What is Flyknit?

Flyknit is a collective term for all running shoes, casual shoes and sports shoes that use the advanced Flyknit technology in the upper. After being asked to create a new running shoe with a better and more comfortable fit, Nike embarked on a four-year mission to develop a new technology. A technology that is now known as Nike Flyknit. They set high standards for their own work and the finished result. The big problem was to create an upper that was light and adapted to the foot, without losing durability and structure.

Nike Flyknit uppers

What Nike has done is that they have knitted the upper and precisely placed the necessary support, flexibility and breathability. All of this in a unique way in one layer. Before they produced the first running shoes, they had repeatedly refined and improved the technique so that it worked optimally. The result was a featherweight, with a fit that adapts to the owner’s feet and an almost seamless upper.

Nike Flyknit technology

One of the most important parameters during the development of Nike Flyknit was to keep the weight as low as possible. By knitting the upper in polyester yarn, which is polyester yarn, there are a lot of microscopic holes in the shoe, which in addition to keeping the weight down in the featherweight class, also helps to give the shoes their tight and comfortable fit, as well as a breathability that makes the shoes stay fresh for a long time. The upper itself is more closed and dense, where the foot needs extra support. Areas on the foot where the need for support is less, the material is more open and lighter.

The knitted material is also one of the secrets behind the extremely comfortable and tight fit that you get in a pair of Nike Flyknit shoes. The polyester yarn has been knitted in a very special structure. The structure adapts to the structure and shape of the foot, to provide the same great fit that you certainly know from your running socks. Nike Flyknit are running shoes that you don’t notice you’re wearing.

To give the shoe the necessary and tailored support around the foot, they have combined Flyknit with their very popular dynamic Flywire technology, which surrounds the foot from the sole to the laces. Dynamic Firewire has some strong strings that run up the side of the foot and can be set and adjusted with the lacing system. Dynamic Firewire provides exactly the support that your foot needs and it provides the support where it is needed most.

Eco-friendly running shoes

Besides being extremely high-tech and helping to push the boundaries of performance-oriented shoes, Nike Flyknit is also very environmentally friendly shoes. During the production of the Flyknit uppers, the waste material weighs no more than the paper the shoe was originally drawn on. They have created a shoe technology that does not pollute nature, and which will hopefully encourage even more people to get outside and enjoy nature in a pair of light and comfortable Nike Flyknit shoes. Nike Flyknit reduces waste from upper production by 88%

Advantages and disadvantages

Here I will try to explain the advantages and disadvantages of Nike Flyknit. I have been impressed by the shoes and their performance, even after many km on the roads and on smaller trails. As always, there are some small things that you would like to have done a little differently. Maybe it’s just my foot, my high demands or attention to detail. But in any case, below are my thoughts and advantages and disadvantages of Nike Flyknit. First a clear list and then a more detailed review of the different elements.

Benefits

  • Low weight
  • Comfortable fit
  • Surprisingly good support
  • Beautiful design

Disadvantages

  • Durability
  • On the expensive end

Benefits of Nike Flyknit

Low weight

The first thing you will notice, or rather not notice, is the weight of the Nike Flyknit. It is pressed all the way to the bottom and is so light that you can hardly feel that you are wearing it. I love the feeling of running lightly on your toes and with a pair of running shoes that fit tightly and have a low weight. The low weight means that you do not have to use as much effort to run. A difference of 100 grams makes a big difference when you take about 1000 steps/km. And Nike Flyknit are some of the lightest shoes on the market.

Comfortable fit

Nike has really managed to create something special with Nike Flyknit. The shoes hug the foot nicely and tightly. It fits snugly without being tight. It weighs nothing, but is comfortable to run in and I often felt like I wasn’t wearing any running shoes. How amazing is that? I was quite skeptical when Nike came out with the shoe and sold it on the premise that it would fit as comfortably as a sock. But I’m convinced. I’m a believer.

Good support around the foot

Although the material is thin and almost transparent in places, Nike Flyknit provides, for me, surprisingly good support around the entire foot. I really think the shoe’s dynamic flywire works optimally. The minimalist running shoe fits very tightly around the foot and feels secure and stable in the most important areas. I couldn’t ask for more support.

Minor note about Dynamic Flywire. It did annoy me a bit that I had to tighten the laces, and through this Dynamic Flywire, from scratch every time, to get the fit that I was used to. However, that’s a minor thing.

I should point out, however, that over the years I have been used to running in more minimalist running shoes, which has reduced my need for support. If you have been used to running in running shoes with a high degree of support, it will definitely take some getting used to switching to a Nike Flyknit.

Beautiful design

Without a second thought, I can say that I think Mike Flyknit’s design is one of the absolute best on the market. The minimalist upper, which has been combined with the strong and fluorescent colors, is a total hit in my book. At the same time, it’s almost as if you can see through the shoe. And even though I don’t find my feet particularly beautiful, it looks really nice with a shoe that wraps around the foot. Even when you run on asphalt, you can dream of a world where you sprint around barefoot on a grass field.

Disadvantages of Flyknit

Durability

No matter how happy I am with the minimalist upper that hugs the foot, I must admit that I have my doubts about the durability of Nike Flyknit. The material is really thin. I haven’t experienced it yet, but I would recommend that you take extra care if you don’t run on asphalt. Especially be careful of bumps, gravel that jumps up or the running shoes hitting some sharp objects on the road. At the same time, I would probably be careful not to tighten the shoes too forcefully, as the strings that connect Dynamic Flywire to the laces seem a bit fragile. All in all, I have my doubts about the durability of Nike Flyknit, but if you are aware of it and take care of the shoes, they should probably last for a lot of km.

High price

I think the prices are a bit on the high end. It definitely has something to do with the technology being brand new and there aren’t that many models yet, so Nike wants to keep the price a bit high so they can maintain a good and exclusive reputation for a while longer. But the prices will definitely drop within a couple of years, the question is whether you can and should wait for Nike Flyknit to become cheaper.

Final comments about Nike Flyknit

That was my overall review and assessment of Nike Flyknit. I hope you were able to use it, and the guide has helped you further. Whether a Nike Flyknit is going to be your next running shoe or not, I hope the review has been useful. Nike Flyknit is a revolutionary technology that will definitely take running shoes, and even football boots, further in development. Whether it is exactly as revolutionary and fantastic as Nike’s always wild and entertaining marketing promises, I am not entirely sure. But I have been very satisfied with my Nike Flyknit running shoes after testing them for a longer period.
