hyperfuse technology. This will always be stated in the shoe’s name.

Just like with others Nike sports shoes for men and women, then these also come with a variety of different crisp technologies.

Overall, I must admit that the Roshe Run is not the most technical running shoe.

In fact, it is an extremely simple shoe without very advanced technology.

My personal review of the Nike Roshe Run

First impressions

rating and review as well as prices of nike roshe run

The first thing I think when I open the shoe box is: “Shut up, it’s beautiful”. Simple and clear design with some strong colors. Good contrast between the colors of the upper and the sole. I try it on and walk around a bit. It also looks good on the feet, at the same time it feels nice and comfortable. The shoe fits really well around the foot. Walking and movement in the foot feels really natural. Almost like barefoot. After a short time I’ve almost forgotten that I’m wearing them and just walk around inside. I jump into my running shoes and take them out for the first quiet walk. The start still feels good, very natural style and feel. Later it feels more strained, I start to notice that there isn’t much suspension and shock absorption in the shoe. Comfort is still in the closet.

Nike Roshe Run Review

After 100 km

I never reached 100 km in my Nike Roshe Run. I quickly found out that it is not a running shoe for longer runs or volume in running training. It is an excellent shoe for shorter relaxing runs, but there are better running shoes. I was not satisfied with the shock absorption for asphalt and hard surfaces and the grip in the outsole was not good enough for trail runs. But after I dropped the Nike Roshe Run as a running shoe, I have found my new favorite sneakers. The design and comfort are still right in the closet, even after a long time of use. For me personally, the Roshe Run is not a running shoe, but rather a fashionable and cool sneaker.

Advantages and disadvantages

Below I will go through the advantages and disadvantages I found in my test of the Nike Roshe Run in great detail. It is a really cool shoe that has found inspiration and technology from running shoes, but is designed more as a fashionable sneaker. It is especially here in the mix between the two styles that I think it gets a bit messy. However, I will not say more here. You can read all about what I think are the advantages and disadvantages of the Nike Roshe Run right here. (I have tested a men’s model, but the Nike Roshe Run is of course available for both men and women)

Benefits

I think there are a lot of advantages to the Nike Roshe Run. It is a comfortable and pleasant shoe that you can use for your niece’s confirmation, for the graduation party or for a run with friends. However, the great versatility also has its price. Therefore, it is not all just good, but let’s start by looking at the good in my review of the Nike Roshe Run.

Comfort and fit

The first thing I noticed when I put the shoe on was the great feel around the foot. The Nike Roshe Run fits snugly around the foot without squeezing around the foot or in the heel. This thin mesh upper (which I talk about in more detail below) gives enough, while also supporting the foot so that you don't fall out to one side. Up around the ankle, the shoe provides a little more support to reduce the risk of twisting.

Breathability

Also part of the comfort and pleasant feel of the Nike Roshe Run. The upper is made of a thin, and extremely breathable, mesh material, which gives the shoe a unique feel. The thin upper means that there is always good ventilation through the shoes, so your feet do not get overheated and sweaty. Really comfortable.

Design

I am happy every time I look at my Nike Roshe Run. I really think it is a beautiful shoe. The design is simple and straightforward, but still with many small details that put the finishing touch. This applies to both the Nike Roshe Run for men and women. The colors are strong and nuanced, and the contrasts with the sole have been thought out. This makes the entire shoe appear as a whole.

Minimalism

The simplicity of the shoe is one of my favorite things about the shoes. The shoe goes on just right, there is not too much cushioning. The shoe is not super light, but definitely not heavy either. All this combined with its comfortable fit and the simple design, makes the shoe play as a whole for me. With its natural motion, I almost feel like I am not wearing any shoes when running. At least on shorter and relaxing runs I feel like I am running through freshly cut grass in bare feet. Pure pleasure.

Disadvantages

As mentioned, it’s not all cake with the Nike Roshe Run. It’s a really good shoe, but it also has its shortcomings. Especially its great versatility also means that it lacks some features and attributes. Below you can read the more critical part of my review and test of the Nike Roshe Run.

Lack of suspension

In continuation of my praise of the shoe's minimalism and simplicity, there is also one of the shoe's shortcomings. The Phylon midsole, which gives the shoe its suspension, is nice to walk around in, but running longer distances or several times a week on asphalt, I don't think is comfortable. The shocks become a bit hard and it no longer feels so comfortable. But for a recovery or fun run, it works fine.

Sole grip

Since it didn't really work for me to run more or longer on asphalt with the Nike Roshe Run, I tried more trail-oriented running. On large, well-maintained gravel paths (think around the lakes or the large paths in Amager Fælled) the shoe worked quite well, but on smaller single trails and smoother surfaces the sole's grip wasn't effective enough. A few too many times I slipped and almost fell over.

Sneaker vs. running shoe

I couldn't decide whether to put this in the pros or cons, but finally decided to put this point under cons. It is a shoe that is inspired by the technique behind, and the design of, running shoes, but most of all behaves and is designed to be a sneaker. As mentioned, it looks like a shoe that can be used in almost any occasion. This is its big advantage, but also its disadvantage. From now on, I will mainly use Nike Roshe Run as my sneakers.

Part 1: Review of the shoe – could it be a shoe for your running training?

Running style

The shoe is aimed at the neutral runner. The Nike Roshe Run doesn’t provide much support around the foot and generally gives a minimalist feel when running in it. There isn’t a lot of cushioning, just enough to make shorter, quiet runs relaxing. Good and comfortable to walk around in.

Mesh in Roshe Run

Fit

As discussed above in the Nike Roshe Run review, it’s a really comfortable shoe that fits snugly without being too tight. It feels very natural and comfortable to wear. There’s a little more support around the ankle.

nike roshe run red fashion sneaker

In fine clothes

It is mostly intended for flat surfaces, whether it is grass, asphalt or gravel, does not make much difference. There is not much grip or traction in the shoe, so I cannot recommend going out on single trails or muddy tracks. A good shoe for a run in the city and parks.

Test of Nike Roshe Run

Price level

The shoe is right on the border between cheap and midrange running shoes, with a suggested retail price of around 950 DKK. However, it is often possible to find cheap Nike Roshe Run on sale. For a running shoe it is on the cheap end, while as a sneaker I think it is a bit on the expensive end.

Weight

It is neither a light nor a heavy shoe. The Nike Roshe Run weighs approximately 283 grams (measured in a size 45 men’s model). Its design is inspired by lighter running shoes, but weighs a little more because Nike has prioritized comfort and cushioning.

Type of shoe

After testing it on different terrains, various runs, at parties and family gatherings, I have come to the conclusion that the Nike Roshe Run is first and foremost a great sneaker. The shoe can easily be used for occasional runs, but there are other better and more technical running shoes on the market. On the other hand, the Roshe Run is a very comfortable and very nice everyday shoe.

Heel drop

I haven’t been able to find the exact measurements for the heel to toe drop in the Nike Roshe Run. Probably because the shoe is also intended as an everyday shoe, where the heel drop is not very relevant. But Nike’s natural motion makes the shoe feel very natural to run in. I would therefore say that the heel drop is around 6-12 mm, which is a good drop height for beginners to natural running.

Part 2: Review of the shoe – How is it constructed?

Outsole

The outsole is made with Nike’s Rubber Waffle technology, which you can read more about below. It is a strong and durable rubber, with individual grooves that provide improved grip on the surface.

Midsole

A lightweight midsole that helps keep the overall weight of the shoe low while providing good cushioning for light running and walking. Not quite effective enough cushioning for longer walks on hard surfaces.

nike roshe run everyday style

Upper part

The upper of the shoe is made of mesh upper, which is light and breathable. Perhaps not the most durable construction, but the upper helps to give the shoe a pleasant and comfortable fit around the foot. The upper does not provide much support to the foot itself, but it does provide more support around the ankle and heel. A good combination between a natural feel and a closer, and supportive, fit. The mesh upper does not seem extremely durable. Another reason to keep the shoe away from sharp rocks and other objects on single trails and in the forest.

Part 3: Technology used

A comprehensive overview of technologies and features found in the Nike Roshe Run. Here you can learn everything about the technology that has been used in the Nike Roshe Run. Applies to both men and women.

Full Mesh Upper

The mesh upper is breathable and comfortable. It is a lightweight material that gives you a light feeling around the foot. Most importantly, the upper ensures good breathability, so your feet never get overheated or uncomfortable in the shoe.

Rear of Nike Roshe

Phylon Midsole

Lightweight cushioning and suspension. Keeps the weight down and gives the shoe a very natural feel. There is a little suspension, but not enough to feel like you are running in a running shoe. You get a much more natural running style and feel.

Sockline

The soft and comfortable inside of the shoe. So comfortable that you don’t need to wear socks. According to Nike itself, it provides “Premium Comfort”.

Ankle Collar

The most supportive part of the shoe. Around the ankle and the opening in the shoe there is a stiffer collar that supports the foot and ankle, so you can maintain your natural running style. And of course also avoid twisting while running.

Rubber Waffle

The technology on the outsole of the shoe. The tough and durable outsole can last for many km on the road, whether you walk or run around. The outsole has some grooves that provide better grip on the surface. Not as much as a trail shoe, but sufficient for larger trails and slightly uneven paths.

Natural Motion

The technology behind natural motion gives you the most natural movement possible. Minimalism and simplicity combined in one technology. Not just a term for the shoe’s natural performance. Natural motion also influences the design of the Roshe Run. The models that have Natural Motion are therefore also characterized by a simpler and more understated design. (Available in some, but not all Nike Roshe Run)

Roshe Run from Nike men's

Hyperfuse

Hyperfuse technology is a reinforcement of the upper to provide comfort and support without adding bulk or weight to the shoe. An effective technology that provides more support around the midfoot, without being too exaggerated. (Available in some, but not all Nike Roshe Run)

Comparison with other running shoes

The Nike Roshe Run is definitely not like most running shoes. It is actually very classic Nike that it is difficult to tell the difference between their sports shoes and their sneakers. Two categories that they often mix up. Therefore, it is most fair to compare the Nike Roshe Run with Nike Air and Nike Free. These two models are promoted, branded and used in roughly the same way as the Roshe Run. Some use them for running shoes, fitness shoes and sports shoes, while others use them as sneakers. The natural design and feel will also make them a good choice as crossfit shoes, as an alternative to the more specialized shoes in the genre such as the Reebok Crossfit Nano and Inov8 F Lite 230.

History behind the Nike Roshe Run

The story behind the Nike Roshe Run is a tale of a stubborn designer’s brainchild. In 2010, Dylan Raasch had such a great idea that, despite resistance within Nike, he decided to design the shoe in his spare time. Both the shoe’s design and construction are created from a joy of play, experimentation and desire. With its innovative design, the Roshe Run is the best way to combine the quality and technologies that Nike is known for with a loose and simple design. One of the basic ideas behind it was that the Roshe Run should be cheap, so that everyone could enjoy a cool sneaker without being ruined. That’s why you can often find the Nike Roshe Run on sale and at low prices.
