What’s new in the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine 6?

As an experienced and avid trail runner, I would say that Saucony has taken a big step towards the top of the trail running shoe industry with the new Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine 6.

The Saucony Peregrine running shoe – a really good trail running shoe. Now it has come to the market in a version 6. And what does it offer?.
When we talk about the development of trail running shoes, it is not in this area that we see Saucony the most, but they still have this model Peregrine that has stuck with consumers. And it has because it is a really good trail running shoe. And let’s just reveal right away. It has not gotten worse in the Peregrine 6.

It’s a really light trial running shoe that weighs 266 grams (size 42) – and it still has the minimalist approach to trail running. We’re still working with a 4mm drop in the Peregrine 6 (21.5 to 17.5) so it’s a running shoe that gets you down to the ground, and thus an improved feel for the surface. The Peregrine 5 was a really good trail running shoe when you heard from the people who ran in it – but I can’t imagine they’d think the 6 is any worse. Because it’s got more softness, and that in itself is a bit of an achievement..
The Peregrine 6 from Saucony has their new EVERUN material in the midsole. A shock absorbing material that fits very close to the foot and cushions really well. It is added to the heel of the Peregrine 6

Design-wise, a few subtle changes have been made to improve the shoe’s performance and design.

You can still choose from a wide range of colors. All of the colors are eye-catching and provide a strong contrast to the brown mud of the trail.

Saucony peregrine 1

The outsole of this running shoe is a PWR TRAC – and here Saucony has a lot of focus on giving you the best grip uphill, but of course also downhill. If your shoes don’t work with you on these elements, it will be a really long and painful trail run. But the Peregrine does that really well.
There is also very good protection for your feet, so you reduce the risk of getting hit by stones, stumps, rocks or the like through the sole of the shoe. (EBO Rock)

My personal review of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine

When I received my brand new Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine I was like a little kid on Christmas Eve. Before I bought the shoe I had read other reviews and was really excited. I look up to Saucony a lot and have always been a fan of their award-winning trail shoes. I already have several Saucony asphalt running shoes in my collection. However, the PowerGrid Peregrine is my first trail shoe from Saucony, and probably not my last. Trail running is a hobby that takes up all my time on weekends and I am very picky about the gear I use. I believe that every run is unique and to best minimize risks, you must be well prepared and choose the right equipment. With the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine, Saucony has promised extra protection and comfort without compromising on performance and responsiveness. I am very excited to see if that is true.

First impression

Putting on the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine was an absolute no-brainer, easy and straightforward. After securing my foot, I noticed that the toe box was roomy and gave me room to move my toes. I would have liked a slightly narrower fit, however, I expect that the size I have chosen will be to my advantage on warmer days when the foot can swell. The design is very eye-catching, my friends were greatly amused by the bright colors. Despite their teasing about the colors, I feel that the shoes will secure me a lot of compliments throughout the day. The laces are standard and work excellently. The padding in the collar is comfortable and helps keep the heel in place. I started by walking around the living room a bit and was really pleasantly surprised by the good grip. I could also feel a bit of shock absorption in the heel, which could be the PowerGrid. Overall, I found the comfort to be top notch.

I managed to find a good trail with some mud to assess the shoe’s grip. And it worked perfectly and gave me a stability and security that I haven’t experienced in other running shoes. The Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is also so flexible that it didn’t hinder my lateral movements and I felt well protected throughout my run. However, I must admit that I’m not a fan of the PowerGrid technology in the heel. Since it’s a neutral and minimalist shoe, I thought I wouldn’t notice any stiffness in the shoe, as it would go hand in hand with the shoe’s cushioning. However, I could feel the stiffness of the shoe under the heel.

Saucony peregrine 4 peregrine closeup of the running shoe

I had heard that the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine was a durable shoe that would last a long time and I was definitely not disappointed. After many kilometers on the trails, the shoes are still holding up really well. They may not have hundreds of kilometers left, but I am very happy with the durability and the comfort is still as good as on my very first day.

Advantages and disadvantages of Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine

Benefits

Comfortable

Comfort is one of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine's strongest points. The mesh upper allows for breathability and flexibility like no other running shoe. You won't experience any problems on hot days due to the effective ventilation in the mesh upper. The sweat-wicking properties on the inside and in the HydraMAX collar are also a godsend. The shock absorption is supportive and protective, meaning that you as a runner will not experience any lack of comfort or pain from uneven terrain.

Excellent grip

The grip of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is excellent, which can be attributed in particular to the carbon rubber in the outsole. The aggressive cutout is not just for looks. The depth of the outsole is designed to give you a stable run on both dry and wet surfaces. Whether you're battling mud, slush or snow, you'll get a strong and secure grip.

Versatility

The versatility of the Peregrine makes it a must-have in your running shoe collection in my opinion. The shoe is a strong combination of minimalist and technical, giving you the best of both worlds.

Disadvantages

Stiff heel

Despite the support and cushioning it provides, the PowerGrid heel feels a bit intrusive when I run. It's stiff enough to protect the heel from hard landings, but you can always feel it's there rather than blending in with the cushioning. A more subtle feel would have been welcome.

Who is the shoe aimed at?

Saucony Peregrine price

The Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine has a suggested retail price of around 1000 kr, but can often be found on sale for something approaching half that, making the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine an excellent bargain for both competitive and casual trail runners. With its premium materials and efficient technologies, it is worth every penny. The shoe exceeds my expectations and has delivered what was promised and much more. The good competition on the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine means that you can find good sales and offers where the price has been reduced to the bare minimum.

Running style

The Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is a shoe that caters to the natural trail runner. It provides adequate cushioning without compromising the feeling of being close to the ground, which is essential for any trail runner. The shoe is perfect for all trail runners who want to work towards running completely neutral and flat in the future. Its heel drop is significantly lower than previous versions and encourages you to run as naturally as possible.

When it comes to pronation control, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine provides effective and balanced support for supinating and mildly pronating runners.

Terrain

With an aggressive outsole in durable carbon rubber, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is clearly made for trail running. The shoe is a perfect partner for a run on your favorite trail, no matter how technical, due to its strong grip and durable body. At the same time, it is a lightweight and versatile shoe that works well in both cold and dry environments. It performs well against snow, mud and water.

Use

Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine balances the level between comfort shoes for mass training and more minimalist shoes for competitions. The weight is right around 284 grams and the shoe can therefore be used for both competitions and training. This versatility means that many, myself included, use the shoe for most things. Especially if you only want a pair of trail shoes, it is a good choice.

Durability

The part of the shoe that is most exposed to wear and tear is the outsole. Fortunately, the outsole is made of strong carbon rubber, which is one of the most durable materials that can be used in running shoes. Even after a few kilometers, you will find that the outsole almost looks like new. Something I have not experienced in many other running shoes. The redesigned upper is also durable and will not tear up the first time you hang on a branch. The mesh upper is flexible and protects you from all the elements.

Size

Trail shoes are often a bit oversized, especially in the midsole and outsole. Even though it is a neutral shoe, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is quite large. It has a spacious fit that fits many different feet. This gives you room to control the movements of your foot down in the shoe. The size is like in normal running shoes, so you can just choose your regular size. This applies to both the men’s and women’s models. However, don’t be surprised if it takes you a few runs to get used to the size and fit.

Saucony peregrine 8 outsole thickness

Weight

It is important to consider the weight of a shoe when shopping for new trail running shoes. Trail running shoes will often be a bit heavier as they need to be able to adapt to changing terrain and demanding weather. The men’s Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine weighs in at 266 grams, while the women’s model weighs just 212 grams.

Heel height

The Saucony Power Grid Peregrine has a traditional heel height for trail running shoes, which is usually a little higher to accommodate the thick outsole. The heel height of the Peregrine is 31 mm.

Forefoot height

The height of the forefoot is important for a comfortable and powerful push-off. The forefoot of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is 24 mm, which is very normal for trail running shoes.

Saucony peregrine 9 shoe tip

Heel to toe drop

Heel-to-toe drop is the difference between the height of the heel and forefoot. The lower the number, the more natural a running style the shoe promotes. As you can see, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine has a drop of 7mm, which is a good height for anyone working their way down to a completely natural running style or barefoot running.

Shoe construction

Outsole

The outsole of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine has a very coarse tread pattern. This is something that many trail runners prefer as it provides better grip on uneven terrain. The outsole of the product has a deep tread pattern of carbon rubber. This is a harder rubber material compared to what is normally used, not to mention its durability. It has better grip in both wet and dry conditions, making it an incredibly versatile outsole. The downside of an aggressive tread pattern is that mud tends to get stuck under the shoe.

Saucony peregrine 10 flexfilm technology

Between the outsole and the midsole, Saucony has incorporated a new rock plate and shaped EBO (External Bedrock Outsole) plate. This material protects your foot from surprising rocks, spikes or the like in the ground. It ensures that you will never get wounds or bumps while running. Despite its hardness, the new rock plate does not compress the comfort of the shoe.

Midsole

The midsole of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is at least as good as its outsole. This shoe has a heel drop of 7 mm. On technical trails, this low heel drop provides an agile and natural run. As promised, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine provides sufficient and firm shock absorption that goes from heel to forefoot.

Saucony peregrine 11 rear view tail section

Upper part

Compared to the upper of its predecessors, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine really exceeds my expectations. The comfortable mesh upper effectively protects your foot from everything a fun and demanding trail can demand of you. With the water-repellent upper, you can be sure of a comfortable and dry run. There is nothing worse than getting wet and cold toes. In addition, the tongue and laces are easy to adjust and correct. At the back there is a well-padded heel collar, which guarantees less irritation and better mobility. It reaches just below the ankle, so you are assured of orderly support while running.

The technical construction of the Saucony Peregrine

HydraMAX

The HydraMAX collar is well-padded and provides support and comfort to the heel. It touches the ankle and adapts to your foot and sits very close to the skin. The material used has moisture-wicking properties that absorb and transport moisture and sweat away from the body, which is important to reduce irritation. It fits tightly around the heel to improve mobility and flexibility in the ankle and foot.

Saucony peregrine 12 front view

SSL EVA

While the PowerGrid heel takes care of the shock absorption in the heel, the midsole in the midfoot and forefoot is made of SSL EVA foam. This exclusive material that only Saucony uses is extremely durable and provides lightweight comfort and responsiveness.

Ortholite insole

Sweat is every runner’s enemy. With their new Ortholite insole and sock-like inner, the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine guarantees breathability and comfort. It transports any unwanted moisture away and is anti-microbial and anti-odor treated.

Mesh Rock Plate

The new rock plate in the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is made of nylon fiber, a durable material that is lightweight and flexible. It is placed in the forefoot to provide the necessary protection when runners have to overcome trail hazards such as sharp rocks.

Saucony Peregrine 13 portrait of the men's shoe

EBO Plate

In the middle part of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine there is an EBO plate, which is similar to the Mesh Rock Plate and also protects against sharp objects on the trail. It is located between the outsole and midsole.

PowerGrid

The PowerGrid heel plate is an improvement on Saucony’s classic ProGrid cushioning technology. The PowerGrid technology is better for pronation control and protection against the elements. The cushioning is made of Grid cushioning, Hytrel filaments and PowerForm. It is the new PowerForm that makes PowerGrid different. It is defined as an “injected molded compound” and is better than the aforementioned SSL-EVA foam in terms of responsiveness and lightness. PowerGrid is proven to be 30% more durable and 15% lighter. In addition to these aspects, PowerGrid also boosts comfort in the heel by distributing any shock evenly across the entire foot.

Saucony peregrine 14 review and test

High Traction Rubber

Trail running wouldn’t be possible without an aggressive outsole profile. The Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine has a thick outsole, which is perfect for sure-footed traction on dry and wet surfaces. No matter what terrain you attack, you’ll be able to confidently rely on the thick rubber outsole to keep you securely in place.

Sales and offers

It is absolutely not impossible to find good and low prices on Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine through various offers and sales on the running shoe. Since there is healthy competition on the sale of Saucony running shoes, there will often be good offers that allow you to find Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine cheap, especially at online running shoe stores, which are generally cheaper than physical running stores.

Men’s and Women’s Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine

Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is made for both men and women. This means that even trail runners with wide feet can run on the uneven and fun trails. The fit of a running shoe is an important aspect when choosing running shoes, which makes it necessary for each gender to have their own model. However, there is nothing against a man choosing a women’s model if that is the size that fits best. As you will see below, there are some differences between the men’s and women’s models.

Shock absorption in the heel

Heel cushioning is an important aspect for everyone, especially for runners who tend to heel strike. The forces of landing on the heel can cause injury, which cushioning can help to counteract. The men’s version of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine has a rating of 7 out of 10, while the women’s model only scores 3 out of 10.

Forefoot cushioning

Like the heel cushioning, the forefoot cushioning is also part of the overall comfort and support of the shoe. The forefoot cushioning absorbs the heavy impact of landing in the midfoot and forefoot. It also helps to provide a stronger and more dynamic push-off, making your run more agile. The Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine scores an 8 out of 10 in the men’s version and a 6 out of 10 in the women’s model.

Saucony peregrine 16 review

Stiffness

The stiffness of a shoe gives an idea of the stability and support of the shoe. For beginners, it can be important to have a stiffer shoe to help maintain balance and ensure an injury-free experience. The men’s version scores 5 out of 10, while the women’s version is slightly stiffer and scores 6 out of 10.

Stability

As with stiffness, the stability rating is an important element for both beginners and more advanced runners. Uneven terrain can cause many problems, but with a stable shoe, this can be remedied. Both the men’s and women’s versions of the Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine score 3 out of 10. Which could indicate instability, but by providing less stability you get more flexibility and comfort.

Comparable running shoes

Saucony is known for their award-winning running shoes, which more or less have all the same features that are required by the market. A similar shoe is, among others Sauconys egen Kinvara, which has many of the same technologies. However, the big difference is that Kinvara is designed for a different terrain and is specialized for running on asphalt and hard surfaces.

Saucony Peregrine 17 from above in my tests and ratings

The Saucony Kinvara is a neutral and natural running shoe for asphalt and track. It is a lightweight performance shoe that is best used by runners who want to transition to barefoot running in the future. It is a specialized shoe that has a minimalist upper and flexible cushioning that ensures the versatility and agility needed for fast runs on hard and flat surfaces. It is aimed at runners with a penchant for speed. If you train a lot of intervals and fast runs, then the Saucony Kinvara is the shoe for you.

Saucony peregrine 18 review

Summary

Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is a versatile running shoe built for trail running. The shoe rests on a thin line between minimalist running shoes and more comfortable running shoes, which means you get the best of both worlds. The upper, midsole and outsole have all been built with a focus on detail and all of Saucony’s best and newest technologies have been incorporated into the shoe. Saucony PowerGrid Peregrine is not just a beautiful and comfortable shoe, it is also a performance shoe that gives your foot the best conditions to get out and run on the world’s most beautiful trails.
