Calculate VO2 max
It can be useful to know your VO2 max (your maximum oxygen uptake) to compare your form with other athletes or see how good your form is in relation to other sports.
VO2 max is a universal way to calculate a person’s fitness.

What is VO2 max?
It’s actually quite straightforward to explain VO2 max. Here’s how the calculation works:
- V = Volume
- O2 = Oxygen
- Max = Maximum (it was difficult)
This is the maximum volume of oxygen you can take in, also called maximal oxygen uptake. The muscles use oxygen that is found in oxygen. VO2 is measured in milliliters of oxygen you can take in in 1 minute. It is a common unit. VO2 max is then the maximum amount of oxygen you can draw into your lungs per minute.
How do I improve my VO2 max?
Training. Endurance sports. Hill training and interval training are among the most effective methods for improving your maximum oxygen uptake.
Parameters that affect VO2 Max
- Altitude. As you move up in altitude, your maximum oxygen uptake will decrease. This is because the concentration of oxygen changes. The oxygen becomes thinner.
- Age. Your maximum oxygen uptake decreases with age, so there’s no better time than NOW to get in the best shape of your life.
- Gender. Men have a higher value of VO2 max than women.
- Training. There is a lot of experimentation in training VO2 max among athletes, and it is among the most important factors in how you perform in endurance sports.
How do I calculate my fitness level based on VO2 max?
I recommend you go to my calculator, which converts VO2 max values to fitness numbers. You can find all calculators here. Generally speaking, VO2 max is calculated based on two different considerations:
- The absolute VO2 max, which is measured in ml oxygen/min
- The relative VO2 max, which is measured in ml oxygen/kg/min
The fitness number is based on your relative VO2 max, meaning your body weight also has an impact on your overall value.
Athletes with the world’s highest VO2 max
One of my favorite athletes, Killian Journet, has been measured to have the world’s highest VO2 max and a fitness score of 92. Try calculating your own VO2 max and fitness score and you’ll be surprised at how huge it is to have the numbers Killian Journet has. For comparison, Lance Armstrong had a fitness score of 84, Miguel Indurain had one of 88 and Greg Lemond came in just shy of 92. No human, however, can beat a horse, which can have fitness scores in the neighborhood of 200 and above.
