Testing the 3 best route planners for running routes

running routeIf I don’t run with a GPS watch (because sometimes it’s nice without one), I like to measure my route afterwards. It’s always fun to see how far you’ve run. There are many different route trackers. In this article I review some of the many – and give my assessment.

The ideal route meter

What should the ideal route meter be able to do?

That’s the question I asked myself. For me, the most important thing is:

  • Precise indication of KM figures
  • Surveying routes in terrain and forest
  • Possibility to choose different card types
  • Hurtig loadtid
  • Lir: draw your own route from point A to B that follows a road (shows example later)

If you find route surveyors interesting, you should stop by. our large guide section, which contains a variety of crisp running tools.

iForms route planner

iForm has been known for many years for their route planner. It is for Mr. and Mrs. Denmark. Still, it has some cool details. The design is nice and intuitive. Just right for going to.

  1. Too bad there are ads. If you scroll further down the page there are tons of ads. Practice.
  2. You have standard information about your route. Smart feature that you can enter your zip code, but all these route planners have that by now. Being able to choose map types is definitely a must – iForm’s tool does that nicely.
  3. You have the opportunity to get some Mr. and Mrs. Denmark information. It includes standard information about your combustion. Not worth anything in my opinion.
  4. Lir! I love it. Enter your time and get standard numbers about your workout. Also see an altitude profile. I have tested it and compared it to GPS measurement. It is very accurate!

iform route planner

I actually think (for once) that iForm has done something sensible. The graphics are nice – it’s easy and intuitive. And there’s good information.

Exercise-online route planner

Motion-online.dk has been around for many years. Of course, they also have a tool. Let’s look at its features. Let me put it bluntly. it’s not as good as iForms.

  1. Advertisements. Just like iForm. Unfortunately :-(
  2. Get the same information as iForm’s route meter. However, the design is not nearly as crisp as it is on iform.
  3. Card options – a must.

exercise online route planner

All in all, a nice standard tool for measuring running routes. You can draw your route and see results.

Ride with GPS calculates, plots and GPS

My favorite! A powerful tool for runners and cyclists. Drop your Garmin GPS running watch and measure the route afterwards. Then you will save 3000 kroner and can be more relaxed when you are out training.

This tool can do it all. Let me walk you through it with the following image:

  1. Map types. Standard. Like the other two Danish running calculators
  2. Optimization. It’s so smart. I want to especially highlight “follow route”. Look at the route I made. With just 3-4 points I get a route that follows roads. It’s really smart. I can add comments, share and much more.
  3. Be surprised with an altimeter. Even get elevation gain. Super relevant for cyclists, but certainly also runners.
  4. Directions. See how to get to your destination.

GPS ride advanced route tracker for running and cycling

This tool is my clear favorite. A route planner that can do it all. Draw your route easily and intuitively. Calculate key figures about the trip afterwards. It’s smart.

The only downside is that you have to create a user account to use the route meter. But it’s worth every penny!

A concluding comment

Ditch the running watch and enjoy nature instead. After your run, you can measure your route if you want. With one of these tools, you can get so much data you never dared to dream of.

Do you have any experience using route finders for running training?
