Salomon Speedcross 4 is replaced by Speedcross 5
If there are any who have a versatile shoe, it is Salomon. And I intentionally write shoes and not running shoes. Because the word shoes is more inclusive of all the categories that Salomon Speedcross can be placed in.
Because it is not only one of the best-selling trail running shoes in the world, it has also been sold in thousands of pairs as fashion or street shoes. It can be used as hiking shoes, it can be used as dog walking shoes. It can do a lot. Now the upgrade to the popular version 4 has arrived. So now we are talking about the Salomon Speedcross 5. And on our site we take as a starting point the aspects of the shoe that are aimed at trail running.
Salomon Speedcross has not been known to be particularly wide in either version 3 or 4. If you have had even a slightly wide foot, you have had some problems with Speedcross. That has changed a bit in Salomon Speedcross 5. And that is mainly due to the softer and more flexible upper.
The upper in the Salomon Speedcross 5 is now a one-piece welded upper. It has become much smoother, both in fit and actually in appearance.
In addition, the outsole has been upgraded. It wasn’t because there was no grip in the previous versions of the Salomon Speedcross, but Salomon has optimized the grip in the outsole in this 5th version. You shouldn’t complain about that. The more grip, the better. As long as it doesn’t compromise other things, such as comfort. And it has just gotten better in the Salomon Speedcross 5, so for us it’s a typical win-win situation.
The Salomon Speedcross is still a running shoe without any wedge (trail running shoes rarely have this). It has a heel drop of 10mm.
What was new in Salomon Speedcross 4
Speedcross is definitely a model name you are familiar with if you run trail races. It is Salomon’s flagship within the general trail running shoe. In Denmark, Salomon Speedcross has a status as both a quite capable terrain running shoe, but many people actually also choose to use it as a work shoe or everyday shoe because it is super comfortable to walk in, and looks really good.
The Speedcross has now reached its 4th generation, and with this release, Salomon has in our eyes taken a major step towards trail, and is therefore also automatically going out of fashion a bit. Although Salomon itself is well aware that a lot of Salomon Speedcross are sold on that basis, it has long been a desire to upgrade the Speedcross to the next level on the trail running shoe scale. And there are clear signs of that in this upgrade from Speedcoss 3 to Speedcross 4.
Salomon has focused on many areas in this update, but 3 areas are important in our eyes: the outsole, the fit and the upper.
The outsole:
If we start with this, the Salomon Speedcross 4 has received a significant improvement in this regard. This is the essential point in a trail running shoe. The sole is the part of the shoe that is supposed to ensure a stable grip and a good launch from the ground. The well-known “studs” that Speedcross still consists of have received a huge upgrade. The structure and composition over the entire sole have changed, and each ContraGrib stud is now 6mm. It is really an upgrade that you will be able to feel if you have run in a Speedcross or maybe do it now. In our eyes, it is a really cool upgrade. It has already been raised to a level here, as the sole is so essential for a trail running shoe.
The upper part:
Here you should notice that the upper in the Speedcross 4 has become somewhat more flexible than it was in, for example, the Speedcross 3 and 2. But when you make an upper more free and flexible, it usually also results in less support for the foot. But we don’t think that’s the case with this upgrade. Salomon has managed to make the Speedcross much softer and more comfortable to wear, without losing support. The upper of course still contains SensiFit and the lacing system is still Quicklace.
The fit:
The padding and the actual structure inside the Salomon Speedcross 4 have been updated. It is important for a trail runner that the softness and padding inside a running shoe protects where it needs to and doesn’t get in the way. And here we have definitely seen a lift in the Speedcross 4 compared to the Salomon Speedcross 3.
Finally, we would like to mention that even though Salomon has chosen to make Salomon Speedcross much more trail running relevant, they fortunately still hold onto their cool colors and great looks.

What was new in Salomon Speedcross 3
In Salomon’s increasingly broad portfolio of running shoes, you will find, among other things, the Salomon Speedcross 3, which in many ways has been groundbreaking in trail shoes.
There have been a few versions of the shoe, the latest Salomon Speedcross 3 continues the legacy of offering trail performance to runners of all levels.
The Salomon Speedcross 3 or Speedcross 3 CS/GTX has changed significantly from the previous Salomon Speedcross 2.
The latest version is for runners with a neutral running style, where the previous model was for pronation running style.
I’m not 100% sure why they made this decision. I’ve reasoned that it must be because when trail running the foot is not exposed to the same constant pressure as you run on unpredictable surfaces, which makes the pronation wedge unnecessary.
At the same time, there has been more focus on keeping weight down while increasing comfort through more advanced technologies.
The upper is kept very thin, but still provides the same good protection and durability.
There are several exciting new features in the Salomon Speedcross 3 compared to the previous Salomon Speedcross 2.

First impressions
After hearing countless sunshine stories and Salomon Speedcross, it was finally my turn to test the running shoe. I must admit that I had my prejudices about the shoe, as it is a little different from the trail running shoes that I usually move around in. Of course, trying to be as objective as a personal review can be. It starts out really well. In addition to the design being nice, the shoe is really comfortable to wear and walk around in at home. I wonder if it is also that way out on the trail.

I start off quietly with a long run back and forth in Amager Fælled, where the trails are quite well-groomed and not too challenging. It’s a really cool experience. I feel like the shoe keeps me firmly on the ground and ensures the good grip that is so important in trail running shoes. On the mainly flat trails, it feels like a big advantage with the slightly unconventionally high drop and stronger shock absorption.

After several hundred km of trails
After testing the Salomon Speedcross on a variety of trails. Both flatter and more mountainous trails. I especially think that the Speedcross is best on flatter trails with not too many technical passages. Here the shoe’s higher drop and shock absorption really come into its own, and ensure the comfort that the Salomon Speedcross has become known for. However, I am not super impressed with its performance on more demanding and challenging trails. Here the extra height of the shoe definitely does not benefit the shoe, and I often feel a bit at risk of wiggling my foot.

It seems that the shoe’s outsole is a bit too soft to last for too many km on the road, so it is important not to run too much on asphalt if you want to be sure of having the longest durability. It is an excellent comfort shoe, which has been prioritized over performance. Which means that the shoe is best on less challenging trails and longer quiet trail rides. Which then makes it quite obvious as a trail shoe for the Danish nature.

Martin Skousen, Copenhagen area, Experienced trail runner

Kristina Schou Madsen, has run the Everest Marathon, Polar Marathon, etc.
Something that inspires me a lot when I buy shoes is what other people think about the shoes. That’s why I include opinions from other runners as well. I’ve even made a summary, which you can see below. Based on 126 reviews, the Salomon Speedcross is a running shoe in the absolute top when it comes to satisfaction.

Choosing shoe size
There is some disagreement about finding the right size for the Salomon Speedcross. The length is like a regular running shoe, which you can expect and should go for. However, some testers and other reviewers have experienced that the shoe has a slightly tighter fit than expected. Which may mean you should choose a slightly different size.

Advantages and disadvantages
Benefits
Price
Versatile use
Comfort on longer runs
Disadvantages
A little too high
Lacks grip on slippery surfaces
Slightly heavy trail shoe
Why you should buy the shoe
- A well-tested model over many years
- If you are looking for an all-round trail shoe
- Suitable for both overpronating, neutral and overpronating runners
- Good comfort for longer runs
Analysis part 1: Who is the shoe aimed at?
Running style
Salomon Speedcross is mainly aimed at the neutral runner, as it has no support specifically designed for either the pronator or the supinator. However, the Speedcross can be used by both slightly pronator and slightly supinator runners, as the shoe has effective shock absorption and it doesn’t matter much when you run on softer surfaces in forests, on trails and paths.

Fit
The mesh upper with the Quicklace system ensures a tight and comfortable fit, which is the basis for a good running experience. The precise fit that you get with Salomon’s own SensiFit lets you speculate on the trail instead of thinking about how your shoe fits. The shoe provides a tight fit especially around the heel and midfoot, while you will experience having a little more room to move your toes and control the precise movements. Here you get a complete overview of the Salomon Speedcross fit:
- Heel: Medium
- Midfoot: Medium volume
- Forefoot: Medium
- Toe height: Low
- Arch structure: Medium
- Shoe shape: Semi-curved
In fine clothes
Salomon Speedcross is really good on more relaxed trails and forest floors. I see it as an optimal trail shoe for the Danish forests, while it finds its limitations on the technical and challenging trails in the Alps. The same when the ground or path is very wet or muddy.
Price level
The recommended Salomon Speedcross price is 1000 DKK. Which is not expensive, but it is not a cheap running shoe either. On the other hand, you get a lot of running shoes for the money and a running shoe that can last for many km on trails all over the country. Fortunately for you, me and other passionate trail runners, there is a lot of competition on the market for Salomon Speedcross, which is why it can often be found on sale or at lower prices.

Weight
Master: Approximately 306 grams in size 42
Lady: Approximately 277 grams in size 39
Salomon Speedcross is not a light running shoe, it is closer to the heavier end, which is due to its, for a trail running shoe, quite strong shock absorption, which also helps to make it comfortable over longer distances.
Type of shoe
It is a trail running shoe, but not for the most hardcore single trails with very changeable surfaces. For that the shoe is a bit too high, and the grip is not quite strong enough. Speedcross is really good as a training running shoe for longer trail rides. The shock absorption is good, the drop is relatively high and the durability is long.

Durability
As mentioned above, the Salomon Speedcross is a very durable running shoe that is ideal for heavy training and long-term use. The sole is rough, but not too rough to withstand use on asphalt.
Drop height
The shoe’s drop is higher than on regular trail shoes. The Salomon Speedcross has a drop of 11 mm, which is more like a regular running shoe than the typically more minimalist inspired trail running shoes. This makes it more comfortable for longer distances and higher volume.
Analysis part 2: Structure
The outsole
The outsole has been created in the Mud & Snow Contagrip construction, which is made of a softer rubber compound, which in addition to a strong grip and grip also provides good shock absorption on harder trails. In specially selected areas, the outsole has some extra sharp studs. These are found both at the front and back of the outsole. This gives you better grip on ascents and descents.

Midsole
The midsole has effective shock absorption, which gives the shoe its comfort during longer runs on slightly harder trails. The midsole mainly has its shock absorption and cushioning in the heel, while there is a more minimalist shock absorption in the forefoot. You can read more specialized information about the midsole below.
Heel
The Salomon Cushioning System, SCS, gives the shoe an effective shock-absorbing zone in the heel region. This has been put together from molded EVA with two different stiffnesses, which provides an optimal balance between directional stability and shock absorption.
Middle
In the midfoot, the cushioning moves from the more powerful cushioning in the heel to the more minimalist forefoot. This is where the part that keeps the shoe’s torsional stability is found.

Forefoot
There is no additional cushioning in the forefoot. The cushioning here consists solely of the soft rubber outsole and the insole.
Insole
To provide extra comfort and support on the underside of the foot, the shoe comes with an Ortholite insole. It is anatomically correct shaped and provides improved shock absorption. This insole has been made from a combination of Ortholite and EVA foam, especially around the heel and arch.
Upper part
In the Salomon Speedcross you have an upper made of a breathable mesh material, which creates good ventilation to the foot, so you can keep your feet at a comfortable temperature regardless of the terrain and weather you run in. Across the toes, the upper is reinforced with a rubber construction, which protects your toes from impacts and shocks from objects on the trail. The upper is closed and fastened with Salomon’s highly praised Quicklace system, which quickly tightens the shoe tightly to the foot.
Differences in women’s and men’s models
Salomon Speedcross men’s running shoes
In my review here you will find all the information you need about the Salomon Speedcross for men. A versatile trail running shoe, with a comfortable fit, that will be a pleasure to explore the trails.

Salomon Speedcross women’s running shoes
The big difference between the Salomon Speedcross women’s running shoes and the men’s model is that the women’s shoe is a bit softer than the men’s model. This results in a less aggressive running shoe that places more emphasis on comfort.
Differences between men and women
There are some traditional differences between men’s and women’s running shoes. A women’s running shoe is typically narrower than the corresponding men’s running shoe, as women generally have narrower feet. Therefore, you should not buy the model for the opposite sex, even if you can get it in your size and in an interesting color.
Where can you find the shoe on sale?
Offers
There are many good opportunities to find Salomon Speedcross at great deals. Due to the great competition, it is often straightforward to find Speedcross at really good bargain prices, so you can save a lot of money.
Sale
Many running stores, both online and physical, often run campaigns with big sales on Salomon Speedcross and other popular running shoes. That’s why you can always find Speedcross on sale and at a cheap price. To make it easy for you, I’ve collected the cheapest prices on the internet for you in the price comparison at the top of my review.
Comparison
There are now many, and good, trail running shoes on the market. However, the Salomon Speedcross is one of the more popular models and is not only used as a running shoe, but also as a hiking shoe and the like. If you are looking for a more hardcore trail shoe, you can take a look at it coarser Salomon Fellraiser or the popular Inov8 Oroc 280. More minimalist, but with the same sole that is well suited to wider trails, you can find it lette Inov8 Trailroc 245.

Speedcross with ClimaShield
In addition to the regular Salomon Speedcross, there are also other models. Among others, Salomon Speedcross CS, which refers to the ClimaShield upper, which is a water-repellent and extra strong upper, for those who are determined to use the Speedcross in all kinds of weather and all kinds of terrain. ClimaShield is a patented technology that gives the shoe an extra insulating and warming layer, which has an extremely long durability.
GORE-TEX upper
The shoe is also available in its Salomon Speedcross GTX model, which has an incredibly technical and water-repellent upper with the quality that is agreed with GORE-TEX. An extremely hardy upper that protects your feet against all kinds of weather and any challenges you may encounter on your way. For those who place extra high demands on their trail running shoes. Of course, this model is a bit more expensive than the classic Speedcross shoe, but you also get a lot for your money. Some would say that you lose some effect when you buy a GTX Speedcross shoe, as it becomes harder to breathe – but that was certainly not my experience. If you are going out on a lot of wet runs, it is definitely worth considering the model with Goretex. And just to emphasize, Goretex and Climashield do pretty much the same thing. Goretex is just a brand you buy to use in your products – whereas Climashield is Salomon’s own membrane for their footwear. If you are not a fan of having a membrane in your running shoes (for example, if you think it seals your feet too much), there is an alternative. Salomon has made a PRO version of this shoe (Speedcross) It does not have a membrane, but instead a slightly denser mesh upper, which is also seamless.
The entire Salomon Speedcross series
As you can read above, the Salomon Speedcross is not just a single Speedcross running shoe. There are many different versions of this popular shoe from Salomon. And that is of course because a large part of Salomon’s turnover in the trail running shoe market is on the Speedcross. And of course it also makes a lot of sense to expand a successful.
In addition to the 2 models with membranes (ClimaShield and Goretex) that you can read about above, there are also:
– Salomon Speedcross S-lab
– Salomon Speedcross Pro
– Salomon Speedcross Vario
– Salomon Speedcross Vario GTX
So when we talk about a Speedcross from Salomon, it can be a lot of models. But it is most likely the classic Speedcross 4 or one of the models with membranes, because those are clearly the most widespread when we look at the sales of Speedcross in Denmark.

Summary
Whether you are into trail running, off-trail, trail running, cross-country running or anything else off the paved roads, the Salomon Speedcross is a sensible choice. You get a running shoe that performs well in all-round terrain. Speedcross has become quite popular in the Danish environment. Within Salomon The Speedcross is the best-selling model and for good reason. I would highly recommend the Salomon Speedcross to anyone who wants to try their hand at technical, easier trail running.
