Salomon XA Pro – the perfect hiking/running shoe

Are you into hiking? You should seriously consider a pair of the new Salomon XA Pro. Salomon’s XA Pro series is absolutely fantastic and very relevant for those of you who enjoy a good long hike in a pair of extremely comfortable yet performance-oriented shoes. You can use the shoes for running in the shoe, hiking in the Alps or for general use in the garden. The Salomon XA Pro is an incredibly flexible shoe with many possibilities.

Now it may be hard to use the word perfect – and I will get into that later in the description. But the shoe is so approved, and this can also be seen in the amount of shoes that go over the counter in Denmark alone. There are many many 1000 pairs of this Salomon XA Pro and XA Pro GTX that are sold.

There are several versions of the XA Pro from Salomon.

The Salomon XA Pro is made in several versions. There is the regular version which is highly water-repellent, but as such does not have a waterproof upper, and then there is the model with Goretex in the upper.

Actually it is very simple. The 2 versions are waterproof, and the last one is not. You don’t see the Climashield membrane that often in the Salomon XA Pro shoe, as it is clear that the one with Goretex is the preferred one among buyers. But Climashield does the same thing as Goretex. It is also a waterproof membrane

Goretex in Salomon XA Pro – What do I get?

Yes, it almost goes without saying. Of course, you get a hiking shoe or running shoe with a Goretex membrane. It is a membrane that ensures that your feet remain dry if the weather opens its floodgates, or you are in wet areas. All of this goes well with the fact that the shoe is not only a running shoe, but in many cases is also sold as a hiking shoe or walking shoe. There you can easily encounter some weather and some conditions where a Goretex shoe is in place.

Salomon XA Pro with ClimaShield – what is it?

Essentially the same as an XA Pro with Gore-tex membrane. The difference is that Salomon buys to use the registered trademark as Gore-tex, and thereby can use it as a membrane in their shoes. Whereas ClimaShield is their own developed membrane that can do pretty much the same as Gore-tex. So when you choose to take a Salomon XA Pro ClimaShield (CS) you also get a wind and waterproof shoe with all the advantages and disadvantages this may have. However, it is said that the ClimaShield membrane is actually better for your feet because it is not quite as closed, so your feet get more ventilation, and thereby you increase the comfort in the shoe.

Insanely durable running shoe – with a small downside

Salomon XA Pro is a very durable running shoe, and therefore lasts a long time even in very harsh environments. The shoe has a strong outsole, and does not just break. It has a sole structure that makes it best suited for rougher surfaces – but then I also promise that it can. It really takes something to wear out this running shoe. If you choose to go for a run in the forest, and Salomon XA Pro is your preferred shoe choice, then you also know that if you get near branches or hawthorn, the upper of the shoe has a small crack. The mesh used in the upper can unfortunately break when in contact with sharp or tearing elements. At least that is the experience I have had after walks in the forest in this shoe.

I have to highlight the price. You can always find a Salomon XA Pro at a really good price, and as such you get a lot for your money.

Versatile use

I don't exactly see the Salomon XA Pro as a perfect running shoe - actually, far from it. But it can still provide a good running experience, and in combination with all the other options as hiking shoes or casual shoes, it's an advantage.

Abrasion resistance

It is a very durable shoe. And in light of the previously mentioned minor flaws with the mesh in the upper, it is undeniable that the shoe does very well when it comes to durability.

Disadvantages

It wants too much

When you want it all, you often miss the mark. And from a running tester's point of view, it's a mistake to want it all. That is, both running shoes and casual shoes and walking shoes and hiking shoes. If you don't devote yourself to a segment, you don't do it 110%

Shoelace criticism

The Salomon XA Pro gets the blame for not having the most optimal laces. And I'd agree with them. You may have a hard time getting the running shoe to sit properly around your foot when you're going out into the woods and giving it some gas.

Heavy and bulky

Weight is a major factor when it comes to running if you ask me. And here the Salomon XA Pro is just not good enough. I think it's too heavy, and it's on the verge of being clunky as a running shoe for my taste.

What do testers say about the trail shoe?

The Salomon XA Pro is a trail running shoe with really good shock absorption. It has most of the latest technology from Salomon’s large development center and last but not least it has incredibly good durability. All in all, it has many of the good features a trail shoe should have.

The opinion of the trail runners is clear. One says: “The best fit I’ve ever experienced in a pair of trail shoes. Niels Lund”. The forefoot is a little wide, which is incredibly nice on longer trail rides (+20km) or longer hikes (+2 hours). Alternatively, it’s good for those of you who just have a wide forefoot. When you move far, your foot will swell. A general rule of thumb is that on a marathon your foot will be ½-1 size larger.

What technology is used?

With the 3D technology, the density of the EVA in the sole is increased 3 times more. EVA is the technology that gives you the shock absorption. In relation to how heavy the running shoe is (400 grams), I am not particularly impressed with the shock absorption. On the other hand, there is no doubt that a trail running shoe should not have nearly as much absorption as normal running shoes – this is of course due to the more varied surface.

All in all, I think the Salomon XA Pro is a really good running shoe for forest running and running over longer distances. It is not a particularly fast running shoe, and therefore I do not recommend it for competitions and fitness runs, but only as a training shoe. On that front, it does very well. I have not used the shoe for longer hikes myself, and therefore I will not comment too much on how it performs in that discipline. Differences between men’s and women’s models?

There is a difference between men and women in almost all shoes – this is also the case in the Salomon XA Pro. But if I had to try to draw a picture, I would think that this shoe is mainly sold to men. The shoe is a bit rough in appearance, and extremely durable. I have a hard time finding the feminine part in the shoe, and that’s even though Salomon is really good with their colors – also for girls. The shoe is just very rough in construction. But of course the XA Pro is also sold to women – because there are some who want to go out into the forest and run, or need a solid leisure shoe for hiking or as a dog walker shoe

Can I find the shoe on sale or at a discount?

Yes, you can very easily. The competition for the Salomon XA Pro is huge. There are many segments out there that want to sell their share of this excellent shoe. Granted, a number of these shoes are being sold that I wouldn’t dare dream of, but it is also running stores, outdoor stores, DIY stores, etc. that have gone to great lengths to sell this shoe. But that is only to your advantage – you will always be able to find a good price for the Salomon XA Pro – my assessment is that very few pairs of this shoe are sold at the recommended price. So go ahead with the offer gene and then go hunting for the shoe – it is available on sale out there.

Summary?

Salomon XA Pro and whether it has goretex or not. So the overall helicopter view of the shoe is that it is a shoe that is approved. But having said that, I would like to emphasize that when you shoot with scattershot, you do not hit the bull’s eye. That means that the shoe can do a lot of things – and I think Salomon is really happy about that. But if I see it from my running chair, and have to go out and choose a running shoe for offroad or trail, the choice would not fall on the Salomon XA Pro. On the other hand, if I wanted a crazy good everyday shoe with lots of support, good softness and a cool design, I would choose this shoe.
