Nike Zoom technology as shock absorption material

Nike Air Max is a whole family of running shoes, with the same light, thin and effective cushioning technology. Nike Zoom is a further development of Nike Air more specifically for sports. The lower cushioning lets you get closer to the surface and gives you better control and a more responsive run. All Nike Zoom running shoes in recent years have become more focused on “Natural Running” further forward on the foot to help you run even faster.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benefits

Online price

The prices of Nike running shoes and thus also for all Nike Zoom running shoes, which are among Nike's most popular models, have been pushed to the bottom. It is therefore possible to get quality running shoes for almost nothing. I have made price comparisons under the individual models, so that you can always find the cheapest price for Nike running shoes online. This can save you a lot of time and money.

Both for training and competition

Most Nike Zoom running shoes are versatile running shoes that can be used for training and competition. Heavier runners may find the Nike Zoom cushioning to be just hard and stiff enough for many long training runs. Lighter runners, however, will enjoy the extremely responsive cushioning in the shoe's midsole.

Focus on speed

Nike makes no secret of the fact that their ongoing updates to their Nike Zoom running shoes are to give you more speed in your feet and ensure that you can beat your PR and run even faster. They do this by trying to make the cushioning more responsive and reduce the weight of their running shoes by creating the upper in thinner materials. At the same time, they work hard to ensure that this does not affect the performance of the shoes. Which, however, has not happened to date. I have only been satisfied with Nike's improvements in their Zoom running shoes.

Disadvantages

Lack of rigidity

Almost all Nike Zoom running shoes are on the lower end of their class in terms of weight, which makes them super functional and promotes speed in the run. However, the thin uppers and fairly minimalist cushioning in several of the Zoom models can make the shoes appear a little too flexible, which is not necessarily an advantage when you want to give it full throttle on the road or at a competition.

Too little development

It has always been important for me to keep up with the latest developments and I always follow new product launches closely. Although I am really happy with the updates that have happened in the Nike Zoom running shoes lately, I have to admit that from time to time I miss the big revolution or the completely new thing from Nike. Especially when compared to the developments that have been made by their big competitor Adidas, which have been much more powerful. Just read about the new Adidas Boost.

One of the newer models in the Nike Zoom running shoe range. The extremely lightweight running shoe, weighing in at under 200g, is an obvious choice for those of you who want to run faster, both over shorter and longer distances. A running shoe with a high level of comfort, due to a very breathable and close-fitting upper, which with its Dynamic Flywire provides a secure fit around the foot. The shoe is created so that you can beat your PR and that is exactly why the Nike Zoom Air cushioning fits perfectly intoNike Air Zoom Streak. The weight is kept to a minimum without compromising on the good shock-absorbing properties.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus

A classic in running shoes and has currently been developed and improved in more than 30 models. The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus is a workhorse that has been designed to last for many kilometers on the road. In the latest models, Nike has made the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus more focused on natural running, which is a big part of Nike’s running philosophy. This has meant, among other things, that the Pegasus has a lower drop and that its Zoom Air cushioning has been made thinner. This provides a more responsive, active and faster run.

Olympic champion Mo Farah always runs in the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus.

I have previously with great pleasure tested Nike Air Zoom Pegasus and was particularly impressed with the comfort and durability of the shoe. Nice to have a long distance running shoe that lets you run naturally forward on your foot.

Nike Zoom Elite

This is a versatile running shoe that is in the mid-range and can therefore be used for both training and competition. Zoom cushioning inNike Zoom Elite is not quite strong enough for heavier runners and as a training shoe the shoe should therefore primarily be used by lighter runners. The Zoom Air cushioning runs the entire length of the shoe. This combined with the fact that the running shoe midsole comes in two hardnesses gives you secure control over the foot and a quickly responsive take-off. The upper is an open mesh construction with incorporated flywire, which provides a secure and tight fit without irritating the foot. In the latest version, the weight has once again been lowered slightly. Less weight = less resistance.

Nike Zoom Structure

One of Nike’s first specified running shoes, which also makes it one of the world’s best-selling running shoes. I have tested and reviewed Nike Zoom Structure, and have been very satisfied with the shoe. It provides more support than the other Nike running shoes with Zoom cushioning. The shoe is primarily aimed at runners with overpronation, hence the high support and help with controlling the foot. This also means that the weight is slightly higher and is around 300 grams. In return, you also get a running shoe with lots of support, really good cushioning and good comfort. The advanced midsole gives you a fluid transition from landing to take-off.

Nike Zoom Vomero

This running shoe is primarily aimed at the neutral or pronating runner. As you can read in my test of the Nike Zoom Vomero, The latest version has an improved fit and lower weight. It is one of Nike’s top running shoes, but since the competition for Nike running shoes is extremely high, it can still be obtained at very low prices, down to around 50% of the recommended retail price, which means you get a lot of running shoes for your money.

The Nike Zoom Vomero has Zoom inserts in the heel and forefoot, and the entire sole has Cushlon, which is a stronger shock absorption. Its open mesh upper provides good and effective ventilation. The fit has been improved with Nike’s very popular Flywire technology, which makes the shoe tight to the entire foot when you lace up your laces.

What is Nike Zoom?

Nike Zoom cushioning is part of the Nike Air family and, like its siblings, is characterized by long durability and low weight. Because Nike Zoom cushioning is so impressively thin, it brings the foot closer to the ground, which increases stability especially during quick changes of direction. After landing, the dense fibers inside the compressed air unit will quickly spring back to its original shape. This provides a super responsive feel to the surface you are moving on.

Nike Zoom cushioning ensures that weight is always kept to a minimum without sacrificing the performance of the shoe. This is extremely important, as a lighter shoe will mean you need to use less energy per movement, which will ensure you have more energy and thus a faster time. Almost no matter what sport you do, you will be able to benefit from Nike Zoom cushioning, and this does not only apply to running. The low and versatile cushioning can also adapt to your sport.

Nike Zoom technology

To protect your bones, ligaments and muscles, it is important to have effective and correct cushioning to minimize the forces and shocks that will undoubtedly hit your body every time you land on your foot during a run. Immediately after the pressure is released, the Nike Zoom cushioning will return to its original shape and provide optimal protection for the next running step. This can protect you from fatigue and stress on muscles, joints and bones. Throughout the life of a Nike Zoom running shoe, the cushioning will function constantly and optimally.

I have tested Nike Zoom several times and every time I have to surrender to the effective cushioning. Even in the most technologically advanced running shoes, Nike Zoom is a firmer cushioning than is known from other running shoes, which I really like. However, I am always a little disappointed that the Nike Zoom cushioning always feels a little the same way and the technology is a little stagnant. This is in stark contrast to, for example, Adidas, whose shoes are in rapid development. Nike probably lives by the motto “Don’t change a winning team”, which of course I can’t put my finger on.

The cushioning technology itself is kept pretty much the same, but Nike has changed a lot of the upper to make their shoes lighter and faster. A winner is always right, so Nike is trying to modify their shoes so that you can get further forward on the foot and get more speed in the running shoes. I think they do this really well, and their new and lighter uppers sit really comfortably and tight around the foot, even though they are lighter than ever before.

Nike Zoom has been on the market for many years and still has many fans around the world. I can understand that, I am also a fan of Nike Zoom and the different running shoes. With more than five different running shoes in the Zoom category, you should be aware of which running shoe you buy, as there can be a big difference between the running shoes. Both in price (although most Nike Zoom running shoes can be bought cheaply on sale online), technology and use.

Compared to other running shoes

Below I have compared the running shoes from the Nike Zoom series with other running shoes. There will be both a comparison with other running shoes from Nike and with running shoes from other similar brands.

Comparing Nike Zoom with other Nike running shoes

Nike Zoom is part of the Nike Air family and a further development of the classic cushioning from Nike, which was developed in 1979. Since then, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge, and the more minimalist and stiffer Zoom running shoes differ quite significantly from the Nike Air shoes, which are now more of a fashion shoe than a running shoe. Nike Zoom shoes have a firmer cushioning and are starting to take on a more minimalist running style. The running shoes are therefore somewhere in the middle between the more cushioning Nike Lunar Eclipse and Nike Lunarglide and then they very minimalist Nike Free and the further development of Nike Free Flyknit.

Compared to other brands

If you compare Nike Zoom with running shoes from other brands, you can look at the following running shoes. This applies to both men’s and women’s models. You should mainly look for running shoes with light support for either pronation or supination. With the affordable New Balance 860you get a lot of running shoes for the money. The minimalist Saucony Triumph training running shoes is far superior to Nike running shoes in terms of style and design. For more popular models, you can take a look at Asics Gel Kayano, which is a durable mass training shoe for pronating runners. Also thetechnical Brooks Adrenaline is aimed at pronator runners and harder surfaces. The many different Nike Zoom running shoes each have their own specific characteristics. If you want to read more precise comparisons, I recommend going into each individual shoe.

Summary on Nike Zoom review

Nike Zoom is a classic series of running shoes with a sporty focus. Comfort is paramount to give you the best conditions to run as fast as possible. In recent years, Nike Zoom running shoes have been influenced more by Nike’s focus on natural running and the design of the shoe has become more minimalist and obvious for those of you who run further forward on the foot. In addition to the fact that Nike Zoom running shoes are really comfortable and good to run in, they are built in a quality that will last for many km on the road and last but not least, the competition on Nike running shoes is extremely high, which means that you can save a lot of money and find cheap Nike running shoes by buying online.

Nike is known for their athletic performance and high quality. The same definitely applies to their Nike Zoom running shoes, which I have been very satisfied with in my test and review.
