Find your correct running speed in our calculator

Enter your distance and how long it took you to run – and the calculator will help you find your speed in km/h and min/km. Below you can see an example of a calculation from our calculator. There is just one small thing you need to pay attention to – the decimals

kmt or min/kmt calculation

You calculate the 100% correct min/sec time as follows:

The decimals are divided by 100 and multiplied by 60.
Example:
3.97 per kilometer says the result, then you do this:

97/100 x 60 = 58.2 seconds.
So my time will be 3 minutes and 58.2 seconds

How to measure your running speed

There are basically two ways to measure running speeds. One is km/h, i.e. kilometers per hour. Newcomers to running training typically use this terminology, which works well. Here you also have something to relate to in terms of car speeds, bicycle speeds and the like.

The other unit of measurement is min/km, i.e. minutes per kilometer. How long on average has it taken you to cover one kilometer. Measuring running speed by min/km is very popular. Why? It is easy to calculate, multiply or divide by, the opposite of km/h.

Calculate speed and optimize your training

Does it really make any difference if I know my running speed?

Yes!

It’s quite simple. Personally, I almost always use my speed to assess whether I am running/have run too fast. It is not always best to just run as fast as possible. Therefore, knowing what pace to run at can help me in many ways.

Sometimes I calculate my times before I go running, other times I analyze my times after I get home from a run. It depends on the purpose.

Min/km or km/h – personal experiences

There are advantages and disadvantages to both measurement methods. Calculate speed from km/h and you have something to relate to. Calculate speed from min/km and all other runners will know what you are talking about.

As you become more established in the running community, you will quickly see how min/km is most commonly used. It is also my preferred unit of measurement.

Calculate Pace (min/km) for your run

When you want to calculate your running speed, this is often referred to as your “pace,” which is expressed in minutes per kilometer (min/km). This is a very popular unit of measurement among runners, as it gives a good idea of how fast you run relative to a standard distance of 1 kilometer. For example, if you run 5 km in 25 minutes, this means that your pace is 5 minutes per kilometer.

How is pace calculated?

To calculate your pace, you first need to know the total time you have run and the distance you have covered. Then use the following formula:

  • Pace = Time / Distance (in km)

If you run 10 km in 50 minutes, your pace will be:

  • Pace = 50 minutes / 10 km = 5 minutes per kilometer (5 min/km).

Calculate your pace with our calculator

Our calculator allows you to calculate your running speed in both km/h and min/km, so you can easily find out how you are doing in relation to your training. Enter your running distance and time, and get your pace calculated immediately.

Being able to calculate your pace is a great way to track your progress and ensure you are maintaining a pace that suits your training goals. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced runner, this will help you optimize your training and achieve your goals.

Calculate average speed

Understand your average speed during a run or other workout with this calculator. It can help you calculate how fast you have moved over a given distance and time. This is especially useful for analyzing training performance or planning future rides.

How is average speed calculated?

Average speed is calculated by taking the distance traveled and dividing it by the time it took to cover the distance. The formula looks like this:

Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ Time (hours)

If the time is given in minutes or seconds, it must first be converted to hours. Example:

  • You have run 10 kilometers in 50 minutes.
  • First, convert 50 minutes to hours: 50 ÷ 60 = 0.833 hours.
  • Then use the formula: 10 ÷ 0.833 = 12 km/h.

Use the calculator above

Enter your data to calculate the average speed:

  • Distance:
    (Eksempel: 10 km)
  • Time:
(Enter in the format hh:mm:ss or mm:ss)
