Conversion of finishing time at different distances
A tool I have often used myself to find an expected finish time for a longer or shorter distance is the tool below.
You enter your current finishing time at a given distance, and the tool uses a formula to calculate your expected best time at a range of distances..
Also take a look at one of the others free running tools, or take a closer look at the different running calculators.
For example, if you know your half marathon time and want to see your expected time for the marathon distance, you can use this tool. It is an estimated finish time that is reasonable for use in split times.
How do I use the end time conversion?
Personally, I am very keen on having the best conditions to push myself as much as possible when I train for running – especially if it is for a competitive race or a fitness race, where time really matters for my placement and how many points I get. With a tool like the one above, I can use the formula to get an idea of how I can perform in the 10 km distance based on my 5 km time. It can be difficult to see how much you “go down” when you get to longer distances. This is a parameter that the tool has taken into account.
Examples and typical calculation rules for running training
In addition, there are some fixed rules of calculation, which do not always apply. Typically, it is said that you can run a marathon in 2x the half marathon time + 10 minutes. And that you can run a half marathon in 2x the 10km time + 5 minutes. However, this does not always hold true.
The calculator above, which calculates your finishing time at different distances, is also not entirely accurate. If you are very endurance-minded, you will find that it calculates conservative times on your long distances. Conversely, if you are a fast runner, you will get very fast times estimated on long distances. Take the calculator with a grain of salt. However, it is built based on complex knowledge within running, speeds and expected pace.
Example of calculated finishing time for several running distances
Below you will find a calculated table based on my own numbers. Of course, this is always the case with calculators like these. They do not take into account all external elements, such as daily mood, weather, yes, there are a whole lot of elements I could mention. But I can see from the numbers that they fit almost frighteningly well. So use it as a guideline, and then make your own experiences.
